I see that the Legend is scheduled for dry dock. We are scheduled to sail that her in Jan 06.

Can I expect major enhancements or just general wear and tear upgrades. I am hoping for a concierge lounge or alternative restaurant (not JR’s)

Anyone know?

Thanks,

Marci

I am just wondering what to expect after drydock - I suppose with the NOS it is just general repairs and maintenance and no major alterations- but what to expect reg. embarkation - do you think we will be able to board earlier as there are no passengers to disembark or will it be a last-minute thing?

Does anyone have any experiences with cruising on a ship coming straight from drydock?

I'm surprised the Voyager isnt in there.

Hello -

Voyager was in drydock in early '04 for refurb. They rotate ships into drydock on about a three-four year schedule, I think. I was on her last October and she was in pretty good shape. Obviously not a brand new ship, but overall clean and nothing too out of sorts. I think you were on her this Feb? What did you think of her condition?

I was also on the Voyager last Feb (04) and last week, so it wasn't then she was in drydock - it doesn't seem to me she's improved since we were on her - maybe Last January (04)? She's really showing her age...there are plumbing issues - we had to move to a different stateroom due to toilet stench (urine)...apparently, they had problems on decks 6 and 7 with all the toilets. The walls in the cabins (next to the beds) were torn in places (the suede material)..stains on carpet in hallways (not too much, tho) and the diagram of the ship next to each elevator is worn off (the lettering). Not deal breakers, but we definitely will be trying out a newer ship next time.

  • 1 month later...

Does anyone know if they will be replacing the metal in front of the balconies on the older Voyager class ships as they go into drydock? Someone mentioned that they would all eventually be clear plexiglass like on the Mariner & Navigator?

Interesting - I can go to RCCL's website and book a cruise on Majesty for Oct 3, 05.

I almost feel like doing it just to see what compensation I can get if they cancel.

I guess they must have changed the schedule cause cruisecal has it sailing on the 3rd to the Bahamas

I'm surprised the Voyager isnt in there.

Looking at next Spring's schedules, Voyager's last Caribbean run arrives back

in Miami on the 6th of May, but the first Mediterranean departure from Barcelona

is not until 27th May, so allowing for a (not yet announced) 14 night transatlantic,

that still leaves a 'spare' week for dry-dock.

That's my theory, anyway...

Since I'm new to this:

What does drydock mean? Overhaul?

If so, any chance of the Mariner getting one before June 2006?

TIA,

Drydocking does not necessarily mean the ship is going in for improvements or a major overhaul, for the most part it is a short visit for repairs & inspections, gives them a chance to check structural integrity of the ship, scraping and repainting of the hull, etc. Think of it as going to the doctor for a checkup.

It could include renovating of some public areas and rooms, etc., but a lot of those items are done during the regular course of business. On some of my cruises I have seen carpet replaced in common areas and the casino. While we were in port one day, they closed one side of the floor in the morning and replaced carpet, then closed the other side in the afternoon and by the time everyone was back on board the carpet had been totally replaced. I have seen new furniture being loaded one morning while we were boarding a ship in Miami, etc.

When the ship is undergoing a major renovation it would most likely be taken out of service for a longer period. Currently Enchantment is in drydock, and they are actually stretching the ship (cutting it in the middle and adding a new section and then welding back together), believe there is a link on here somewhere that showed how they were going to do it. If I am not mistaken, they said it would take 30 days to complete and have back in service.

Drydock in early 2006? Possibly (perhaps probably). Overhaul? For Heaven's sake--Mariner is less than 2 years old now. By then, she will be just over 2-1/2 years old; not exactly ancient.

RCI seems to drydock their ships every 2-1/2 to 3 years. As mentioned, this is usually like a major check up: hull inspection/maintenance, painting, repairs, extra cleaning, sometimes upgrades/improvements (although Mariner is the newest ship in the fleet right now, so unlikely because there's not much to upgrade), replacing things that really need replacing--if they replace everything every few years, cruise prices would go through the roof, it's just to darn expensive.

I can't imagine that you will be disappointed with Mariner, even if you go on her before her first drydock. :D

Barry,

I am also going on the Radiance of the Seas this fall and am wondering the same thing. Her last drydock was in April of 2003 and I have been told that RCCL drydocks ships every 2 years so that would mean she is up for a drydock at some point this year, and I am curious as to when.

I had seen a cruise schedule with all of the ships listed and their itineraries and drydocks blocked off but I don't remember where I saw it... hopefully someone on here can give us some insight...

We sailed on the Radiance last September to Hawaii. While that was almost 8 months ago, at that time the Radiance was in pristine condition. She is an absolutely beaufiful ship, spotless and showing no signs of wear. Ships constantly have carpets replaced, etc. so even if she doesn't go into drydock before you sail, I don't believe you'll have any concerns.

Have a great cruise.
