CGBCruiser Posted June 4, 2011 #26 Share Posted June 4, 2011 I don't know but it says it cost $100 million dollars to build...can you imagine tearing it down? I never knew the reason for not using the terminal but now I do. The cruise companies don't want to pay the extra 3 hours worth of fuel to get to the coast.....obviously someone did not think this through:rolleyes: It's very sad, and a total waste of a beautiful cruise terminal..... Doesn't it take a few hours to sail from New Orleans to the Gulf? I'm not sure it's the 3 hours...there's not a darn thing around that terminal except tanks and chemical plants. I heard that they have been using it to dock ships for repairs. Total waste!!! Wayne Dolcefino on Channel 13 has ripped the Port Authority apart over the whole project! Jimnbigd Posted June 6, 2011 #27 Share Posted June 6, 2011 Well, sailing from Galveston the casino can open much earlier, and bars can serve all drinks sooner instead of the limited selection Texas law requires. Plus I'm sure it costs to have a port pilot on longer, which I assume is required when sailing the channel.

MrSnarkyPants Posted June 28, 2011 #30 Share Posted June 28, 2011 Just got off the Carnival Conquest in Galveston last Sunday. Our porter said they are tearing down the Bayport terminal. Anyone know for sure? Thanks. "Your tax dollars at work." While Wayne Dolcefino tore the port authority a new one recently, they haven't announced any plans to do anything with the building. The port is still trying to find someone to sail out of there. http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/13_undercover&id=8110233 Dolcefino has his guns locked on the Port of Houston: 17 stories ripping the port to shreds since May. If they do anything to that cruise terminal, he'll be ready to mock them on TV for it.

If they tore it down now, the port has already gotten what they wanted. They'll be laughing at that reporter behind closed doors. Count on it. If they tore it down now, the port has already gotten what they wanted. They'll be laughing at that reporter behind closed doors. Count on it. Right you are! It was simply a bone thrown to the taxpayers, so that the bond issue would pass. There is no way that any cruise line would consider homeporting a ship there, for reasons that have already been enumerated here ad nauseum. Both sides need to stop whipping this dead horse and move on. The POHA should concede defeat, and develop another use for the building ... more than likely a repair facility. After being turned down by virtually every cruise line (as well as two more committing to Galveston), it's the only viable option. Dolcefino and his cohorts have to stop the drama. We know all about this boondoggle now, so there's no point in keeping it in front of the viewers. If anything, he ought to follow up with suggestions as to how the money spent can be recovered, or at least negated by a productive use of the terminal. In the meantime, I need to pack ... we're cruising out of Galveston this weekend. Al

yst347 Posted July 11, 2011 #35 Share Posted July 11, 2011 It's been a few years since we sailed from New Orleans but IIRC we spent eight hours sailing down river before reaching the Gulf, and nine hours sailing up river to reach the pier. The casino opened about an hour or two after we set sail, many hours before reaching the Gulf and international waters.
