Alaska cruise

I have read over and over again that the alaska cruises are not as formal as the rest. My alaska cruise was my first so I have nothing to compare it to yet, but there was ladies in formals and ladies in black slacks and everything inbetween. I did not feel out of place wearing a short polyester knit dress and heels on formal nights nor black slacks and a silky blouse all the rest of the nights for dinner. Also being a newbie i changed from my dressy dress to black slacks after dinner since the boat was really rocking that night and heels were making it hard to stay stable when everyone is walking like they are drunk from the ship movemnet and I did not feel like I stood out at all. So my best guess is yes they are less formal.

I've been on HAL and Princess in Alaska and wore formal - both long dresses as well as evening suits that were to the knee. Carnival - which has "Elegant NIght" instead of "formal" might have more variability in what people wear. That's the cruise line, not the destination.
