Marysunshine Posted September 9, 2011 #1 Share Posted September 9, 2011 Has anyone used the HOHO bus to the major sites in Athens? Also do you have to take the #40 bus to it or does it come close to the pier? Any info much appreciated.
Marysunshine Posted September 10, 2011 Author #2 Share Posted September 10, 2011 This seems like such an affordable and easy way to get around in Athens. Surely someone must have tried it. Anyone?????
2pbears Posted September 10, 2011 #3 Share Posted September 10, 2011 I just googled Athens HOHO and found a map of the route that the bus takes. It appears to be just around town so you would have to get to town from the ship.
eh2zed Posted September 10, 2011 #4 Share Posted September 10, 2011 Unless there are mobility issues Athens including Acropolis, Plaka, Syntagma Square, Stadium ,etc is very pedestrian. You just need to get from Piraeus to the downtown. We use a cab.
Summer1961 Posted September 10, 2011 #5 Share Posted September 10, 2011 Do you just get a cab when you get off the ship or do you suggest reserving in advance ?
eh2zed Posted September 10, 2011 #6 Share Posted September 10, 2011 Do you just get a cab when you get off the ship or do you suggest reserving in advance ? Cabs are lined up waiting for you at the pier. On the way back head for a taxi stand. You usually cannot flag one down.

This one leaves from near the main port gate in Piraeus and does not require separate transfer to Athens: http://www.city-sightseeing.com/tour-Athens We didn't use it because we walked to the green line electric train, but on our walk we did see the bus parked just outside the main port gate. Marysunshine Posted September 11, 2011 Author #8 Share Posted September 11, 2011 where does the green line take you? does it take you to syntagma?
Gamin2008 Posted September 23, 2011 #9 Share Posted September 23, 2011 where does the green line take you? does it take you to syntagma? Looking at the Port Explorer that I downloaded from Celebrity Cruise site, and it says " Regular bus service (green bus) runs into Athens approx. every 10 minutes. For Athens and its suburbs use the blue bus ". But I've read that the green line Metro goes from port to Monastriraki station which is right in the center: http://www.cretetravel.com/Athens/Athens_mini_guide/Athens_mini_guide-Metro_map.htm
Rare cruisemom42 Posted September 23, 2011 #10 Share Posted September 23, 2011 where does the green line take you? does it take you to syntagma? The Athens metro "green line" is also called the electric train. It goes from Piraeus into the heart of Athens. The best stop on this line for the Parthenon is Monastiraki. One more stop will get you to Syntagma Square, if that is where you want to go. Here's a map: http://www.mlahanas.de/Greece/Regions/images/AthensMetroMap.gif The only thing to be aware of is that, depending on where your ship docks, it is about a 30-45 minute walk to the metro station. Many times I've given directions here. Just do a search on this forum for "Athens step by step". I've never used any of the buses from Piraeus, so I have no info to help there. But like another poster said, I can't see the HOHO in Athens being worth it as most of the area that tourists want to see is pedestrian only and will involve some walking. The fastest and easiest way to get into Athens from Piraeus (assuming there's no strike) is by taxi. A ride from Piraeus to the Plaka area (near the Acropolis) should be about 20-25 euro for up to 4 people in a cab.

In fact anything else will slow you down. You can easily visit the entire area in a day, by foot as long as you have an idea of where you are going.
