So many reviews have been written that it makes me wonder if I can add anything worthwhile in a new review. I can only hope that at least one person reads this and gains some useful information. My review is aimed at the relatively informed cruiser who’s looking for some more depth; perhaps information specific to the Liberty or Carnival but I’ll be flattered if anyone takes the time to read. What my review hopefully is not is a journal of my vacation. The intention is to provide information for people about the Liberty, Carnival and the various ports of call, etc. I think simply recounting what I did each day will probably be about as boring as when someone wants you to look at 450 photos of their baby (as cute as that baby may be).

One disclaimer – I have objective information and subjective views in this review. I am simply not interested in being challenged on my opinions. My views are mine and mine only. You are welcome to yours, of course, but please do not tell me that mine are wrong. On the other hand, if I get a fact wrong, please tell me as much.

A note on photos… I’ve included links to a few specific photos in this review. Once I have the full set-up I’ll post with the link. I’ll also have a video compiled at some point by that will take me several weeks to put together.

*****

It had been two years almost to the day since I cruised. The last cruise was with Carnival and on the Liberty with the same itinerary. I had hoped for the Eastern route this time but work and school schedules did not allow. I think we have most of the Spring Breaks over by 4/23 and I didn’t notice any more ‘younger’ folks than my previous four cruises.

BOOKING

I booked this one relatively close to the sailing date and full payment was already due. I reserved a Junior Suite (the old Cat 11) via my PVP. As we know, the upsell/upgrade calls are pure luck. Sure enough I got a call on 3/10 from Carnival offering an upsell. It WAS a good deal and I took it. I was very happy as I was going to change to a GS regardless. I was just playing the waiting game and they were not selling fast. During the call the agent did reference my past cruises. I have no clue if that factors in to the deal or call in any way – probably not.

PRE-CRUISE

As is becoming routine, we stayed at the Miami InterContinental the night before and after the cruise. This is a nice, albeit slightly over-priced hotel but the location is killer with views over the port if you request it and just a five minute cab ride to the pier (and $23/$24 from the airport). There are tricks to getting a good rate at this hotel via those budget Website sites but I can’t be bothered with all that. I did get reasonable rates and also opted at reservation time to take upgrades if available. For a $99 upcharge we got an Executive Suite on the top floor with all the related benefits such as happy hour drinks in the lounge, etc. I wouldn’t pay the full price for those rooms as I equate it to First Class plane tickets – you don’t get your money’s worth at full price, but for what I ended up paying it was fantastic.

My one beef with the IC is that their room stewards seem incapable of cleaning bathrooms properly. I had issues this time and last. But the convenience of the hotel to the port and Bayside makes it my hotel of choice for Miami cruises.

We had Mojitos in the afternoon at the Latin American Bayside Café – a favorite of mine. Good service and we caught happy hour, LOL.

On Friday night we dined with friends at Versailles Restaurant on 3555 Southwest 8th St in Miami (http://www.versaillescuban.com/). Excellent Cuban food but be warned, the menu has no English. After that we partied at Tobacco Road (626 South Miami Av, http://www.tobacco-road.com/index.php), supposedly Miami’s oldest bar. There we enjoyed a great local blue band.

EMBARKATION

We arrived at the pier about 10:45am on Saturday. Security took about 10 minutes to get through. I did have one carry on opened. It was full of soda and a bottle of Champagne. They shook the tonic water I had to make sure it was soda and not liquor and sent us on our way. The VIP lounge was already bustling and we got checked-in in about five minutes. We were welcomed back with a smile. I’ve never seen this published but the Carnival rep told us that normal boarding for VIP was about 11:15am. We did have to wait until 11:40am to board as the ship was getting an impromptu inspection.

I would guess we were among the first 50 passengers on board. We were actually second in line but there was a wedding party getting on before the VIP line and once our line got to the ship we were split in two and two lines were formed.

We headed right for the Lido where we were greeted immediately by a waiter and low and behold it was someone I was told to look out for as he had become friends with and looked after some friends of mine. We were his first customers that day, a nice surprise indeed.

Despite the earlier inspection our room was ready at 1:30pm as scheduled. Good job Carnival.

BAGGAGE

I have traveled quite a bit for pleasure and business and have been fortunate never to have had bags lost or even delayed. So my time had to come at some point. We’ve always been lucky with bags on the boat getting them early; this time not so much. Eventually later in the afternoon two of our three checked bags could be seen in the crates near the elevators mid-ship. The third was outside our cabin door already. The second eventually showed-up at our room but the third didn’t. We had seen it there on the crates but it disappeared. I wish now I had fought like the impatient passengers had and dragged the bag off the crates but I could see how much disruption they were causing and decided I would be patient.

By 8:00pm I discussed the situation with Guest Services. They told me nothing could be done until 8:30pm. By 9:00pm my bag was still missing. I was upset at this point as ninety percent of my clothes were missing. I had roamed the halls several times. My bag was clearly labeled and it had very unique ribbon and labels to indicate to others they have the wrong bag should they get it by mistake. Carnival’s procedure is to advise all cabin stewards and as they clean rooms they are allowed to look for the bag. Until they clean, they cannot go in the rooms to look.

My room steward brought my bag to me at 9:30am the next morning. It had been delivered to the wrong room at the other end of the ship. The passenger(s) in that room had taken the bag in to their cabin and just left it there rather than leaving it in the hallway or taking it to the correct room or bothering to tell anyone. Carnival suggested that perhaps the guests in that room where in a group and maybe thought it belonged to a roomy that they didn’t know. Who knows but the bag labeled for my room was in theirs overnight. But the problem started with the porters taking my bag to the wrong part of the ship (not even close to my room).

It all ended well, including me apologizing several times to Guest Services for losing my temper that night. My concern was someone had opened my bag and decided they liked the contents so I wanted a search done right away. I also asked to speak with the Hotel Director but that is not allowed either until they have been through the routine of room searches. In retrospect, what I was demanding was unreasonable and I made that clear in my apology. I had just become very upset as I had spent weeks buying new clothes for the trip and now they were all gone. I had visions of apologizing over and over again as I ate in the steakhouse and attended the Chef’s Table in shorts and the same t-shirt all week long although Guest Services did say they would let me get some shirts from the gift shop if necessary. The lady responsible for baggage clearance in Guest Services was outstanding and even called out to me to ask me how I was doing when she saw me elsewhere on the ship later in the week.

FOOD – MAIN DINING ROOM

I vowed never to eat in the MDR again after the last trip but I had probably been unfair as I had not given it enough chance. As readers of my posts may know, I prefer to eat in the steakhouse when possible. On a seven night trip I may eat once in the MDR for dinner and it’s usually the first night. The last cruise experience was horrible. I’ll say no more – the details are in the review in my signature below. This trip was better in some respects though.

Our MDR dinner waiter was prompt and we were not left waiting ages for food. The drinks waiter actually arrived quickly and came back later to check on us. We found the food to be reasonably good but still a little bland and unexciting.

We dined three times in the MDR for breakfast this cruise and enjoyed each time. The service was quite prompt and they had a guy with a cart one morning for making breakfast drinks like Bloody Mary’s and Mimosas. The last morning we did this though I think our waiter was hungover or something and he smelled bad (bad personal hygiene). He was a little rude and we seemed to be bothering him.

Truthfully, I don’t eat in the MDR enough to really know what it’s like overall. I can only draw from the two times (for dinner) in the last two trips and maybe two or three times the first cruise on Carnival. I’d rate it average from what I do know. The food is okay – often bland but sometimes there’s a surprise in there , not always hot, sometimes the waiters are terribly slow (obviously overworked from cutbacks) and the general noise and apparent chaos in the room during dinner time is only a notch above cafeteria. I’m still only prepared to eat one night in there, preferring to take in the steakhouse most other nights with a couple of nights casual for trying out snack options like pizza, buffet, etc and just taking a break from the sheer volume of food.

Sorry, no food photos from the MDR. But I have photos of everything we enjoyed in the steakhouse and the Chef’s Table. Read on.

FOOD – BUFFET/FISH & CHIPS/SUSHI/PIZZA/ROOM SERVICE

Buffet lines were the usual cat fight. I ate one dinner from the buffet late one night and had a mixture of fish and Chicken Parmesan and it wasn’t bad. It was hot although it had just been put out. The rest of the buffest food is nothing to write home about – cold cuts, fruit, cheap cheese, potato salad, pasta… you know the deal – nothing bad really, just mediocre. However, I am resigned to the fact the buffet is like standing in line at middle school only the school kids often have more manners. Again fellow passengers, please don’t shove me, take tongs from my hands, yell in my ear, point at the food on my plate or push in line without so much of an ‘excuse me.’ Yelling across the dining area is not appropriate either. Manners are free are they not? There’s no upcharge for them. Please feel free to use them at will.

I tried the Sushi. Actually it wasn’t bad. Not much to say about it.

The fish and chips were the usual greasy goodness. I don’t quite get the oohs and ahhs over it (and I’m British, maybe that’s the problem) but it is good. Then again, I don’t understand the gushing over the Warm Chocolate Melting Cake either so obviously I’m odd.

I did not try the Mongolian this time. The lines were just too long and slow.

We had the pizza several times and honestly, it was very good. Service is slow though and be prepared to remind the teenagers who swarm around there what line etiquette is.

We ordered the New York Strip and Brie from room service. I used to love this menu item but it was so smothered in mustard it was inedible.

Lido coffee was just about drinkable if you are desperate – nothing new there, LOL.

FOOD – STEAKHOUSE

$30 per person, gratuity included.

Well, good news campers… Harry’s was much better than two years ago. If you read my previous review I was very unhappy about the goings on in there. The food and service was great but they let some things slide that bothered me. For the most part it was run much better this time. And my word it was busy all three nights I was in there. It was very pleasing to see the place get so much patronage. I did see flip flops (on guys) again but none of the inappropriate behavior from before.

The food continues to impress me although the menu had barely changed from two years ago. The service is impeccable (no less than five people attending to us each meal). We had two new servers help us the first night. Each time a senior person asked us how they were doing. I could see they were trying very hard and they got extra tips as a result. I learned that many, if not all the steakhouse service work ONLY in the steakhouse. I thought that was interesting.

Not only is the food leagues above the MDR (I know many think otherwise but that’s my opinion), the steakhouse is a complete dining experience. The ambience, service attention, wine list and food make for a terrific evening for those that appreciate that kind of thing.

I have photos of most of the food we ordered here: http://www.pbase.com/nezmo/steakhouse.

FOOD – CHEF’s TABLE

$75 per person, gratuity included.

I had high expectations of the Chef’s Table based on things I had read. I was not disappointed.

I booked the table before the cruise by emailing the Liberty steakhouse. I got a response within an hour using this method. I hear anecdotes that Carnival prefers you go via John Heald but that is a convoluted method and just adds a middle man, sometimes resulting in long delays to get a response.

We met at the atrium bar at 6:30pm where we had a few tables reserved for us. We were greeted by an officer and then the Head Chef, Frank Fernandes. Frank explained there would be two parts to our evening; a tour of the galley with champagne and hors hors d'œuvres and then the main meal in a private dining room. He then escorted us to the galley. We gathered around the salad preparation area where we had several hors d'œuvres and the champagne. We then moved to the entrée preparation area. Here we were shown how the main meals are prepared. Warning, it is very hot here. I had a suit on and the jacket had to come off and even then I was uncomfortable. From there we visited the dessert area where one guest got to make the Warm Chocolate Melting Cake. I have done a galley tour before but it was between lunch and dinner and there wasn’t much going on. Seeing the galley in full swing with wait staff lined-up for plates and food cooking was a treat.

From the galley we went to the Persian Room off the mid-ship MDR. There were ten of us (maximum of twelve for the Chef’s Table). Our place settings were personalized with name tags and a scroll menu. Here we were served the meal with red and white wine flowing all through the meal. I think the wines were mid-tier. Each course was prepared in the room on another table by several chefs including Frank. Frank explained each course in detail as it was served.

Frank also explained that Prime beef is served in the steakhouse and at the Chef’s Table, Choice is served in the MDR and Select is used for carvings in the buffet.

I honestly think the food I had at the Chef’s Table is the best I have ever tasted. The combinations of flavors show this food came from someone with extensive experience and excellent training.

All the staff at this event were outstanding. All smiles and they truly looked like they were enjoying their roll. I tipped extra as a result.

I have photos of every course and the preparation. Photos in galley are prohibited though. See here: http://www.pbase.com/nezmo/chefs_table.

CABIN/STEWARD

Our steward was attentive and polite, greeted us by name (as they are required to), kept our room very clean and was in and out without ever disturbing us. He didn’t have the mat on the bed laid for the luggage and one night we had to request a door hanger for ordering breakfast room service but those are nits in my mind.

The very thoughtful guests in the room prior to us had “locked” the safe with the door before they left. Our steward needed his supervisor to unlock it for us. We made the issue known right before muster drill so we had to wait but no more than ten minutes after the drill ended the supervisor arrived and fixed the problem.

Our balcony neighbors were generally quiet other than the first day when I swear one side rearranged the chairs 6 times (how many different ways can you arrange the chairs and table?). The last time he did it he threw one of the chairs and it hit the divider! Anyway, after that all was quiet. We tried to be good neighbors and hope the others felt we succeeded.

We noticed that our cabin door (not the balcony door) sometimes needed a little extra tug to ensure it was latched closed. I recommend you watch out for this.

CRUISE DIRECTOR

Jen Baxter is an interesting character. I personally feel she sounds like she is running a holiday camp back in the UK – the kind where people stay in chalets and the entertainment is bingo, ballroom dancers and talent shows (anyone ever seen the old British sitcom Hi-De-Hi?). She makes way too many announcements and she’s very loud. She’s the first CD to really get on my nerves to be honest. At first glance she came across as a bit of a clown – we could only laugh at that thought as later in the cruise we saw her wearing clown socks on the Lido late night deck party.

LIDO

Usual issue with single flip flops and towels holding chairs for hours on end – nothing new there of course. We prefer the aft pool anyway which is adult only but same issue with chairs. We managed to find chairs if we hunted a bit. Drink service was prompt, in fact the service was extremely attentive (of course, CCL makes its money on booze ).

The late night deck party on the Lido was fun if a bit formulaic.

ENTERTAINMENT

I’ve been critical of this aspect of Carnival cruising. I still think they have cut back on many things and they don’t switch the shows often enough (I didn’t bother to watch any shows this cruise). However, I was pleasantly surprised at the music on board this time.

LIDO – still no full calypso band obviously but the duo Kool Runningz did a good job playing Caribbean-flavored versions of not only the requisite Marley stuff but also other pop standards. It didn’t seem repetitive and they had a good vibe.

PIANO BAR – Brad Alexander deserves good praise. He is not Joel/Elton John jaded and likes to play their stuff (rather than rolling his eyes when you request like many piano bar players do). He has a large repertoire with some surprising songs on the list. He handles a crowd well and has a great late night show after midnight if he thinks the audience is up for it. I found Brad responsive and very interactive.

The full variety band (I think they’re called Music Network) were actually pretty good. I saw them play on the Lido, in the Jazz Club and at the casino. Lively, tight, good guitar work, and good vocals shared by the band.

Paul was the one-man band who seemed to mainly play in the casino. He did reasonably well playing all sorts of pop and rock stuff with backing tracks.

I can’t comment on the Mambo Kings who played the Latin music in the atrium mainly as I didn’t really pay attention to them.

Finally, the magician came to the Chef’s Table. Magic is really not my bag but I have to say it was entertaining. He did slight-of-hand tricks right under my face and I was stunned. He was funny, not too cheesy and very skilled.

PORTS – COZUMEL

We didn’t do any excursions here but grabbed a taxi to downtown ($7 total from Puerta Maya) and did a little shopping. We ate at Casa Denis which is reputedly the oldest restaurant in Cozumel. Kick butt margaritas and great food – and very cheap. We had two large drinks and lunch for about US$23.

After downtown we hit Paradise Beach (about $18 for a taxi from Puerta Maya). It’s just $2 per person for use of lounger and the facilities such as toilets and showers. They have added a fresh water pool and another bar and they have reasonably priced drinks. You can rent jet skis here and for $12 you get the use of the large water floaties out in the sea.

PORTS – GRAND CAYMAN

I had an excursion booked with Captain Marvin’s to swim with the stingrays again. This is a very friendly and reliable company. They had tried to call me (but called my home number) to ask if we could take an earlier trip as we would be the only ones on ours. I didn’t get that message until I got home but they were glad to take us out on our original time. Unfortunately, half way out to the stingrays we had to cancel as jellyfish were swarming and had stung several people already. Captain Marvin’s were very apologetic and gave us a refund without any hassle. On the drive back the driver gave us some hints for other things we could do along Seven Mile Beach.

Note, Senor Frogs is now closed on Grand Cayman.

PORTS – OCHO RIO

I pre-booked an all-inclusive day pass for Sunset Beach via “Jamaica For a Day” (http://www.jamaicaforaday.com/). I chose the option without transportation as I had read that could be unreliable. It’s a ten minute ride by taxi at $4 per person from the pier. We hopped on a group taxi/bus handling several tours and it was painless.

Sunset Beach is clean, free from locals touting business, fairly quiet and well equipped. We did a small catamaran, floating donuts, they had Jet Skis (for a charge), cool water slides, many clean pools and bars. We had lunch (burgers and hot dogs although there were other more elaborate options) and plenty of drinks all included. No one expected tips (it always cracked me up at Margaritaville in Montego Bay when the attendant at the top of the water slide wanted a tip each time).

CASINO

I’m not a gambler but I usually take $20 and see how fast I can blow it on the slots. We played for a little while and won $78 so cashed out and left. We did try another $10 or $20 (can’t remember exactly) another night and blew it real fast so we felt better then, lol. The only comments I can add of any significance regarding the casino is the cashiers appear to have their personalities stripped during Carnival training, LOL. Maybe that’s the nature of the beast for those handling money. Also, the casino area did not seem as smoky as it has in the past. I noticed that they had no smoking signs on one side of the bar and they enforced it.

DISEMBARKING

We got our “1” luggage tags (it’s commonly refuted on Cruise Critic but suite guests are given the option for priority disembarkation). While the bags were labeled for early disembarkation we chose to take it easy and grabbed breakfast on the Lido (first time that week we had used the Lido for breakfast). I think we got off the ship about 9:45am. Customs was a breeze. Took all of two minutes but we got lucky as a line opened-up as we approached. My guess is the other lines may have taken 15 minutes to get through. The Customs official was pleasant and joked with us.

We did have to wait about 20 minutes for a taxi back to the InterContinental as the line was long.

POST CRUISE

We ate at Mambo at Bayside Saturday night. Their fried Yuca and alligator fajitas are outstanding. Service had been slow here two years ago. This time it was spot on.

I received the Carnival survey (many say they don’t get this) just two days after my cruise ended. I promptly completed it and apparently doing so enters you in to a draw for a free cruise awarded once per month.

CONCLUSION

Liberty looks as fresh as she did two years ago. She was clean, in good shape and still feels current. Only a couple of minor issues here and there. The party lights on one side of the Lido were out and I noticed some carpet and paint issues but she goes in later in the year for a freshen-up.

Food was excellent if you go for the upcharge stuff otherwise I found it mediocre to good.

Service was excellent.

I will cruise Carnival again because they do offer value for money at a certain level but I am going to start looking at other lines because I feel Carnival is getting stale, mainly because not much changes on the menus and entertainment. I’m ready for better food overall, better entertainment, and better suite accommodations.

Good review. And its true what you said it is your opinion.:) I love the Liberty this Dec will be my third time on her, but a different itinerary. Thanks for the advice about the steakhouse. i've never done that on any of my cruises. I may give it a try this time. Always room for something new.

Nezmo,

The other shots are in my Fotki album. I had planned to walk down to Government Cut, but somehow I lost track of time and didn't make it. Funny how that happens after a relaxing cruise! Anyhow, Liberty pics start on Page 13 and full size files can be downloaded for free. Please try it out and let me know if there are any issues; I just switched from Webshots and I hope Fotki works well.

Great review, I was one of the people stung by a jellyfish on the early Capt. Marvin's tour, be glad you missed it!

Were you the guy who went to the hospital? I know a few were stung on our boat but that one guy was writhing in pain big time. I know he went to the hospital when we got back to the dock.

If that was you, you had folks praying for you.

Nezmo,

Good review I agree about many things including the food. Your review was the one I was wanting to read the most.

I as going to do a review but decided against it as I don't want to battle the culties who get offended at differing opinions.

Good review for a good cruise.

I felt it was well balanced and accurate. Glad to hear you came out ahead in the casino! :D

Working on mine this week - from our "VH1 Best Cruise Ever", which was an EXCELLENT experience that just happened to be on a Carnival ship!

Thanks of the great review. I am leaving in 2 days and going to 2 of the ports you visiting so great info! 1 question about Sunset Jamaica Grande...looking to do that but have seen terrible reviews on it so have been hesitant but it looks like you had a great time. Debating between that and the Bamboo Beach Club... was Jamacia Grande nice? I have read reviews about alcohol running out, dirty beach, etc??

As always Great Review!!!...

We dined in the steakhouse two times and thought those (kids) that were in training were trying very hard as well. We had the one little girl ask us on our 2nd visit if she could do the steak presentation for practice of course we allowed her. Our first night in the steakhouse was the 3rd night of the cruise and we were surprised that we were given a free bottle of wine I thought that was the first night only.

I think you'll read good and bad about them all. I read a bunch of reviews on different places then just made a judgement. Sunset was relatively quiet, maybe they get low on drinks when it's busy? I found the place clean, good water, lots of space and great view back to the ship. I have plenty of photos that I'll try to get posted later.

I'll take a look. I've been with PBASE for years but ask myself why. They have had response time issues for years.

Great review! We are planning on going to Harry's on our upcoming cruise, so I really enjoyed your perspective and pictures about that. I am trying to convince DH to go to the Chef's table, but we will see. Thanks for taking the time to write the review, it is much appreciated!

Excellent review Nezmo! Really enjoyed reading it. Thank you for taking the time to write this and share this.

As you know we have sailed Liberty 3X.

I highly recommend trying a spirit class ship next. I, like you enjoy Liberty so much but the Miracle opened up a whole new perspective as well as itinerary for us. Plus the "bang for the buck" on CCL is unbeatable! It's also very nice to be able to sail to the Southern (ports) Islands from Fort Lauderdale. I do have to say the port of FLL was the best we have ever experienced in our 11 cruises!

Thanks again for your review;)
