Florida_cruisers Posted March 1, 2005 #1 Share Posted March 1, 2005 I am thinking about upgrading to a platinum account from my gold card. I use the card a lot to accumulate miles and pay it off every month, so the interest rate is not important. Here is the deal: Gold: $85 annual fee Platinum: $135 Difference of $50 but then with the platinum, you get a free companion coach class domestic ticket every year you renew. The way it works is that you pay one flat amount, depending on the zone for two airfares. Example: From Fl to San Francisco will be $398 for both of us, plus taxes and fees. Also, an extra 15,000 miles when I get it and make my first purchase. We love to accumulate our miles and go on one special trip every year with free airfare. This year is the Mediterranean, and hopefully next year is Hawaii. Is it worth upgrading, you think?? I am not sure yet, I am having my doubts.... rwdtgb Posted March 1, 2005 #2 Share Posted March 1, 2005 I did it and I think it was well worth the difference in annual fee, plus I liked the 15 thousand miles.
Florida_cruisers Posted March 1, 2005 Author #3 Share Posted March 1, 2005 I just realized that the 15,000 miles award is for new customer. Upgrades only get 5,000 miles.
HopingtoCruiseSoon Posted March 2, 2005 #4 Share Posted March 2, 2005 I did it and don't think it was such a great deal. The certificate cannot be used very easily. When I tried to use the companion certificate it was only for very limited flights at off times that naturally wouldn't be popular.
kelmac Posted March 3, 2005 #5 Share Posted March 3, 2005 I signed up a couple of years ago and built up enough credit for a couple of tickets. Used up the "freebees, then negotiated a nonfee card with a lower interest rate. Now, I use my Southwest Visa most of the time. Good luck!
