Nezmo Posted February 23, 2011 #2 Share Posted February 23, 2011 I have driven to Houston, stayed the night then gone on to Galveston. Doesn't take long down 45.
firefly333 Posted February 23, 2011 #3 Share Posted February 23, 2011 I would never fly, as Galveston is one of the ports the most expensive to get to from the airports in Houston of any port I know. Its a drive to port. I go down and get a hotel on seawall now. I used to drive in the day of the cruise.

PSkinner Posted February 23, 2011 Author #6 Share Posted February 23, 2011 We drove to Houston a few years back for our son's high school state championship game in Dec and 45 was very foggy. It took us over 5 hours from just NE of Dallas. Is August any better? We want to drive in on Saturday, spend the day at the beach, then cruise on Sunday. Just wondering about fog at that time of year. School starts the next day and we want to have plenty of time to get back home. Thanks for all the answers. truchattycathy Posted February 23, 2011 #7 Share Posted February 23, 2011 We always drive. I don't think fog will be an issue in August. We leave as soon as we get off the ship and are home in the early afternoon. Have a great crusie.
True Texan Posted February 23, 2011 #8 Share Posted February 23, 2011 I live in the Houston area and don't think I have ever seen thick fog in August. It usually occurs in spring. Last year we were on RCCL out of Galveston and it was delayed due to fog but that was in April.
platinum.wannabe Posted February 23, 2011 #9 Share Posted February 23, 2011 I'm an hour NE of Dallas and a little 5 hours is about how long it takes. We plan to drive down and stay the night before like we did for our honeymoon 8 years ago. It worked out nicely. You shouldn't have any fog problems in August but it probably will take you 5 hours and a little bit.
CINDYSUE Posted February 23, 2011 #10 Share Posted February 23, 2011 I love Galveston so much, we are going down three days before this next cruise just to "hang". Like the others said, I have heard getting from the airport to Galveston is a hassle and costly, so you are better off going down the day before or a couple of days before and leisurely relax before you get on the ship. panoramaofthepast Posted February 24, 2011 #11 Share Posted February 24, 2011 Do you drive or fly to Galveston? Which is the more economical way to go; which is easier? We drive in from Dallas the day before. Hotel costs and parking are generally less expensive than flying in and then paying for a shuttle to Galveston. Just be careful not to hit Houston duiring rush hour on a weekday - that takes forever! EZCruise parking is $50/week on-line;they shuttle you to the port and are there to pick you up when you return. Many hotels offer free cruise parking. Have fun.
nlt46 Posted February 24, 2011 #12 Share Posted February 24, 2011 I've driven to Galveston a day early and I've driven the day of the cruise. Both were fine. It is just what you like doing. I wouldn't fly down as one would spend as much time at the airport and have very little control. Nancy
Echo Queen Posted February 25, 2011 #13 Share Posted February 25, 2011 We live in the Austin area but will be leaving our boys in Dallas with family spending 4 days in Houston with friends before. We always go down at least a day early with no problems.
