Tipping your room steward on the first day?

I was just wondering what is a good tip amount for the first day for the week. I was thinking like 100.00 dollars?
Is this in addition to the automatic gratuties that the cruise line deducts? I always give the steward $10 the first day and $5 a couple of times during the week and let him know this is extra. One time when I was on my way to the casino (I only bring $20 cash with me) I saw the steward and gave him what I thought was a 5 but when I got to the casino I realized I gave him my 20. That was a short casino session.

I can see giving him a little extra like a 20 or so to entice, but what exactally are you tipping more than that for if he hasnt done anything yet. I'd like to make sure ther service was adequate before I THROW MY MONEY AWAY.

First 6 cruises we always gave a tip on the first day. Then, more on the last day. This last cruise we did not tip at first, just at the end.

We got just as good of service this last time as any other time.

Guess it is up to the individual to give the tip when they want to.

Why pre-tip? We've always got amazing service without pre-tipping. Of course, we make sure that we treat our stewards in the manner that we would like to be treated if we were the ones doing their job...with respect and consideration for what they do. And then at the end, we've always left a nice tip and note of appreciation in the envelopes we bring.

Only once did I get less than what I thought was service that exceeded my expectations when I tipped in advance. Maybe I'll post a question here via smartphone when I board next time with the cabin steward's name to get some quick opinions before tipping. ;)

I always give 20.00 the first day.The rest of the tip comes at the end of the cruise.100.00 right at the start I think is too much unless you are going to remove the automatic tip.

We also give $20 the first day - we know ahead of time all they do and all they will be doing and want them to know up front we appreciate them! :)

It's a controversial thing. Some people say crew members are insulted that you think you have to pay them money to get good service, others tip up front and think that insures good service.

I prefer to tip at the end, just as I would at a restaurant.

No.

What it suggests is that you want to be treated special, something that the staff is trained not to do. I expect to receive the same great service as someone bribing the staff. If I ask for the room steward to do something extra for me, I would thank him with a tip. There are the gratuities suggested by Carnival. And if the service has been as good as I have seen in the past, I usually tip a bit more at the end to thank the staff.

Do you understand what a tip is?? It is a service provided to you that went above and beyond. Not there normal duties but something they did extra for you. Tipping before they did anything makes no sense. That is a charitable donation not a tip. Please if you feel bad for them then donate to them but that is NOT A TIP!!

Why would saying someone wanted to tip $100 be a troll? Maybe they're in the owner's suite. If someone paid a couple thousand for a hotel room for a week I wouldn't be surprised to see them slip the bellman $100.

We do the same thing. $20 on top of the autotipping.
