Just returned from the Carnival Glory – Proceed with caution

Ok so I just returned from the Carnival Glory sailing to Halifax and Saint John on Saturday. I wish that I could tell you all that the trip was amazing but I can't. Being a half glass full type of person, I tell you the good, bad and UGLY.

The Good

The food in general was very good. We enjoyed our meals in the Platinum dining room and our wait service was as expected. The deli served real turkey sandwiches and a decent Ruben, the burritos at the burrito bar was well prepared and the 24 hour pizza was consistent available and good.

The bartenders were well versed in a variety of cocktails and they were good. My favorites, the Pomegranate Martini and the Bloody Mary's.

The entertainment was very good. We enjoyed the showcases in the theatre and one of the comedians - Mark Klein - was very funny. One of our most enjoyable activities was Karaoke with Megan. She had just the right amount of sarcastic wit that makes listening to karaoke enjoyable. The casino was very lively and very profitable for two people in our party (sadly not me).

The cabins were clean and I thought spacious. We had a balcony room and though the weather in Canada was cool, I did get to take advantage of having cocktails with friends on it.

We booked two excursions. The first was a private tour with Roy Flowers. Roy is a very interesting and informed individual. His tour was $50 USD per hour and he took us through Saint John (including AM & PM Reversing Falls), Saint Martin, Fundy Bay and a delicious lunch of chowder and lobster roll and several stops for shopping along the way. We had hoped to go to the Fundy trail but unfortunately we had a late departure off the ship and just ran out of time. I would definately recommend him.

The second was the Titanic and Peggy Cove tour. Unfortunately the weather was very wet that day but we still truly enjoyed the tour and I still was able to take some great shots of the cove.

The Bad

Too many areas where smoking was allowed, particularly in areas where entertainment took place. The Cinn-a-bar is a very entertaining piano bar and I would have really enjoyed singing along but the smoke was so thick that it was difficult to breath in the small room. We had to leave after a short time.

I felt that the buffet could have been set up more affectively Food lines moved way too slowly, coffee stations were placed too far away from milk and sugar and staff in the buffet were not always helpful.

I felt communication on the ship was very limited. You couldn't hear PA announcements (except debarkement instructions) in your cabin or in some areas of the ship and activities were not announced on the PA to remind people. On other cruises I and other members of my party have been on, there has been a larger variety of things to do. We hardly saw the cruise director, although my daughter and her friend who are 21 said he MC'd the events they went to. Still I never saw him on the ship - only on the giant TV screen on pre-recorded features.

The UGLY

One person in my party had the misfortune of slipping on the Lido deck in an area located near dining tables. There were no caution signs or barriers placed to indicate that the area was wet and when my friend went to medical services, she treated with inadequate medical care and extremely rudely by a member of the medical staff. The person who was on call told her it was her fault because she was wearing flip flops (I didn't realize the pool was a no flip flop zone) and was told "my you are big" when this person attempted to take an x-ray. She was also told that if she refused to go the hospital in Halifax she would be put off the ship and if she did go, and if she didn't return by 5:30 pm, the ship would sail without her and she'd have to find her own way home. She also was forced to sign a document stating that she was responsible for the cost of medical incurred before they would call an ambulance to take her for evaluation which is another story. The Halifax hospital took one x-ray - hardly enough for a potential fracture.

We fully intend to complain to Carnival and my friend is contemplating a possible law suit if she is presented with a bill. We subsequently found out that two additional people slipped on this deck. Certainly this is something that Carnival has to address.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate this cruise experience a 7.

I can imagine the responses you're going to get on this one. As far as the announcements, I've never heard them announce activities in the cabins. I've always had to open my cabin door if I want to hear them.

As far as the water on the Lido deck, well, it is the Lido deck and there is water up there. Kids can come from the pool and go to get ice cream and get the floor wet (along with other scenarios). It isn't always possible for someone to carry "wet floor" signs behind everyone that can track or spill water. The Fun Times state that any medical services will be charged to your sail&sign card. Unless you're unconscious, if you go into any hospital or urgent care facility you need to sign paperwork to be seen.

Don't expect a lot of sympathy saying you're contemplating a lawsuit.

I don't think your friend has a leg to stand on so to speak. But do what you think you have too.

I am sorry to hear you had an "Ugly" part of the trip. I am alo sorry that you did not know that the tiles will get wet/damp from condensation built up. (there are signs all over the place-- not like the big yellow cones because then they would be all over the place.

ANd flip flops are the worse thing to wear in the buffet/pool areas. but that does not give the person the right to be mean about it.

(I am trying to figure out what you mean by the milk/sugar is too far from the coffee station. I always found it either right next to it--or aroun the corner from it. )

Do a little research about flip flops and liability suits before anyone puts effort into going for extra compensation. I bet injuries while wearing them are not covered. You're better off barefoot.

Thanks for the cruise report, love hearing about Canada. And hope your friend gets better and can remember the good parts of her cruise.

What if you have medical through Carnival? Is anything charged to you at all if something happens and you need to be seen? I am confused. I thought that is what we paid a good bit of money to Carnival for.. :(

If by "on deck" you mean outside, you can usually tell when an outside deck is wet. And considering a pool is nearby, you should be extra cautious for wet spots. As other people have said (and I'm sure many more will say), I don't see why you're contemplating a lawsuit. Accidents happen, especially on a cruise ship. Don't forget about all the "wet deck" and "slippery when wet" signs posted on the lido deck.

I do agree about the coffee and creamer station setup though. The first time I went to get coffee I thought they forgot to put the creamer out! Then I just waited for someone else to get coffee and I followed them to the creamer/sugar station. :p

Sorry to hear about the mishap, but your post is outright funny and so typical!!!!! First, should the ship, put a slippery when wet sign out all over the outside? Come on. At what age do you need to be to realize that wet ground is slippery? That's too funny. Next, what court of law will you use? The doctor is not a US doctor, you were in international waters when the mishap occured, and you were treated in Canada? Plus yo plan to sue, based on something that the normal adult would know, the floor could be slippery!!!!

I can answer that from personal experience.

I broke my foot one hour into the cruise (on the Glory, interestingly enough) by tripping over the riser between the balcony and the room.

I was given x-rays, a temporary cast (i was told that it would last till the end of the cruise, then i should see an orthopedic doctor when i got back), a wheelchair, and our table in the dining room was changed to one close to the front.

Carnival gave me a letter stating that any subsequent medical bills on land due to this incident should be submitted to them for payment.

They paid them

I wouldn't dream of suing them for my accident.... though of course there are always people who said it was the cruise line's fault for not having a caution strip on the riser... sheesh... i should sue Carnival because *I'm* a klutz?!

Here I am, all dolled up in a wheelchair...still had a ball!! (and got hose over the cast, too!! :) )

Sorry about the "ugly" of your trip

I went on your itinerary last year. It was foggy the whole time. The lido deck near buffet was VERY SLIPPERY. I mean you had to walk so slow and careful NOT to fall.

My friend did fall.... she said noone came to help her...Medical services were pretty useless.....poor girl got home and found out her elbow was broken.

BTW...she did sue.....all she got was a bill from her lawyer...and she had to go to Florida on her dime.

So sorry your friend experienced a fall while onboard!

I don't think I would go through the effort/cost of a lawsuit, I am sure there really isn't any recourse. There are signs posted all over Lido deck and it usually also states in the Fun Times to be careful.

We sailed on the Glory a few years back and thought the layout was really great. But, we all have different preferences.

I hope you find a better cruise experience next time! :)

Wow... that is soooo different from my experience. (the post above yours)

And why did she wait till she got home to find out her elbow was broken?

They have x-rays down in the medical area, and are very willing to check to make sure nothing is broken.... And the ship's doctor (a woman) was wonderful!

I didn't even WANT to get x-rays... I thought it would be ok after I put ice on it or something.

She insisted.... and it's a good thing I listened to her!

and I forgot to mention. There were no handicap accessible cabins available, so they brought me a shower chair and some plastic to wrap the cast, so I could sit in the shower with my leg sticking out and not get it wet.

They could not have been more accomodating.

We just got back from the Miracle and found the floor in the buffet very slippery. I've sailed four different cruise lines and haven't' experienced similiear situations. I would suggest they carpet the floor and get rid of the tiles that cause the slippery situations. I

Hmmm. There are slippery floor signs posted along the lido deck. They can't use the big plastic cones, they would blow away. It's also the open deck of the ship and has a pool. One would expect due to weather and pools that the ground will be wet. It's unfornate your friend fell yes. It's not the cruise lines responsibility though. As for the medical treatment. It sounds like you received adequate medical care. You may not have enjoyed the personality of the staff and that is a personal preference I guess. But the fact that you went so far as to complain about the hospital not doing enough says something to me. What more would you expect them to do? Should they perform a full body CT scan for an injured leg? Maybe a couple 12 lead ECG's? How about an MRI or two? They took an x-ray and based off the findings they determined your most appropriate treatment. You obviously are oblivious to how the world works. Again it's unfortunate you had this experience but I find it VERY unlikely that you would receive any different treatment from any other cruise line. If you are concerned about medical bills then get insurance. It's well explained that medical cost are YOUR responsibility not the cruise lines. I think all a lawsuit will do is cost you time and money and you will end up more upset than you currently are. Good luck in your future cruise adventures.

There is a reason there is no carpet around the buffet. Can one say spills, constant spills. The carpet would be ruined in a month. Do you have carpet in your kitchen? I'm guessing not. Tiles can be swept and mopped getting rid of the grease and grime.

I understand what they are saying about the Lido deck it should be assumed that it's slippery with all the pools and stuff but are the liable, yes, of course they will say it's your fault. I was just curious did they charge you for the doctor's visit onboard? I have heard others have been but for more serious things.

Once again, I will STRESS that flip flops and ships DON'T match. Leave them for the beach. Cruise ships are moving vessels.

BTW, is you friend big?

I am curious to why not being able to hear the PA announcements and not seeing the CD are on the "bad" list?

I have always found the announcements to be highly intrusive and for the most part, unnecessary.

Unless you are fortunate to have an exceptional CD, and they are few and far between, they are for the most part a waste of oxygen.

Technically, cruise ships don't even have to have medical staff for passengers. Your cruise contract states you accept the risk of travel and the limited services that may be available. She will get a bill and be responsible for it. Wet floor on the pool deck should be expected, don't see how Carnival is to blame?

Sorry about your accident, but accidents do happen.

What I don't get...why are people so quick to sue!?!? We are "sue happy" and think we should get money for everything. :(

It certainly isn't Carnival's fault that the pool area is WET. It's a pool...with water...water is wet...people get wet in the pool and when they get out the deck gets wet.

We need to walk carefully and wear shoes that aren't slippery on wet decks.

Common sense + our responsibility = great cruise vacation!
