any diners, drive-ins and dives fans?

was doing some research for our upcoming Jan cruise today and came up w/ 5 places that have been on the show and are located in the greater Ft Lauderdale area.

Did some checking of reviews on trip advisor and yelp and it's hard to know what to think. I think some folks just like to disagree with Guy Fieri.. so anyway w/ that disclaimer... here's what I found -

Grampas Bakery & Restaurant Dania Beach http://www.grampasbakery.com

Whales Rib 2031 NE 2nd St , Deerfield Beach

Sonny's Famous Steak Hoagies 1857 NW 66th Ave Hollywood

Havana Hideout Lake Worth http://www.havanahideout.com

Flakowitz Deli Boynton Beach flakowitzofboynton.com

Another dive type place that isn't bad is Lester's Diner and we've also had good meals at a little hole in the wall called Lil Reds 1705 West St Rd 84.

Any of you lauderdale locals have any thoughts on the places Guy has been? Worth a trip?

The most famous place in that category in Fort Lauderdale has got to be Tom Jenkins's Barbeque!

I've been to the Flakowitz in Boca Raton and it's very good but not worth a special trip. Lester's is fine if you need a place to go late at night or early in the morning, but otherwise I wouldn't make a special trip there. I haven't tried the other suggested places.

My favorite hole-in-the-wall is Brother Tucker's in Pompano Beach.http://www.pubcrawler.com/Template/ReviewWC.cfm/flat/BrewerID=105454

Primanti Brothers has been on the show, but at the the original Pittsburgh location.

We always try to make a trip there the day before a cruise. Have to get ready for the culinary delights on the cruise'

But go to the one across from the beach, not the one out on Oakland Park blvd.

For all the places on michmike's list, you'll need a car if you're staying near the cruise port or the airport. IMO not worth the drive. Guy seems to be competing with TFN's sister Travel Channel Man vs Food in terms of going to the places with the largest gut buster servings.

I like the Whale's Rib in Deerfield. It's very divy and they used to have a claw machine with lobsters in it. Good chowder, fried clams. That sort of thing.

I'm a fan of Lester's for breakfast, but get good coffee before you go. It's a typical diner. Nothing worth going out of your way for, but if it's close by, then hey, why not?

Same with Flakowitz. If you're going to Boynton Beach, why not just go to Rascal House in Boca?

Not sure if Guy has been to these places, but as a local, here are a few of my faves:

- The Floridian diner (Ft. Lauderdale - Las Olas Blvd)

- Le Tub (Hollywood Beach - Intracoastal & A1A - chargrilled burgers!)

- The Big Pink diner (S. Beach - 2nd St & Collins Ave)

- Mario the Baker (N. Miami - the original location on W Dixie Hwy - THE best garlic rolls!)

- Flashback Diner (Hallandale Beach - US1 across from Gulfstream Park)

Probably the biggest dive of them all: Jimbo's on Virginia Key

Thanks for the input from you local folks. I'm more inclined to trust you than Guy, esp after having read some of the reviews of the places he has been. We only have a day and a half this trip so likely won't get to more than a couple places, but will report back here on our experience after the cruise.

Any thoughts about a beach front place called Aruba?

If you're staying around 17th St, take the #40 bus, it goes right by the beach location.

Sorry to be the bearer of sad news Ruthless...I sat shiva over the N. Miami location. I'm a 10 minute walk to Pomperdale's though.

I was racking my brain to see if there were any other Jewish Deli's in the area and I came up with gornisht. Pomperdales, I've heard of them, but I've never been there. This time out we're in Miami, not Ft. Lauderdale, so I'll leave it to my cousin to recommend a place for breakfast.

Oddly enough, here in Atlanta we have a great, authentic Jewish Deli right in our neighborhood. They do a salami and eggs that would bring tears to your eyes.

Sage Bagel is still in Hallendale and it has table service, and there is a NY deli on 17th St in Southport Shopping Center (where Publix used to be). But Pomperdale's is where we go, of course. Sadly, their family patriarch recently died, but the family is still running it. They still go by the "honor system" of ordering/paying.
