Heads up on the laundry.

I did get a laugh out of this one. Go figure that on day 3 of a 5 day cruise I end up having to do laundry. Mainly because my 6 year old doesn't want to stop whatever's going on to go pee. I had to threaten that when we got to Cozumel I was going to take him to the airport and send him home. It worked and I love the age that they don't know the regulations. ;)

Anyway, what I thought was funny is that in the casino you have a slot for your sign and sail card where you can just charge your gambling money. But the laundry machines only take quarters. And there is no dollar changer. You have to go to the casino cage.

You can also get change at Guest Services.

I always end up doing a load or 2 every cruise. So whenever I'm strolling past guest services and there's no line, I go ahead and get a couple rolls of quarters to have at the ready.

Also helpful to pack a few Purex 3-in-1's instead of wasting money on those single use packets of detergents and softners (which require even more quarters!):D

Totally agree on the Purex sheets. For travel they're amazingly convenient. And you can pack a few in a ziplock and they take up absolutely no room.

I also stop at Guest Services for quarters. Next cruise I plan to try the Platinum laundry service, but I am sure I'll end up doing some of my own, too. So Purex 3-in-1's are going with me; I think they are awesome, but can't help wondering why they changed the name from "all-in-one".

Been using Purex 3 in one for the last three years It seems that we do a ave. of two washes per 7 day cruise once when we board (Thanks to pre cruise activites) and the 5th or 6th night.

Have fun with security by bringing our own roll or two of Quarters in our carry on, This gets security focus on the rolls and not the rum runners :DLast Dec on the Glory the security officer had two of the rum runners in his hand while looking and put them back in the bag.

Question about the laundry - Is it usually full midway or are there plenty of washing machines? How much does it cost to wash/dry?

Do you usually have to stay there the whole time or can you come back in a timely manner to switch out your clothes?

I may have been lucky but I never usually have to wait for a washing machine. I put my money in and leave, but I am very careful to come back in around 25-30 minutes to check to see how close it is to being finished.

A couple of times I have had to wait to get a dryer....one time I waited 45 minutes, then I decided to put the persons's clothes on the table. It was only towels, trunks, and a swim suit. I did check to make sure there was nothing needed hanging. I would have folded it and put it on top.

When I came back to check on my dryer, the person walked in and was very apologetic.

Seriously, some of my nicest, brief encounters have been in the laundry room--I've seen people offer others a quarter or two, laundry detergent, information about excursions, etc. To me it just reinforces how nice people are.

our local laudromat doesn't allow the 3-in-1's because they say it does something to their drainage system. I'm surprised that, on a ship, they don't have strict rules on types of detergents and stuff.

That's interesting. The one and only time we tried to do laundry onboard the guy hogging the dryer (with his wet clothing and no money plugged into it, almost 2 hours later) tried to start a fist-fight with my husband. Then he left, we started the dryer, came back to check on it and the ahole had returned, but our clothing on top of the dryer and was currently using OUR money to dry HIS clothing. Never again. I budget $15 x 3 or 4 loads to send out in the laundry bags on the days they have specials.

Similarly to Allison's reply, here's a link to interactive Carnival deck plans that also feature other interesting tidbits besides where the launderettes are, such as the location of the ATM, Loyalty and Cruise Vacation kiosk, etc.:

That's terrible. Your DH looks pretty big, he could have taken him - lol.

The machines are pretty small, and for us we had to spend $6 dollars to get one load dried. That's $9 for one small load, plus you waste your time waiting for the machines to finish. Our friends used the laundry service - $15 special for a large laundry bag. They were able to fit about 2 loads into that one laundry bag and no waiting around.

Next cruise, we are also going with the laundry service - less hassle and can actually be cheaper if you have lots of laundry.

.....when I had to do laundry during the cruise. Now I just stuff it in a bag and leave it for the steward to take from me for my free laundry service.

Out of any Platinum perk this by far is my favorite.

As far as better times to go, I always had luck early morning/late at night.

:)

(sorry OP, just had to brag a little)

It's totally worth it, to me. And if you roll your items tightly, I can get 2 bags back folded from what I send out in 1 bag rolled. DH probably could have taken him. I wanted to take my sharpie and write nasty things all over their clothing while it was in the dryer.

And that is why if I ever do laundry in a public laundry room, I am there throughout the cycle (learned this lesson the hard way in from living in college dorms :))

See, what *I* learned in college dorms was do what you want but if you're not there when your stuff is done, then it's customary for the person waiting for the dryer sets it on top. I hadn't ever encountered the "leave wet clothing in the dryer for 2 hours" scenario, lol.
