Heavy rainfall associated with Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi is expected to

develop in coastal and adjacent inland areas between Cooktown and Sarina during

this evening and overnight. Fast river level rises and localised flash flooding

Areas on the southern side of STC Yasi and those near the eye are at most risk

of heavy rain of between 200mm to 300mm. Catchments at risk include the

Daintree, Mossman, Barron, Mulgrave/Russell, Johnstone, Tully/Murray, Herbert,

Ross, Bohle ,Black, Haughton, Burdekin, Don, Proserpine, Pioneer and

Connors/Isaac Rivers. Fast river level rises and localised flash flooding may

occur. Rainfalls recorded during the past 3 hours have been between 20-50mm

along the coast between Cairns and Mackay.

 

The situation will be closely monitored and flood warnings for individual

catchments will be issued when required

Sugar cane growers brace themselves for another hit

MORE than $1 billion could be ripped from sugar cane growers because of devastation of the crop, first by heavy rains and now cyclone Yasi.

Sugar farmers in far north Queensland were bracing themselves yesterday for the cyclone, more than 600-kilometre-wide and generating winds of up to 290km/h.

The chief executive of Canegrowers, Steve *********, predicted a loss of $500 million. About 30 per cent of Australia's sugar crop lies within the cyclone's path.

Farmers left more than $500 million worth of sugar cane in the field late last year because of the heavy rains, and cyclone Larry destroyed up to 50 per cent of the nation's crop five years ago.

Mr ********* said some growers might never recover from the latest storm.

Families turned away at North Queensland refuges

TERRIFIED evacuees were turned away from makeshift refuges yesterday as 75,000 north Queensland residents fled their homes in the face of Cyclone Yasi's fury.

More than 10,000 residents and tourists, bearing their own food and bedding, took shelter in 20 centres set up in schools, sports complexes, community halls and even a shopping centre.

All had locked their doors by lunchtime, leaving residents forced from flood-prone homes to find their own shelter with friends, family or strangers.

Soldiers joined police yesterday in a doorknock to deliver mandatory evacuation orders to the most vulnerable residents in coastal communities between Cairns and Townsville.

Townsville residents are battling through a sleepless night as Cyclone Yasi unleashes her fury on the north Queensland coast.

Gulliver residents Troy and Carly Lubicz are nervously waiting in the dark as the storm buffets their post-war Queenslander.

"The rain is pelting and, while we can't go outside, trees are leaning over as they're whipped by the wind," Ms Lubicz told AAP.

"We heard some local power lines have come down, but the most worrying thing is knowing it will get worse and we're wondering what will happen when the flooding sets in."

About 89,000 homes are now without power across north Queensland, with Townsville the worst hit.

I think that it is amzing how a storm that started out near port vila and turned into a cyclone way out there and was a hazzard to shipping and ended up a huge cat 5 cyclone that ends up hitting the east coast of Australia Tully/ mission beach that is near Cardwell, innisfail, Dunk island Townsville, Cairns.

Australia: Cyclone Yasi Hits Queensland Coast

 

Cyclone Yasi has crossed the Queensland coast at Mission Beach just now. About 80000 homes have lost power and is reeling in darkness. Centre of Townsville has also lost electricity.

Winds of upto 290-300 kilometres per hour are about to hit the Australian coast, posing a serious threat to life and poverty. The cyclonic winds are travelling WSWat a speed of 27Km/hr. The affected areas extend from Cape Flattery to Sarina.

A Cyclone WARNING is current for coastal and island communities from Cape

Flattery to Proserpine, extending west across the tropical interior to the

Northern Territory border.

 

At 12:00 am EST Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi, Category 5 was estimated to be 120

kilometres south southeast of Cairns and 50 kilometres southeast of Innisfail

and moving west southwest at 27 kilometres per hour.

 

THE LARGE DESTRUCTIVE CORE OF CYCLONE YASI IS STARTING TO CROSS THE COAST

BETWEEN INNISFAIL AND CARDWELL, WITH A DANGEROUS STORM TIDE AND BATTERING WAVES

TO THE SOUTH OF THE CYCLONE CENTRE.

 

Tropical Cyclone Yasi, CATEGORY 5, will continue to move inland in a

west-southwesterly direction towards the Georgetown area during the morning.

 

As the cyclone crosses the coast, an EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SEA LEVEL RISE [i.e.

storm tide] will occur between Innisfail and Ayr, peaking between Mission Beach

and Lucinda.

 

Higher than normal tides exceeding the high water mark, and damaging waves will

continue between Cairns and Proserpine until at least the morning high tide.

 

VERY DESTRUCTIVE winds with gusts up to 290 km/h between Cairns and Ingham and

the adjacent ranges will extend inland and gradually weaken.

 

The VERY DESTRUCTIVE CORE of the cyclone will take up to 4 hours to pass.

 

DESTRUCTIVE winds with gusts in excess of 125 km/h between Cape Tribulation and

Ayr will spread inland overnight.

 

DAMAGING WINDS with gusts to 90 km/hr are occurring in remaining coastal areas

between Cape Flattery and Proserpine, and are forecast to extend through to Mt

Isa during Thursday.

 

Winds are forecast to gradually ease about the east coast during Thursday

morning.

 

FLOODING RAINS will develop from Cooktown to Proserpine tonight and gradually

extend inland.

 

People in the path of the very dangerous cyclone should stay calm and remain in

a secure shelter, above the expected water level, while the very destructive

winds continue.

- Do not venture outside if you find yourself in the eye of the cyclone; very

destructive winds from a different direction could resume at any time.

- Follow the evacuation advice or directions of Police, Emergency Services

personnel and local authorities.

 

People in remaining areas between Cape Flattery and Proserpine and extending

west across the tropical interior to the Northern Territory border, should

complete preparations quickly and be prepared to shelter in a safe place.

The Cyclone Warning is cancelled between Cape Tribulation and Port Douglas and

between Proserpine to Bowen.

 

At 6:00 am EST Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi, Category 3 was estimated to be 110

kilometres east southeast of Georgetown and 165 kilometres west southwest of

Cardwell and moving west southwest at 35 kilometres per hour.

 

YASI WILL CONTINUE TO PRODUCE HEAVY RAIN AND DANGEROUS WIND GUSTS AS IT MOVES

ACROSS THE TROPICAL INTERIOR.

Cairns survives Yasi with little damage

Cyclone Yasi has left Cairns relatively unscathed and the city will be open for business "very soon", the city's mayor says.

"The CBD and our beautiful esplanade in Cairns is unscathed," Mayor Val Schier said on Thursday morning.

"We're very relieved this morning."

Yasi crossed at Mission Beach, south of Cairns about midnight as a category five. Mission Beach, Tully, Tully Heads, and Cardwell appear to have borne the monster cyclone's full force.

Cairns was well prepared and people were inside and "bunkered down" on a very windy night, Ms Schier.

TOWNSVILLE: Dawn reveals storm impact

 

SUNRISE in Townsville revealed the true strength of Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi's power with cyclonic winds still pounding the coastal city six hours after the storm made landfall at Mission Beach.

Around 5.30am the garrison town was still being blasted by gale force winds up to 125km/h, according to the latest Bureau of Meteorology warning issued at 4.49am.

 

 

The category five monster, which crossed the coast about midnight, has been downgraded to a severe category three but is still packing a punch despite moving inland.

Cyclone Yasi wreaks havoc in Mission Beach, Tully and Innisfail

 

SMALL Queensland coastal communities are assessing the extent of the damage this morning after Cyclone Yasi unleashed its fury with winds over 200km/h.

Cairns was spared but Mission Beach, Tully, Tully Heads, and Cardwell appear to have borne the brunt of the category five cyclone, which crossed the coast about midnight local time.

“It does seem Cairns has been spared the worst and that's a great relief,” Premier Anna Bligh told the Nine Network.

She was also buoyed by the birth of a girl at a Cairns evacuation centre. A Red Cross official said the girl was delivered healthy at 6.09am (AEST) after a three-hour labour.

Ms Bligh said this morning there had been no reports of any deaths or serious injuries as a result of the cyclone.

But she it was too early to “talk about dodging bullets”.
