Upgrade offer May 16th Marina sailing

Is this usual when the ship appears to be not sold out? We were offered a PH, but figured that we did not want to pay that much extra. Is it really worth it?

Upgrade offers all depend on where the demand is for staterooms, which naturally varies constantly. So you just got lucky. :D

The Penthouses on the Marina are amazing! You won't believe the sense of space. If you can swing it, treat yourself ;)

depends on the upsell rate they offered you and from what Cat you are going from

You get extra amenities in the PH and they are nice it is all about your personal preferences

I'd jump at the offer. PH on the Marina is wonderful. We were glad to have spent more and would do it again in a heartbeat

It all depends on the price...

$100 to jump from Concierge to PH, jump on it...

$3,000...Leave it alone...

Only you can decide what it's worth to you...

I'm guessing it's more than "free" and less than the scheduled price difference between categories...

Also consider how much location on the ship meant to you when booking and where the new cabin is...

And it may be "negotiable"...Work through your TA...

What deals they are willing to make really has a lot to do with how many cabins are still available at each category...

We were offered an upgrade from an A-1 to a PH-1 on Marina's Pearls of the Riveria about six weeks before the cruise---we took it and were extremely pleased that we did. We never felt crowded, and that walk-in closet alone was worth the price (and tons of drawer space...never did fill 1/2 of them), not to mention Anthony, who was fabulous. The shower was plenty big for us, and there was never an issue with feeling cramped anywhere in the room or bathroom.

While on board, we booked a TA on Marina for next year...was able to book the same PH-1 (which proved to have a GREAT location on the ship). Looking forward to enjoying it all again.

Does anyone have a sense of what the process/logic is as to who is offered an upgrade? No reason other than idle curiosity.

If there are GTY's or waitlists for your cabin CAT then they will try to move you up or down from that CAT so they can clear the lists

I am sure someone will have a longer explanation but that is the gist of it ;)

The two other couples we met on our cruise who were offered upgrades were new to Oceania, as were we. Maybe part of Oceania's logic is to get you hooked on the upgrade category of cabin.

It is usually not a pure upgrade, but an "upsell"...An upgrade would be where they simply move you, at no additional cost, to a higher category cabin...

An "Upsell" is where they OFFER you the higher category cabin at an incremental cost above your lower category cabin...

Oceania, from my experience, will do this IF the cruise is getting closer and that higher category isn't selling as expected. You don't want to be left dumping high price cabins at the last minute for very low prices...especially when others on the ship have paid more for a lower category.

So, let's say PHs aren't selling well and you have 8 or 9 left and it's likely they won't sell, but your Concierge and Veranda cabins are sold out or close to sold out...Rather than hoping that enough PH customers show up last minute...or than dumping the PHs at an inside cabin price...Oceania will offer these first to, say, the folks already booked in a Concierge class...

Let's say the original price differential between a Concierge and a PH was $2,000 per cabin...they may, depending on laws of supply and demand, offer these to the Concierge customers for an additional $1,000...figuring someone who may have debated and thought $2,000 extra was too steep a premium to go from a concierge to a PH might jump at just another $1,000...

You start making those offers...either starting with customers by date of booking or, perhaps, going to customers of favored TAs first...Out of all the Concierge guests, the feeling is that you can fill those 8 or 9 with upsells and that frees up some sold out cabins in a lower category--which may be easier to sell out iin the general market...If not, you can start offering Veranda to Concierge upsells to your existing Veranda guests...and so on...

In the end, you have moved people up to higher categories, freeing up the easier to sell (theoretically) lower categories...and you've made some money doing it...not as much as originally scheduled for a quick sell-out, but more than you had...

Now, if you have to unload cabins, they will be the lowest categories...And you can offer some inside deals at low prices to, say your own employees and their families or to TAs or the travel industry (who get special deals)...and, for those deals, those people can't get too picky...

If you CAN'T move those upsells at that $1,000 premium, then you take a stab at $750...At some point, it's negotiable...

Of course, if the cruise sells well...or if the higher categories fill first, then those upsells never materialize...
