TurfTycoon Posted February 11, 2011 #1 Share Posted February 11, 2011 If our ship docks at Monte Carlo and we are taking a private tour of the French Riviera, do we need to retrieve our passports from the ship to enter into France? I'm assuming / guessing no  - if we're already in Monaco then there are no border controls between the two countries?
JLC@SD Posted February 11, 2011 #2 Share Posted February 11, 2011 All the times we have travelled from Monaco to France (including docking at Monaco) we have not had to show a passport.
texancruzer Posted February 11, 2011 #3 Share Posted February 11, 2011 We visited Monaco/Monte Carlo while docked in Villefranche. We also went to Nice and Eze. Basically there is a sign on the side of the road that says "Monaco" Our guide pointed it out otherwise we would not have known France from Monaco...... Rare TLCOhio Posted February 11, 2011 #4 Share Posted February 11, 2011 Agree with the earlier posts that Monaco is in many ways, very much a part of France (except for tax purposes if a legal resident in this small community). For most of Europe, things are very "seamless" as you cross borders and move around. THANKS! Enjoy! tom_uk Posted February 11, 2011 #5 Share Posted February 11, 2011 It's not just Monaco to France. You're inside the Schengen Zone in both of those countries, and the borders within the Zone are completely open. So you can, for example, drive from Portugal to the tip of Italy without showing any official documentation. As long as you are moving direct from one Zone country to another, without leaving the zone - passports not required. Of course, you have to show passports to enter the Zone which is why passengers from N America have to go through immigration, etc, when they land at whichever airport that arrive at, e.g. Paris, Rome, Amsterdam
Rare Hlitner Posted February 11, 2011 #6 Share Posted February 11, 2011 You do not need to carry your passport within the EU (including Monoco and France) and it is wise to leave the document securely locked in your cabin safe (some cruise lines will take will actually hold your passport during most of your cruise). It is a good idea to make a photocopy of your main passport page and carry that on your person. Some banks that cash Travelers Checks (many places will no longer accept TCs) will sometimes ask to see your passport (the photocopy is good enough) in order to record your passport number in their records.
