All the ships at sea

Just found a very cool website: http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/ -- it displays current location for every sort of vessel (passenger, cargo, tankers, yachts, tugs, etc). Zooming in on the Vancouver area, I could see the Rotterdam headed toward the Juan de Fuca Strait.

The site isn't populating correctly for the Alaska area for some reason, but it's a lot of fun seeing how many ships are out there and where they're clustered. This link focuses on the Gulf of Mexico: http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/default.aspx?mmsi=352923000&centerx=-88.4772&centery=28.68016&zoom=10&type_color=3

That's a good site for ships that are close to ports, but it doesn't follow them very far out to sea ... about 50 miles, I think. Since it updates frequently, you can sorta "watch" ships leaving a port like Ft Lauderdale.

CLICK HERE for another site that shows cruise ship positions. This also has a big problem: it's based on voluntary reporting by the ships, so it can be days, weeks, or months out of date. (For example, the Statendam last reported 4 days ago.) The other deficiency is that the ships only report their positions once per day.
