Summit delayed embarkation on Sunday

I've been checking the Celebrity site - and for those on the sailing to Bermuda tomorrow who haven't yet seen it - here is the notice of a delay in embarkation and sailing:

Celebrity Summit Late Arrival - (September 04, 2010 - 3:00 p.m E.S.T) - While sailing back to New Jersey, Celebrity Summit encountered strong winds and high seas, which significantly slowed its sailing speed. Because of this, Celebrity Summit's arrival to Cape Liberty has been delayed, and will now arrive in Bayonne, New Jersey on Sunday, September 5 later than originally scheduled.

We ask that guests who are scheduled to sail on Celebrity Summit on Sunday, September 5 not arrive at the port before 4:00 p.m., but no later than 6:00 p.m. Boarding will begin at 5:00 p.m.

The delayed departure is not expected to have an impact on the scheduled itinerary

cruiserking had posted this earlier on his "live from Summit 8/29" thread:

"According to the Captains' noon report the Summit will be late in arriving to Cape Liberty. We will not pull into the pier until 12 noon on Sunday. We are still over 400 miles from New Jersey and the captain will not pick up his cruise speed until he learns that the storm is abating. We currently drifting along at a meager 11 knots not much quicker than the passengers who are weaving back and forth along the halls."

The ship normally is scheduled to pull into port at 8am so Summit will be at least 4 hrs behind schedule. Summit will have no problem making up that lost time since it had 2.5 days originally to get to Bermuda which is about a day more than it really needs.

There is a Houlihan's in the shopping area near the turn to the cruise port. It is very nice and should be a good place to eat lunch and if you sit outside you can watch the traffic going in and out of the port. Have a great trip.:)

We sailed on the Constellation Baltic Cruise from Amsterdam July 3rd. Heard on CC and via E-mail from onboard friends doing a b2b that our cruise would be delayed in sailing due to noro virus (we sailed after 8pm instead of 4:30pm!).

Fellow CCer called Celebrity and told sailing would be on-time - she told them notice on CC - they asked her to hold on and they checked CC - came back to her saying she was correct, they hadn't been told anything.

PS - CC is way ahead!!!!

Have a great cruise - hope the waters are smooth after the huricane!

Just posting an update... It is now almost 11 p.m. and we are finally sailing in what feels like fairly normal, albeit bumpy seas. It was extremely rough last night and through most of the day and into the evening.

We are still being told to expect a four hour delay in arrival tomorrow with various bars, shops and the casino open in the a.m. We don't have to leave our rooms until about 10:30 and according to Rob Wheatley, the Cruise Director, might make up some time tonight and arrive slightly before noon, but the emphasis in on "might" and the official time is still noon.

Quite a ride home!

At 10:45 a.m. coasting along Brooklyn not yet at the Verrazano so I doubt we'll be getting off much before noon since once we dock the ship has to be cleared. Hard to tell exactly how much longer it will take. They ran out of bacon at breakfast but otherwise people are just relaxing all over the ship and it is a gorgeous day.

Thanks for posting-- hope people can still make flights if they need to...

Also hope they get some more bacon & that they have waffles-- we'll be arriving at the port later today!! No sense rushing out when we know the ship is coming in late!

Have really apprepciated being kept informed by our CC friends on board--Celebrity does not give out the same kind of information!~!!

Just to finish up, I hope those embarking today have a wonderful cruise despite the delayed embarkation and departure. We had a rather long and not wonderful finish to our's. We pulled into the port at just about noon. Then after half an hour were told that we would soon be disembarking... just waiting for clearance from the authorities. An hour later we were told there was a problem with the luggage and the longshoremen. Then another wait and finally they began to let people off the ship about 2:30 or so (not sure exactly when, but long after disembarkation should have begun!)

We were Pink 18 because we wanted to leave at 9 a.m. for a 9:30 car service pick up. As it turned out, we didn't get into the car until about 3:45 and got home just after 5. I felt really sorry for the people with missed flights this afternoon who were scrambling to reschedule last night for new ones only to miss those, too.

I have begun a review of our cruise and will try to finish it up in the next few days while it's still fresh in my mind. Mostly right now, I wish they had provided us with some lunch and beverages, but there are other ways they could have made our wait more comfortable. There was a guy standing near the shuttle bus with a tray of sandwiches, but he didn't offer us anything and there was no indication they were meant for us (as opposed to meant for the folks in the terminal who were waiting to board, which is who I thought the tray was meant to feed)... confusing for sure. A few people took some sandwiches as they passed by and got on the bus, which was even more confusing. At the end of the review I'm definitely going to suggest that Celebrity give some thought to how to handle the people stranded on the ship in such a circumstance. Although it may be rare, the fact that it occurred today means it could happen again, and they should be prepared for that eventuality.
