Villefranche..transportation to Nice & Eze Village

Hi, could someone please tell which I should go to first.. Nice or Eze Village from Villefranche. Also, we will be docked their on a Sunday and any help/advice regarding transportation would really be appreciated.

Hi Michele,

 

I would try to do Eze Village first and Nice second, simply because there's infrequent bus service to/from Eze Village, but much more frequent service between Nice/VF.

 

The options by bus going to Eze Village:

 

(1) #100 towards Monte Carlo, get off at Eze bord de Mer (SNCF stop) and transfer to #83 up to Eze Village

(2) #100 to Nice and then #82 or #112 to Eze Village

 

To return simply reverse the route.

 

Ideally, it would be nice to get to Eze Village via one option and return via the other to see more of the countryside, rather than just backtracking along the same route, i.e. #100 towards Monte Carlo, transfer to #83 up to Eze Village, return on #112 or #82 to Nice, then #100 to VF.

 

I would look at schedules for both options and see what works best for you...it requires some effort now to go through the schedules, but will save you long waits at the bus stops once there.

 

Here's the schedule for #100, #112, #82, #83. To change the date, time or reverse direction use the box, "Journey Date and Time" just above the schedules.

 

Just to complicate things further, you can take the train to Nice or in the other direction to Eze bord de Mer to connect with buses up to Eze Village. Service is infrequent on Sundays, but here's a link to schedules in case you want to look at that option. The first pages are schedules in the direction towards Monte Carlo, the latter pages are towards Nice. Note re column headings: "Sauf dim" = Except Sunday, "Sauf sam et dim" = Except Sat/Sun, "Tous les Jours" = every day.

 

Finally, here's a map of Villefranche which shows the bus stop for #100 (it's called 'octroi' stop) - lower left corner of the map where the blue boxes are on Ave du Mal Foch, and the train (SNCF) - top middle of the map. The port is Port de la Sante.

Susan so am i reading the schedule right..if i go with number 1. does the bus come at 10 and every 20 min therafter , than the 83 doesnt go the eze village until 12:25? thx Michele

You're welcome ... and agree it's confusing, but it's workable.

 

Re your comment on#83: 12:25 is the time that #83 arrives in Eze Village, but it leaves Eze Gare SNCF (where you'll transfer from #100 to #83) at 12:09.

 

Re #100 ... since it comes every 20 minutes, no need to use the schedule.

 

What we did: 10 a.m. arrival in VF, got on the tender a.s.a.p. and were able to walk up to the bus stop for #100 to catch the 10:40 a.m. bus to Eze bord de Mer - 10 minute wait there & connected to #83 at 11:04. Arrived in Eze at 11:20

 

I printed out bus schedules and wrote out 2 or 3 options for itineraries because I wasn't sure how quickly we could get to the bus stop or train station once off the ship. If you can't get the #100 @ 10:40 to connect with #83 at 11:04, you might be better off heading towards Nice on #100 to connect there to #82 which leaves Nice at 11:45 going to Eze Village.

A-B: Bus #100: VF <> Eze bord de Mer (Gare SNCF stop)

B-C: Bus #83: Eze bord de Mer <> Eze Village

C-D - Bus #82 & 112: Eze Village <> Nice

D-E - Bus #100 Nice <> VF

 

A few additional comments:

 

- Maps of each of the bus stops are on the bus web site (see the column marked maps ... it's the little white box beside the stop name.)

 

- You can pay the driver (1 euro each - have coins or small bills). With stops to spend time in Eze Village and Nice, you will have 3 journeys, so 3 euros total pp for your bus transportation for the day .. very cheap!

 

- Be sure to validate the ticket in the machine on the bus, and you can use this ticket to transfer to the next bus (it has to be used for transfers within 74 minutes of first use).

 

It's a great way to spend the day and you have enough time for what you are planning to do. I would plan to be back in VF 2 hours ahead of your sailing. If you have time to spare VF is a nice town to wander in, and with it being a tender port, you'll want to give yourself some extra time for that.

You ask where to go first on a Sunday. Our recommendation is that if you can get ashore relatively early (by 10 am) you should get the local bus #100 directly to Nice and go to the end of the line which is the Gare Routiere Bus Station. From there, quickly walk towards the water (you will need a decent street map which you can get from a book or d/l ) and make your way through the old town to the Cours Selaya whee you will find the very interesting Flower Market. You can late go back to the bus station and catch the #82 bus directly to Eze Village (you will want to check the schedule for this bus when you arrive since it only runs about once every 45 min (or longer). The reason we say go directly to Nice is that the Flower Market (which also has interesting food) closes before 1 pm. Keep in mind that most of Nice and Monte Carlo are closed on Sundays.

On the bus, is exact fare required? Is paper euros accepted by the driver?

Exact change isn't required. I've read that if using bills, smaller denominations are preferred.

As has been said, you do not need exact change but do not try to break a 100 Euro bill on a bus :) As to the Eze Village stop, do not be overly shy on buses. Ask the driver for help (he/she will understand "Eze Village" even if they do not speak English) and do not hesitate to ask fellow passengers for help (most foks are very friendly).
