What's the best way to transfer from Civitavecchia to Fiumicino Airport?

As the title says really

We're pretty confident about getting to the port on departure date as we are in Rome for some days before hand, but I'm just wondering, what's the best way to get to the airport on arrival back in Rome?

Will there be a rank of Taxi's avaialble? Or can we rely on trains? Or should we pre-book?

BTW our flight is in the late afternoon, so we're not in a massive rush.

Best is a subjective word, without knowing your priorities (cost, ease, speed), how can we answer that for you?

There are literally dozens of threads with this exact same question, many of them only weeks old; a quick look through the first couple of pages of the board or use of the search function will turn them up.

Your primary choices are car service, taxi, shared car service/can, rental car, cruise line transfer, and train. There is a public bus option, but it is rather convoluted and requires two changes.

Most lines will force you off by 10 AM; with a late afternoon flight, you have plenty of time to get to the airport. If you can handle your luggage up and down two flights of stairs at Civitavecchia, I'd take the train.

Just got back from a 13 day cruise on Mariner of the Seas to Eastern Med: Civitiavecchia, Chania, Rhodes, Ashod, Haifa, Kusadasi, Athens, Palermo, Naples, Civitavecchia. We took the trains both from and to the airport to Civitavecchia. We are early 60's couple and pack lightly, taking advantage of the mid cruise laundry special. Because of this we don't have a lot of trouble getting bags on and off the train. On the final day of the cruise, the ship docked around 5 AM and we left carrying our own bags at 6:40 (before the ship had announced port clearance) and took one of the first buses from the ship to the port entrance (long lines later for this bus, but we were off immediately). We then walked the 500 yards along the waterfront (right at the port entrance) to the Civitavecchia train. We took the 0733 train to Rome Trastevere, connecting to Fiumicino Airport. The train was packed with commuters, but we saw some cruisers with lots of luggage jam themselves on the train. Total cost for both of us: 24.20 Euros, about $34, vs. almost $200 for a taxi or transfer from the ship for a couple. We arrived at Terminal three of FCO in less than two hours, beating everyone who had a ship transfer (because these were buses with set departure times) The only hitch was that our American Airlines flight left out of terminal 5, and we had long lines there to check in (over two hours). Our flight departed at 12:55 pm and we had plenty of time to make it.

The best way? Charter helicopter.. stopping at Lamole for lunch. If, for some reason, Stave Jobs didn't lave you enough money to do that ... If you decide to take the train, there are no reservations for the regional trains. (keeneye's routing is via regional trains, so no advantage to buying in advance. Alternatively, you could take the train to Termini which has a left luggage service and spend some time in Rome and then head to FCO on the Leonardo Express train. (Not sure what 'late afternoon" means, so don't know if you really have time to do this. ) I disagree with the suggestion that taking the ship's bus is the least stressful. Being dropped off at the wrong terminal is a PITA (Murphy's Law: you will ALWAYS be dropped at the wrong terminal), you have to wait for the bus to fill up and (Murphy again) the only seats available will be next to the couple you dislike the most -- you know, the ones who are going to tell you for the ninth time about their alien abduction. A prearranged private car is going to be most stress free .. and probably not much more, if at all, than the ship's bus.
