We will be in Le Havre in November and are trying to find a car and driver/tour guide at a reasonable price. All of the ones I have found are outrageously expensive. Will be there for one long day. Any suggestions?

Hi, Barbie,

How many are you?

Yes the tours are expensive, but van tours for a group of say, 6 to 10 work out much much better p.p., and there's been recommendations on this site for

www.overlordtour.com

and

www.normandy-battlefields.org

Could you get together a group via your cruise's roll-call?

Or have you checked if anyone else is looking for sharers?

If you just want a car/driver, try

http://www.taxis-le-havre.com/

or (a different company) e-mail

patrick.spiess@tiscali.fr

Again, a car for four works out half as expensivre.

For car rental, suggestions on

The driving and navigation are pretty easy - mostly dual freeway, with country lanes around the D-Day sights.

From Le Havre, you should comfortably fit in Arromanches, Omaha/American cemetery, Pointe du Hoc and, if you've not eaten into a recommended minimum one hour to spare, on the way back you could drop into the pretty port of Honfleur, about 30 mins from your ship.

Lots of threads via the "search this thread" facility above your question, and on the Britain/Western Europe forum.

Happy huntin'

John Bull :)

John Bull is correct. Sharing a van with 6 others is the way to go. We recently used Overload tours who ran about 6 vans the day we were at LeHavre. At E100, that is about the best you will find unless you are brave enough to rent a car and drive to places you don't know. Stops were made at the Omaha Beach, Utah Beach, American cemetary, Pont du Hoc, and a few other quaint towns. We had lunch at a hotel/restaurant cafe (on your own$).

In ALL of the cruises we have ever done, I think we have only done 2 or 3 ship tours, but this one of them, as we could not find any reasonable alternative. It turned out to be an excellent tour, as we visited the D Day beaches, Point du Hoc, American cemetery, Museum at Caen, and had an included lunch. (Celebrity Century). We were very pleased, as our guide would give us a nice short presentation at each site, and then we were allowed to "wander" on our own through the area for 30 minutes, or so.
