Gypsywych Posted March 4, 2011 #26 Share Posted March 4, 2011 It would not bother me at all for you to ask me when I "usually" smoke on my balcony. It would not bother me at all if you were to ask me not to smoke if your children are on the balcony. I try not to bother people with my bad habit. As long as you are polite and upbeat about it, I'll work with you. However, coming out onto the balcony when I'm already out there and doing the coughcoughcough routine will likely make me smoke a 2nd one. ;)
MagSeven1413 Posted March 4, 2011 #27 Share Posted March 4, 2011 Maybe I'm reading the OP's post wrong, but the OP does not want to ask so that the neighbor changes his/her schedule. Since most people are creatures of habit and have morning and evening routines (whether we acknowledge that or not), it can't hurt for the OP to ask. My DW is a smoker and likes to have a cigarette (maybe 2) on the balcony with her morning coffee. It is her schedule and since we're up by 7am she wouldn't have a problem answering the question nicely. She might have one prior to our late dinner seating and then probably later after the lounges close. She is also considerate enough to try to not offend a neigbor. Sure there will be exceptions, but no harm in asking - if the question is posed nicely.
raggedyann6 Posted March 4, 2011 Author #28 Share Posted March 4, 2011 Sure... ask them to be on a schedule of when they smoke on their balcony and to work around your schedule when you will be on your balcony... Im sure that will go over really well !!! Hi, I never said I was asking them to work around my schedule, I was thinking I would not be around when they thought they would be smoking. I am not around smokers so I (mistakenly) thought that some had some regular times they liked to smoke. You are right if I did want them to work around me that would go over really well LOL
MagSeven1413 Posted March 4, 2011 #29 Share Posted March 4, 2011 However, coming out onto the balcony when I'm already out there and doing the coughcoughcough routine will likely make me smoke a 2nd one. ;) I always laugh when someone does that. People will do that in the smoking section of the casino back home, too. The majority of smokers that I have dealt with are very willing to work with non-smoker neighbors. hankandteri Posted March 4, 2011 #31 Share Posted March 4, 2011 I'm an ex-smoker, but back in the day I wouldn't think you were being rude if you asked my smoking "schedule"--I'd just think you were a little nuts. I'm one of those oddballs who loves the smell of tobacco smoke. I love the way nicotine makes me feel. In fact I love everything about smoking except for the minor drawback that it will kill you. It's been years since I put out my last butt, but if they started making non-carcinogenic cigarettes I'd be the first in line to buy a pack. So if you're a smoker and you've got the balcony next to me, blow a little my way, won't you?
habby Posted March 4, 2011 #32 Share Posted March 4, 2011 Hi, My question to smokers is, if our neighbors smoke on their balcony would it be rude of me to ask them when they usually smoke so I can make sure we are not out on our balcony when they smoke? . I haven't (and won't) bother to read the other replies to your question. Bottom line is that no, it would not be rude at all.
zqvol Posted March 4, 2011 #33 Share Posted March 4, 2011 Hi, My 2 teen age daughters and I are taking a 7 day Mexican Riviera cruise in a few weeks on the Carnival Splendor. This will be the 1st time I have ever cruised in a balcony cabin (my 7th cruise). My kids really do not like the smell of smoke and I do not care for it either, but I know Carnival allows smoking on the balconies. My question to smokers is, if our neighbors smoke on their balcony would it be rude of me to ask them when they usually smoke so I can make sure we are not out on our balcony when they smoke? I understand they have every right to smoke on their balcony whenever they want. I know a lot of non smokers complain about neighbors who smoke on their balconies, but I rarely hear them say they actually talked to their neighbors. To me complaining behind their backs is not going to help at all. I am not asking for peoples opinions about whether smoking should be allowed. I am not a smoker but your question is just rude. If the smoke bothers you then leave the balcony when you smell smoke.
