Packing material for alcohol bottles purchased in the Caribbean

Recommended Posts

I discovered Sheridan's a couple of years ago on a Carnival cruise. We purchased two bottles on Grand Cayman.

On the last night of the cruise, when the bottles were delivered to our cabin, we learned that Carnival has an ingenious method to secure the bottles for travel. We brought them to the gift shop/liquor store. Each bottle was inserted into a plastic bag that has individual tubes. A hose was plugged into a small port in the plastic bag. It blew up and totally enclosed the bottle. It looked like an inflatable pool raft wrapped around each bottle. The cost was only 99 cents per wrap. The bottles made their way home safe and sound.

We plan on purchasing more Sheridan's on our next cruise. Does Royal Caribbean have a service like this or should I plan on bringing lots of bubble wrap?

im not aware that RCCL does that-however i fly frequently with bottles of wine as i am collector of boutique wines from small winerys. I purchased " bottle armor" from Magellans-they are two in a package and are stury plastic with a double lining of bubble wrap that seals with a heavy zip loc type zipper.-

They did that when we were on the Navigator last December. I saw them doing it for liquor that people bought on the ship, not sure if they'll do it for liquor bought elsewhere, but it's worth asking.

I always used to wrap the bottles in clothing and put them in the center of the suitcase. They made it home just fine.

But the blow up thing is nicer, since if it DOES happen to break you probably will contain the spillage somewhat.

They had this on the Grandeur in April - didn't notice on the Oasis since I bought the 'fancy stuff' all nicely packed in padded boxes already ;)

I do however always pack a roll of bubblewrap in my suitcase and a couple grocery bags - last flight I was on someone lifted their suitcase off of the belt and it was POURING liquid... must have had at least 3 or 4 bottles in there... enter stage right - Canada Customs agent lol

We brought 2 bottles of Sheridan's home from Mariner last April. They gave us 2 boxes to put them in. We didn't see the special wrappers being offered in their shop. We wrapped the boxed Sheridan's in clothes & made sure they were in the middle of our suitcases (used a separate suitcase for each). When we got to the Southwest ticket counter, I noticed the man checking in next to us was having a large 'FRAGILE' sticker put on his check-in bag. I asked the attendant checking us in if we could have a few of those stickers on our bags. He never hesitated. Our Sheridan's made it home safely:D

We plan on doing this again in December. This time I will ask for the little blow-up protectors. Thanks for the heads up on this tip!!

I read somewhere about using kids "floaties" (the inflatable life-preserver thingies that are used around kids' arms when swimming) to put around bottles as padding. I would guess that you'd also want to put them into ziplocks for the waterproofing value too.

While cruising on Radiance last year I bought an expensive bottle of tequila in Mexico. When the bottle was delivered to me on the last night of the cruise, I was able to bring it to the store on the ship, pay 99 cents, and they did the fancy padded packaging for me. It worked out great-- and I highly recommend it.
