Carribean Princess problems with motion, ship always swaying? Help!

In reading ship reviews last night when I couldn't get on the message boards, I read a bunch of reviews on the Carribean Princess having problems with motion, always feeling like the ship was swaying. One person said they heard it was due to being one story higher it affects the stability. It has been like this since last April. the ship was built wrong? Has anybody else experienced this problem? Also reviews saying princess has gone downhill the past few months. Anybody else feel this way? Let me know does this ship really have that much motion, the stabilizers don't work?

We were in Riviera 722 on the second cruise last year and it really wasn't a big deal. Could feel a very slight motion and a click as the stabilizer caught it. Had some 15' waves between Grand Cayman and Cozumel and motion was more noticable, especially in the theatre and casino forward. Didn't see any water slopping in the swimming pools, though. Compared to what some folks here have reported during the hurricane season this ship was pretty stable.

DH and I were on the Caribbean Princess three weeks ago today - January 22-29. Throughout the week, we frequently remarked to one another about the smoothness of the voyage. The last two nights of the cruise, though, the seas were rough, and we definitely felt movement of the vessel, but not any more than on any other "grand" class Princess ship.

Having been on four Princess cruises, DH and I feel that the quality of service is consistent and meets or exceeds our expectations.

Thanks for easing my mind, when reading some of those reviews i was freaking out. I know if the weather is going to be ruff their might be a problem but I didn't want to deal with it all the time. First time cruiser and not sure how the ship is going to effect me. Everyone keeps telling me not to worry with stabilizers etc. and then i read these reviews. So it's not like that all the time I hope.

Hi Linda, We were on the Caribbean Princess in July (first timers also) Our cabin was aft, Emerald 727. We did notice a tiny bit of vibration at times, also one night a gentle rocking. Nothing terrible. As we were a bit nervous before we ever got on board, we took a ginger capsule every morning, and a dramamine at bedtime. No problems at all. Have fun!!

Linda,

My wife is prone to some motion sickness and has never had a problem on 5 cruises. She does carry the little pressure-point wristbands (look like mini-sweatbands) in case she ever feels the motion becoming an issue, but has never had to use them, even in 12' seas.

Only thing that has ever turned her green on a cruise was the ferry from Cozumel to Playa Del Carmen.

It is possible that the reveiws you read were of those sailing during rough sea conditions. Remember, ALL ships will have movement if the sea conditions are not good.

We sailed the CP and never had any problem at all with feeling any constant movement.

It never ceases to amaze me that people complain in reviews that they could 'feel the ship move'. I mean, they are on a ship, of coarse they are going to feel some movement. If they want stable, then a land based vacation is the best suggestion I can give to them. Most passengers go on a ship because they love the feel of the ocean and the movement of the ship.

Forget it, this is not an issue

thanks everyone for your help. I feel alot better now. Was going to do the ginger anyways and maybe bring along some bonine as I heard that works best. Just want to be able to have a drink also so don't want to take too much bonine. I know I can drink with the ginger. I guess some people just have nothing good to say about the CP which is too bad as most of you that have sailed on her have said it was great. I am hoping for that.

I felt a little queasy was when I looked in the miror to brush my teeth lol I too was on the Cozemul ferry to Playa de Carmen. My wife thought I was going to hurl. After that every sail has been a cake walk. You know that some folks will find fault with everything.

I agree - the Cozumel-Playa Del Carmen ferry is like "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride". I thought I would lose my lunch on that one, for sure.

I've never sailed in rough seas before, but have felt both the Grand sway a bit and one of the smaller Carnival ships, too, in fairly calm water. It didn't seem to be a big problem, and no one around me seemed to notice.

My wife and I sailed the CP on 1/29 and it was pretty rough between Florida and Puerto Rico both ways. Of course, ther were at least 4 ft swells and up to about 10 ft swells durring that stretch. The captain blamed this on the Atlantic. A few times, they had to cover the pools for safety's sake and they closed one of the open prominade decks at least once. I have a friend who sailed the Carnival Triumph on a very similar itinerary and he said it was rough near FL, too. We heard more than one person comment that they had often told friends, who were reluctant to cruise because of possible sea sickness, that "with these big ships you have nothing to worry about - they hardly feel like they are moving". Our cruise proved them wrong.

I know there are a lot of know it alls on board so, I took it with a grain of salt but I heard someone claim that the CP was not built for rough seas (like you might experience on a trans-atlantic trip) and therefore less equipped to handle them.

Of course, when the ship was tossing the most, we were going 21 knots, so maybe the stabilizers were not in use?

By the way, we experienced the same thing as the others on the Cozumel ferry. The combination of the choppy water and the crowded, covered deck made more than a few queezy! The ride back to the island was on the open deck on a sunny afternoon and it was just fine!

Hi StoneHarborLady,

Nice to see you again.Remember, I waved at you as you left Port Everglades on July 3-from the beach? LOL.

We were on the Caribbean Princess-finally- Hurricane Jeanne week-Sept. 18-27. Up to the point where we inadvertantly got too close to the Atlantic on the way to Nassau, there were several remarks from my group about how smooth the ride had been. Those with patches didn't need them-until we hit that rough water. It was an interesting sound that we heard in the Casino, not knowing it was from the swells. However, as prone as I was to motion sickness as a child, the movement didn't bother me-especially out on deck. After several hours, the Capt turned us around and we went back into calm waters. On the Friday we tried to really "truck" and get back to Port Everglades by midnight, but Jeanne had sped up and all us ships turned around again, and again, and again to stay down by Cuba.

By the way, we are now booked on her for the week of Oct. 8, and some of my friends from the Sept. cruise will be cruising on her the same week as before-only Sept.17-both dates will have us going to the Eastern Caribbean which we missed last year.

I believe that many ships have experienced "movement" recently per reviews upon their return-different lines-same places. Lynne

It's definitely not built wrong! We sailed this past Oct and as a matter of fact I had to stop taking the bonine because it was making me sick and I did absolutely fine after that. There wasn't motion at all on our trip and I actually wished there were because I love the feeling of being rocked to sleep. I definitely think it all depends on when you sail. In April we felt the Disney Wonder bigtime, though with the bonine I was fine. I guess that stuff only works if there is motion and if there isn't it's actually a hindrance to take it.

so when is the best time to sail? Aug. Sept. seems to be hurricanes. you never know. This year Jan. & Feb. the sea seems to be rough. We are going in April. I am hoping things calm down by the spring. We were in Bahamas last Feb. at the Atlantis and we couldnt' go into the ocean due to the waves, and bad under toe, it finally cleared after a few days but maybe it is just the time of year or maybe you just never know with the weather. As long as it is not just the Carribean Princess with the motion problem. Will try the ginger and bonine and see what happens. Any other recent sailing experiences, let me know.

Just some FYI, the Caribbean Princess is a newer ship, she wont be a year old until April. I find it hard to believe she was not built to handle high seas, that would be a big determent to a cruiseline and not very profitable, sort of like not putting a/c in the cabins. :) My guess is she has all the finest tuning you can get these days, after all they want her to at least last for 10 years!:)
