michmike Posted September 20, 2010 #1 Share Posted September 20, 2010 was doing some research for our upcoming Jan cruise today and came up w/ 5 places that have been on the show and are located in the greater Ft Lauderdale area. Did some checking of reviews on trip advisor and yelp and it's hard to know what to think. I think some folks just like to disagree with Guy Fieri.. so anyway w/ that disclaimer... here's what I found - Grampas Bakery & Restaurant Dania Beach http://www.grampasbakery.com Whales Rib 2031 NE 2nd St , Deerfield Beach Sonny's Famous Steak Hoagies 1857 NW 66th Ave Hollywood Havana Hideout Lake Worth http://www.havanahideout.com Flakowitz Deli Boynton Beach flakowitzofboynton.com Another dive type place that isn't bad is Lester's Diner and we've also had good meals at a little hole in the wall called Lil Reds 1705 West St Rd 84. Any of you lauderdale locals have any thoughts on the places Guy has been? Worth a trip?
RalphiesRedRyder Posted September 20, 2010 #2 Share Posted September 20, 2010 I'd like to know if any of those are worth a trip, too. Thanks.
royalcruz Posted September 21, 2010 #3 Share Posted September 21, 2010 The most famous place in that category in Fort Lauderdale has got to be Tom Jenkins's Barbeque! http://www.tomjenkinsbbq.com/ I've been to the Flakowitz in Boca Raton and it's very good but not worth a special trip. Lester's is fine if you need a place to go late at night or early in the morning, but otherwise I wouldn't make a special trip there. I haven't tried the other suggested places. My favorite hole-in-the-wall is Brother Tucker's in Pompano Beach.http://www.pubcrawler.com/Template/ReviewWC.cfm/flat/BrewerID=105454
Salty The Sea Dog Posted September 21, 2010 #4 Share Posted September 21, 2010 I've been to Whale's Rib, but I didn't think it was anything special and I'm a fan of the show. Boynton Beach is quite a ways from Ft Lauderdale.
KreinKrunker Posted September 21, 2010 #5 Share Posted September 21, 2010 Primanti Brothers has been on the show, but at the the original Pittsburgh location. http://www.primantibros.com/ We always try to make a trip there the day before a cruise. Have to get ready for the culinary delights on the cruise' http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=26.136966,+-80.103287&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=901+N+Fort+Lauderdale+Beach+Blvd,+Fort+Lauderdale,+Broward,+Florida+33304&t=m&z=

For all the places on michmike's list, you'll need a car if you're staying near the cruise port or the airport. IMO not worth the drive. Guy seems to be competing with TFN's sister Travel Channel Man vs Food in terms of going to the places with the largest gut buster servings. RuthlessBunny Posted September 21, 2010 #7 Share Posted September 21, 2010 I like the Whale's Rib in Deerfield. It's very divy and they used to have a claw machine with lobsters in it. Good chowder, fried clams. That sort of thing. I'm a fan of Lester's for breakfast, but get good coffee before you go. It's a typical diner. Nothing worth going out of your way for, but if it's close by, then hey, why not? Same with Flakowitz. If you're going to Boynton Beach, why not just go to Rascal House in Boca? brunello22 Posted September 21, 2010 #8 Share Posted September 21, 2010 Not sure if Guy has been to these places, but as a local, here are a few of my faves: - The Floridian diner (Ft. Lauderdale - Las Olas Blvd) - Le Tub (Hollywood Beach - Intracoastal & A1A - chargrilled burgers!) - The Big Pink diner (S. Beach - 2nd St & Collins Ave) - Mario the Baker (N. Miami - the original location on W Dixie Hwy - THE best garlic rolls!) - Flashback Diner (Hallandale Beach - US1 across from Gulfstream Park) Probably the biggest dive of them all: Jimbo's on Virginia Key http://www.jimbosplace.com/
RuthlessBunny Posted September 21, 2010 #9 Share Posted September 21, 2010 There's also the Peter Pan diner in Oakland Park.

RuthlessBunny Posted September 21, 2010 #12 Share Posted September 21, 2010 because it closed 5 yrs ago. Shut the front door! I knew the one on Miami Beach closed, I had no idea about Boca. Wow.
melana Posted September 21, 2010 #13 Share Posted September 21, 2010 yes he has been to the Floridian. I was going to stop there last year but the people I was with did not want to for some reason.
michmike Posted September 21, 2010 Author #14 Share Posted September 21, 2010 Thanks for the input from you local folks. I'm more inclined to trust you than Guy, esp after having read some of the reviews of the places he has been. We only have a day and a half this trip so likely won't get to more than a couple places, but will report back here on our experience after the cruise. Any thoughts about a beach front place called Aruba?
RuthlessBunny Posted September 21, 2010 #15 Share Posted September 21, 2010 Aruba is one of my favorite places! Good food, excellent cocktails and it's right on the beach. I like the jerk chicken sandwich or the grouper. Also the lobster salad. The big entrees aren't as good as the lunchy sandwich stuff.

For all the places on michmike's list, you'll need a car if you're staying near the cruise port or the airport. If you're staying around 17th St, take the #40 bus, it goes right by the beach location. http://www.broward.org/BCT/MapsAndSchedules/Pages/MapsAndSchedules.aspx
royalcruz Posted September 22, 2010 #17 Share Posted September 22, 2010 Shut the front door! I knew the one on Miami Beach closed, I had no idea about Boca. Wow. Sorry to be the bearer of sad news Ruthless...I sat shiva over the N. Miami location. I'm a 10 minute walk to Pomperdale's though.
RuthlessBunny Posted September 22, 2010 #18 Share Posted September 22, 2010 Sorry to be the bearer of sad news Ruthless...I sat shiva over the N. Miami location. I'm a 10 minute walk to Pomperdale's though. I was racking my brain to see if there were any other Jewish Deli's in the area and I came up with gornisht. Pomperdales, I've heard of them, but I've never been there. This time out we're in Miami, not Ft. Lauderdale, so I'll leave it to my cousin to recommend a place for breakfast. Oddly enough, here in Atlanta we have a great, authentic Jewish Deli right in our neighborhood. They do a salami and eggs that would bring tears to your eyes. Sage Bagel is still in Hallendale and it has table service, and there is a NY deli on 17th St in Southport Shopping Center (where Publix used to be). But Pomperdale's is where we go, of course. Sadly, their family patriarch recently died, but the family is still running it. They still go by the "honor system" of ordering/paying.
