Any golfers?

We are on the Legend in December. My husband is a golf pro at a local country club and we debated this as an excursion. The views just look incredible. Has anyone done a golf excursion? Is it worth the money? We would have to rent clubs since we wouldn't bring them with us.

He's a golf pro at a local club?

Is it worth it?

I can't possibly answer "is it worth it" for you. My worth it and your worth it are too random.

Regarding golf. Some things recently changed at Carnival and their relationship with Elite Golf. Theoretically, Carnival was terminating their relationship with Elite Golf at the end of September. Then Carnival was going to go in house with their golf program. I don't know if that truely happened.

Here is what I can share.

I have golfed twice during a cruise excursion. Once in Cozumel at the Cozumel Golf and Country Club and once (just recently) in Nassua Bahama at Cable Beach Golf Club.

First time, I took my own clubs. It was a guys cruise. Second time, I rented. Both times it was a Carnival excursion hosted by Elite Golf.

Elite Golf was the company Carnival contracted with to host their golf program. Most of the on board pro's were young kids out of college who are maybe waiting to get on their first tour. All clubs, balls, etc were Nike equipment.

The rental clubs were mostly Slingshot 40 full cavity clubs. If your husband is a local pro, I can't imagine him using those clubs.

Was it a little pricey? Yes it is. Was it worth it for me? Yeah, I enjoyed it. I'm an 18 hcp. We were escorted first off the ship due to time constraints. The pro gave some advise to help our swings, carts were provided. Balls fir the range to loosen up.

How was the experience? Priceless. Not many of my peers at the local muni have pix, shirts, or hats from Caribbean golf courses they have actually played.

My husband and some friends are planning on golfing there in a couple of weeks; however, Carnival no longer offers this excursion so they are doing it on their own. Do you remember how long a taxi ride it was from the port to the club?

I have not played while on a cruise but I try to get at lest one round in whenever we are on a land vacation. It is a little pricy but I have managed to play some beautiful courses in Mexico, Hawaii, and other Caribbean islands.

IMO if he is a pro it is a not to be missed event whether he plays on an organized excursion, or just on his own.

My husband and grown son played in March on the Destiny in Jamaica. They are both good golfers. They rented their clubs. My husband said he would not try to take his clubs considering the cost of baggage on airlines now. I believe they rented Nike clubs and he felt they were adequate.

It was pricey, however, he expected that it would be. It was only my husband, son and the golf pro. The only downside was that my husband was not at all impressed with the golf course they visited. My husband and son both said they had a very good time and would do it again.

If Carnival opens up the Excursion to Caye Chapel in Belize again, I would say BOOK the golf excursion,

My husband did this excursion and said it was the best $225 he had ever spent... We are booked on the Dream for January and the only reason we booked the group on this tinerary was because of this excursion, ( now CCL isnt offering it )

they took the golfers off the ship first (private tender ) to the pier, then took them by taxi's to the airport, where they took small plane, to a private course, the golf carts were waiting for them... They played 18 holes, had lunch and cocktails use of the resorts facilities ( pool, hot tub etc ) the back to the ship via plane, taxi and tender ( last tender )

my father and father-in-law golfed on st. thomas their cruise before we were on the dream last week. they did not golf on the dream last week. I thought about doing it but with the 2.5 year old I felt I needed to spend more time with him :)

they both enjoyed the course on st. thomas but felt that overall it was expensive. booking on your own will save you money but will not get you the same experience - no golf pro, no fellow cruisers, etc

as most golfers will tell you, nothing is better than using their own clubs :)

here is mohagany run on st thomas

you have plenty of ports for the legend to golf. as mentioned above, whether or not it is worth it depends on the golfer. I loved golfing in Maui although it was expensive.

We are cruising on the dream Jan 1st. My husband has been planning to golf in St. Thomas. But I'm noticing it is not listed on the excursions list. Is this just cancelled or will they add it eventually? Any ideas? He will be so disappointed if he can't do the golf excursion. Does anyone do the golf excursions on their own?

Thanks for any help or advice!

Debbie

  • 3 weeks later...

If you read post #2 you'll see that Carnival terminated their contract with Elite Golf who was the golf vendor.

They have not renewed with anyone therefore Carnival is not offering golf excursions at this time.

Does not mean that you cannot contact the course directly to receive a tee time and possible help with transportation
