Suggested rain gear for DSLR

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a Nikon D5000 and am heading to Alaska at the end of August. Rain gear has been highly suggested...

Recommendations???

I have the D5000.

Nice camera, once you get familiar with it.

When I first got my camera, I just purchased a few "rain coats" for mine off ebay. They worked great and covers your entire camera with pull strings for a tight fit so it won't slide off. They have different sizes (so that you can use it with telescoping lens).

I have the 18 - 55mm and 55 - 200mm lenses that are the one of the base packages for the D5000. I have a UV filter for the telephoto, and a UV/Circular Polarizer for the wide angle. As I understand it, my old "normal" polarizer would give moire patterns in the image???

I'll add a vote for the Storm Jacket. I have one and was able to shoot a football game in a torrential downpour (game should have been cancelled but wasn't) and the camera didn't even get damp!

Football isn't like that whimpy baseball. You play in rain, snow, sleet, everything short of a hurricane or tornadoes. I have been to a Buffalo Bills game where we had 6" of snow during the game... :D

This was just the freshman team and it was a huge storm that came through. There was a tornado watch and people were being advised that they may need to evacuate. Our coaches thought the other team was supposed to cancel (it was a home game) so no one cancelled and we played anyways. Yikes! They were soaked to the skin before the game even started. I ended up taking my rain coat off since it soaked through by halftime. The only thing that stayed dry was my camera. Thank goodness!!
