First time cruisers - 30 sept 2012 - freedom of the seas

Recommended Posts

Hi

Myslef, husband, son (12), daughter (10), mum and dad are all going on our first cruise. Really excited but a bit scary in case there are things we should know but don't and so miss out.

Questions!

Worried about what type of clothes our son should wear for dinner in the evenings - he's not really a suit person!

If we have dinner, do the kids go off to their clubs leaving the adults to go to a show or the casino? How safe are the kids?

How much are the drinks packages for the kids, if any and are they worth it?

Thanks

Your son definitely does NOT need a suit! Just some long pants for the dining room. There will be 2 "formal" nights, so your husband may want to bring a suit for those nights. But you will see folks dressed in everything from tuxes to shorts, tho' RCI requests no shorts in the dining room at dinner. Sorry, can't address your other questions. I believe the price of the soda package is on the RCI web site.

Freedom of the Seas is a fantastic ship. Your family will love it. My son wears khaki pants and a button-down short sleeve or polo shirt most nights. I do also, except on Formal Nights, when we each wear a navy blue blazer with tie or a suit (but that is not required). Think of "resort casual" as the ship's dinner dress code for the Main Dining Room.

My 13-year-old daughter wears sun dresses every evening. The Main Dining Rooms on Freedom are excellent but you can always dine at the Windjammer Cafe buffet as well, where shorts, sneakers and t-shirts are the norm.

Our family prefers the Main Dining Room -- you are seated instead of getting up and down for the buffet line and you may order as much as you care to eat but with great service. We always enjoy several different appetizers, entrees and desserts.

If you children enjoy soda, the beverage package is well worth it. In the Main Dining rooms and in theWindjammer Cafe, lemonade, flavored waters and iced tea are available at no charge even if you don't have a soda package.

The shows on the ship are wonderful and almost all of them are for the entire family. My kids loved them all -- the ice skating show, the musical shows etc. and this year they have added the 3-D movie theater and the Dreamworks character parade. We always do the shows and parades together but of course our kids can go to the kid's clubs.

The ship is extremely safe for children -- one of the best. Lots of supervised activities and a 1 a.m. curfew for anyone under 18. You will love it.
