Looking at the option that RCi offer, bus to Rome and then explore on your own. Has anyone done this and where are you generally dropped off and picked up, want to try and plan the sight seeing in advance but need to guage what the starting point is - also any ideas of drop off/pick up times - any advice greatly appreciated

Hi

Just came back, and we did Rome on your Own, but with the train. It is slightly quicker than the bus and you get dropped of at Stazzione San Pietro just a stones throw from the vatican.

You have plenty time in Rome providing you are not touring round museums and the Vatican. We left at 8.15am cant quite remember when we were dropped of but before 10.00am we returned to the station for 4.30pm.

Be advised there is too much to see in one day, choose a few things of interest and visit these.

There is plenty of transport you can use to get around which would cut down on time. We chose to walk as we wanted to get a flavour of the city. Still managed to see most of the major sights including Outside Vatican, Castel San Angello, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain,Coloseum, Roman Forum and Capotiline Hill.

Got some great photos, and have an idea of what we want to revisit next time

We did the Rome on Your Own via the bus in 2009. We were dropped off/picked up at a very nice gift shop near St. Peters Square. There is a guide on the bus to help point you in the right direction and give you advice.

We did "Rome on your own" with RCI in 2004. Just checked my pictures and it looks like the first picture was taken at 10:30 and the last was at 4PM. We were back at the boat at 6PM. We did get dropped off right around the corner from St. Peters Square. We walked everywhere - to and through the Forum, past the Colosseum, over to the Pantheon, to the Trevi Fountain and then to the Vatican for a couple hours. Last thing we saw was St. Peter's Basilica. A great, long tiring day.

We had a fantastic private tour (8 People) with RomeinLimo. The day couldn't of been any better, what our driver/guide Stefano didn't know about Rome would fit on a postage stamp. We left at 7:45am, back at the ship by 5pm.

Try your roll call, see if you can get a group together.;)

We did Rome on your own with the bus last week and it worked well for us.

We arrived at the drop off exactly at 10:00 on the Via Della Conciliazione less than 1 block from St Peter's Square. We walked only a few steps toward the Vatican and there is a taxi stand on the right. The Pope was due in the square at 10:30 so to avoid the massive crowd we jumped in a cab and were at the coliseum by 10:25 am before the serious crowds showed up (10.50 Euros).

The return was 4:00 so we had a full 6 hours in Rome. We went inside the Coliseum (1/2 hour wait and 1 hour inside) and the Forum. Then basically wondered through the center of Rome back to the Vatican pick up location.
