Humping it on the Freedom of the Seas

Recommended Posts

School me about the hump cabins on Freedom of the Seas. I gather that hump cabins are "desirable", but I'm not exactly sure WHY? Are they bigger inside? Bigger balcony? Or is it more about being close to that mid-ship elevator/stairwell core?

What categories of balcony cabins are on the hump? It looks like they are "E2". That leads to a related question. When comparing categories, I think a letter closer to A is "better". or at least, priced higher. I.e. a D is better than and E. What about within a category? Is a lower number "better"? or is a higher number better?

I realize this is probably small potatoes. But I am just curious, as I am in the position where I need to decide what category cabin to book for a cruise on Freedom.

I am in a cabin mid-hump in December. I am told that it is not any bigger than other cabins in that category, E1. It is actually the cheapest balcony cabin except for a guarantee. There are 2 advantages to these cabins. One, they are near the elevators and are convenient to most places on the ship. Two, the center of the hump especially has a view down both sides of the ship and below. On FOS, the hump is created by moving the hallway out so that the cabins are not bigger. I understand on some ships they may be larger.

I am looking forward to the view!

Interesting. When looking at the deck plans, I noticed they seemed to be a "lesser" category. I wasn't sure if I was reading the plan correctly, though. All of those colors, with so many being slightly different shades of a given color makes my head hurt.

Since it seemed to be a "lesser" category, I wasn't sure why I saw a lot of hype over the hump cabins on various ships. As far as location near the elevator. Nice, but not a huge deal.. The view part seems interesting, though. Seems like the ship itself doesn't get in the way if I look down the ship (towards the aft or bow). And I presume a clean, unobstructed view downward to the water (no deck, no lifeboat, etc.)

It's the Radiance class ships that have deeper balconies on either end of the "hump"....Voyager and Freedom class do not have the deeper balconies.

It's the convenient location that makes the hump area desirable.....that's about it!

Also the D-1's on the hump on deck 9 have bigger rooms (214 sq ft) smaller balconies (68 sq ft) vs the E-1's on 6, 7 & 8 room (177 sq ft) & balcony (74 sq ft)! I prefer the bigger room and smaller balcony. But I love the hump after my last cruise on the Srerenade!

Hi,

These long Mega-Ships have a serious design flaw...only 2 elevator cores!

The Hump Cabins (my RCI VP called them Cabins-on-the-Curve) mitigate

this flaw somewhat by their location near the aft elevators.

Yeah.. I noticed that when I was looking at deck plans for FoS. I sailed on the NCL Star. A ship that is a lot smaller (but by no means tiny) and it had three elevator/stairwell cores. Forward, midship, and aft. Though IIRC, the aft one might not have gone to all the decks the fore and midship ones did.

But I am not too worried about longer walks to elevators. I am used to hoofing it around huge casino hotels in Las Vegas.

I asked the CVP why these cabins are not more expensive. I was told they are very popular, but that some people do not want to be near the elevators. On Freedom, they are not larger, but the view is supposed to be great. We will see in December.
