Sweetpea711423 Posted February 18, 2011 #1 Share Posted February 18, 2011 Does anyone know if lighter fluid is sold onboard the QM2 at the gift shop or some place like that? I would like to give my husband a lighter I bought as a surprise birthday present while we are onboard for a crossing, but it will need fluid for him to be able to use it. Thanks for any help you can give.

Thanks for any help you can give. I am fairly sure that it is not sold on board. I suggest that you take some with you, we used to be able to buy the fluid in a rubbery/plastic container that held just enough for one fill and would then be discarded. Don't know if they are still available.

Unfortunately lighter fluid is not permitted to be carried onboard as carryon luggage or as checked luggage on airplanes in the US (We will be flying from the US to London to do a westbound crossing). So I wouldn't be able to do your otherwise very helpful suggestion.

I suggest that you buy it from a tobacconist in Southampton or London, you may not be able to get the one shot items but you can certainly get the fuel in a small can. Good idea. May be hard to pull off since he'll be with me and I want it to be a surprise when I present him with the lighter onboard ship, but may be worth a try. Thanks for your suggestion. Fill it with nail varnish remover. It's only acetone and burns quicker but it works. Glenn.

Sweetpea711423 Posted February 19, 2011 Author #9 Share Posted February 19, 2011 Thanks, folks for your help and suggestions. Here's the final solution I came up with: TSA allows lighters with fuel in checked bagged if the lighter is in a TSA approved case. So I bought a case on ebay (around $18), and will fill the lighter before we leave and put it in the checked baggage in the TSA approved case (and put it somewhere my husband won't see it). Now I just have to hope that our luggage doesn't get lost (knock wood)! Thanks again.

garigoun Posted February 19, 2011 #11 Share Posted February 19, 2011 Sweetpea, have you any idea how incredibly lucky you are. 9 posts concerning a device for igniting tobacco and not one, not ONE, admonition concerning your dear husband's habit from the ever watchful ranks of the Anti-smoking Popular Front. Must be something of a record. BTW congrats on sorting out a plan so he can have his surprise. Gari

A Puzzled Gari I mention it merely as an example of a more serious lapse in standards when compared to smoking. :D

Oh yeah, smoking's a bad habit.

Butane lighters have no soul, zippos and their ilk have history, they be old fashioned and slightly smelly but lots of things are, present company excepted..:eek:
northernsailor Posted February 20, 2011 #17 Share Posted February 20, 2011 I bought a cigar lighter on my last QV voyage - the barman kindly filled it for me from the Commodore club. I assume they probably have the ability to fill whatever lighter you have if you ask nicely :) Chris

And I remember, in my well-spent youth, practising for hours until I could do that really cool trick of flicking the top open and lighting it at the same time. That really impressed the girls. (Gives you some idea of the type of girl I went out with.) (( I mean of course ... with whom I went out.)) A Zippy Gari

sociologist Posted February 23, 2011 #21 Share Posted February 23, 2011 I have never seen lighter fluid for sale on a Cunard ship. Or chewing gum. Cunard would like to ban smoking everywhere on board due to safety issues. Smoking is only permitted in your cabin, in the upper level of the G32 night club, and at several posted locations on deck. No smoking in the casinos, in the Golden Lion pub or at any bar or lounge. That's due to a continuing trend away from smoking being encouraged anywhere. One minute it's due to safety issues, the next it's down to "a continuing trend away from smoking being encouraged anywhere". As you are obviously privy to inside knowledge, I think we should be told which it is:D. Oh, and for the benefit of beleagured fellow smokers, it's also permitted in Churchill's and on balconies; rumour has it, though, that it's scheduled to be banned in cabins. Sadly, banning sanctimony is not yet on the agenda.:( Mary
