I asked this question of our travel agent after I organized several private tours in SE Asia. On a previous cruise , our TA accompanied us and always had an envelope for the guide and the driver. Her advice: Tip is not required but is much appreciated. Remember the guides and drivers need it to earn their living. 7-10 % for the guide and 3-5% for the driver are reasonable amounts. She felt it important to tip the driver separately. Remember your life is literally in his or her hands. The drivers we had in Vietnam and China were truly remarkably skilled.It is easier if ne person tips for the group based on the total cost. The groups I organized, from 6 to 12 people, were all happy with this arrangement. Be sure to clarify the arrangement with your group in advance. dino2067 Posted March 19, 2011 #5 Share Posted March 19, 2011 Last year we setup tours in Egypt, Jordan and Oman through an American based company that specializes in tours of the Middle East. Their recommendation for tips for guides and drivers - $5 for the drivers and $10 for the guides (or $ equivalent in local currency), per person, per day.
