USS Iowa is coming to San Pedro

The Navy has selected San Pedro as the new home for the USS Iowa. She will be at Berth 87 adjacent to the Princess Cruise Port. Sailing from San Pedro, she will be at the starboard side of the ship on sail out.

She will not be in San Pedro until December / January according to the article. She is a US Battleship.

She will make for a very interesting pre- or post-cruise excursion for cruisers once she arrives and gets spruced up for tourists. It will be fun to compare stateroom space to hot racks....bet those tiny cabins start to look positively enormous.

Wow... great news. The Iowa was the first of the Iowa-class battleships.

And it's a sad story for us up in the SF bay area. A group of volunteers has been working for 5+ years on preparing for her to berth on Mare Island as a museum along with hotels, restaurants, etc., and then all of a sudden the Navy decided to change their minds and move to San Pedro, lots of disappointed folks just north of us.

Meanwhile the liberty ship "Lane Victory" is a quick walk from the cruise port. It's a fascinating way to spend a few hours; most of the docents served on liberty ships.
