wannatan Posted August 20, 2010 #1 Share Posted August 20, 2010 Just a bit of info anyone who can get a new esta before sept 8th as after then there will be a charge of $14. If you already have a current esta the new one you apply for will overtake the old and last for two years so no payments till sept 12. Just how much money is the US government going to make from this?

DonnaK Posted August 20, 2010 #4 Share Posted August 20, 2010 From Wikipedia: The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is a United States government requirement (mandated by the Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007) for participating travelers from Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries arriving by air or sea to complete online the I-94W form (formerly paper-based and filled on arrival by participating VWP citizens) in advance of travel to the United States. The multi-language site maintained by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Passengers (including babies) not having an ESTA may be denied to check in, although it might be possible (but not guaranteed) to get one while at the airport. minikiss Posted August 20, 2010 #7 Share Posted August 20, 2010 This is what the US Embassy London website says about it. 09 August 2010 Since the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) was implemented, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has had discretion to charge a fee to cover the administering of the program. The fee is to be implemented on September 8, 2010. A fee of $4.00 will cover the costs incurred by the DHS, Customs and Border Protection of providing and administering the ESTA system and is in addition to the mandatory $10.00 travel promotion fee established by the Travel Promotion Act of 2009. The total fee for a new or renewed ESTA will be $14.00. Not a lot of money, just a bit of a blow when you consider we have never had to pay for it before.. minikiss Posted August 20, 2010 #8 Share Posted August 20, 2010 also off the US Embassy website Currently, 36 countries participate in the Visa Waiver Program, as shown below: Andorra Hungary New Zealand Australia Iceland Norway Austria Ireland Portugal Belgium Italy San Marino Brunei Japan Singapore Czech Republic Latvia Slovakia Denmark Liechtenstein Slovenia Estonia Lithuania South Korea Finland Luxembourg Spain France Malta Sweden Germany Monaco Switzerland Greece the Netherlands United Kingdom What about Canadian, Mexican or Bermudan citizens and VWP? Canada, Mexico and Bermuda are not participants in the Visa Waiver Program. The Immigration and Nationality Act includes other provisions for visa-free travel for nationals of Canada and Bermuda under certain circumstances. See Citizens of Canada, Mexico and Bermuda. Since they are not part of the Visa Waiver Program, VWP requirements for machine-readable or biometric passports do not apply to nationals of Canada, Mexico or Bermuda. Also, it should be noted that some nationals of Canada and Bermuda travelling to the United States require non immigrant visas. http://www.travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1260.html
