Aside from car rental, can anybody suggest the most affordable way to get to Rum Point??

The only two feasible ways to get to Rum Point are a rental car or an excursion that includes a stop there. The excursion will be likely more expensive in total than a rental car, especially if you've got a larger group.

 

There are no buses to Rum Point. A taxi would cost about $80 US each way for a party of 2-3 people, and you would need to prearrange the return trip as no taxis would be available in the area.
