Norovirus on Sapphire

Last post from Sapphire: This will probably be my last post-the Internet Cafe gets very busy & seems to be very slow at times. The captain last reported a few more cases, but again, everyone has been doing a great job to help control the situation. The Captains Circle repeater party was canceled. One person in our group wrote a letter complaining & she & her husband had drinks with the captain & his wife last night!! In lieu of the party, they gave us a drink coupon per person. They opened the laundramats yesterday, so I really think the worse is over. I did talk with the pursurs office today and we will be arriving in Sydney one hour earlier-so, not much extra time for cleaning up before the next group gets on. I hope the next voyage fairs better!! Again, the crew has done a great job of handling this in my opinion.

Thanks for the update Cruiserdoc.

I have my clorox wipes all set to go! Putting them in my carry on for immediate use when we board.

I can't believe someone actually wrote a letter to complain about the Captains Circle party being cancelled. Sheesh...the crew had more important things to worry about.

I haven't heard anything about the NoroVirus but I can tell you that the Sapphire is headed for Cairns were there is a Cyclone right now. Hopefully they all packed seasick meds for this current cruise.

I got an email from a friend in AU this morning telling me they are in for a very rough ride. :(

Bring clorox wipes and wipe the handle of the toilet.....the light switches and the handle on the inside of the bathroom door....and whatever you use to turn the hot and cold water on in the bathroom. If you think about it those would be the areas most likely to be contaminated. (nursing degree 1990)

When I enter a hotel room, the first thing I do is remove the bedspread. I saw that on the news years ago. Don't even want to think about what might be on the bedspread.

Once you do your wipe down...think positive thoughts and enjoy your vacation.

One major germ playground is the casino. On my last cruise, I saw this man sneezing all over various slot machines. It was obvious that he had a bad cold and he was intent on sharing it with the rest of his fellow cruisers. He didn't use a hankie when he sneezed, he just sprayed everywhere. I was so grossed out, I didn't go back to the casino for the remainder of the trip. Just something to keep in mind next time you venture into the casino.

Thank you for sharing this with us Italy. I never even thought of this way of spreading it. I guess we need to use germ wipes on the slot machines too. I will also wash my hands before and after the casino. I cannot remember if they give you moistened towelettes in the ship casino but I do think I they did. Happy Sailing, Joy

We recently did the land & sea with Sapphire Australia / New Zealand(1/27/05 to 2/11/05) and I caught a bug and was able to kick it however my wife came down with it and has seen our doctor 3 times this week.I generaly don't ever catch anything and was puzzeled, now I see this Norovirus....WOW.Makes me wonder if that is the root of our problem.

We were on the Sapphire New Zealand/Australia on 2/23/05 to 3/7/05. There were over 200 cases of the norvirus according to a lady who was "confined to quarters" for 48 hours. Talked to another passenger who was in for 72 hours. Didn't make us feel too comfortable as they were sneezing ad hacking away constantly at the table we were sharing!

The Captain did confirm the fact that the ship had been afflicted with the virus though he did not state how many cases there were - and the fact that some of the crew members had come down with it.

The way it was stated, one would have thought it was a sudden chance occurance and not that the ship had cases just immediately before our sailing.

Sounds like the Sapphire is having some problems. Hope they get rid of the norovirus and fix the mechanical problem. Guess we'll have to wait for an update until the next group of passengers return unless someone posts while on board.

Hi SF: I am waiting also for the latest news. We will be on the Saphire on April 23 Osaka to Seattle. Barbara which has been posting on our thread is joining the ship ahead of time in Bangkok and I believe she will keep us posted on everything. If anyone else has heard any news I know we are all are anxious to know. The mechanical problem on the Saphire is suppose to be a computer problem with software. Happy Sailing, Joy

I just heard from someone on the Saphire that they are still having mechanical problems and missed a port in Vietnam.. I have not heard any more news of the norovirus but if I do I will report on it. The Saphire is heading for Singapore now. Hopefully they will be able to clear this problem up. Happy Sailing, Joy
Virofree is a spray that kills viruses and bacteria and can be ordered from www.onestepahead.com very good product . We are taking it with us next week on the Westerdam .Gorka
The ad says it's for babies. I wonder why they don't says it's for adults as well.

We will be sailing on the April 23rd sailing of the Saphire Princess. I just heard from someone on the Saphire now that there has been another outbreak of norovirus but they are keeping it under control. This is so sad to hear that the virus is still happening it is quite a worry I have never been on a ship that this has happened before. I truly hope for all concerned that they are able to clear it up. Joy

Sorry to hear that the Sapphire has trouble with the noro virus again. Hopefully someone on board now will post and let us know what's going on in regards to that and the engine problem.

With so many problems I'm wondering if we should switch ships???

SF: If you go to the Pricess sailing April 23,2005 roll call you will be able to find what Barbara said about the Saphire. The mechanical problems are under control and even though they do have some cases of the norovirus they are working hard on keeping it under control. I am bringing clorox wipes with me. Barbara wrote today and said that the Saphire is in Hong Kong now. Happy Sailing, Joy P.S. I am going to sail on her anyway! My husband says with all that has happened they should have everything under control by the time we board.

Joyfredsblondecruiser:

Hi. I hope you're right and things settle down on the Sapphire. That ship certainly has had it's problems recently. We were actually thinking of switching ships but that would have put a dent in our plans and cost us more to change around air and hotel so for now we're sitting with what we have. I'm going to check out the April 23rd roll call thread. Hope someone keeps us informed and up to date on what's happening. Will you be posting while on your trip to let us know how things are going?

Hi there,
we were on the Sapphire - 3 week Asia cruise. There had been an outbreak before our cruise, and the crew did a WONDERFUL job of sanitizing that ship, we had no one we knew on the cruise who was sick in the 3 weeks, the staff were superb in their efforts in keeping that ship clean, we had a wonderful time and have booked again for a 4 weeker in a years time. Happy cruising everyone...

We were with S and D (Hi Sandra and Dave!) on the Sapphire and I can only agree with all their comments. The ship was immaculate, the staff continually cleaning at all hours of the day and night, we interacted with a huge amount of people and didn't speak to anyone who got ill or knew of anyone who was ill.

Since returning I have read quite a few comments about the Sapphire, most from people who haven't sailed on her, and I really wonder if we are all talking about the same ship:rolleyes: !! This was our 12th cruise and the best ever!! If you are booked on the Sapphire, you are in for a treat, enjoy!!:)

Love Sue x
