Walkie Talkie Advice

We've used walkie talkies aboard ship before - we have the ones that go 1-2 miles (I think). They don't work very well. Does anyone have experience using the new ones with the 5 mile range? Do they work better than the older ones? Thanks for your help!

I have found that the walkie talkies that have the privacy codes work well, but not the ones that do not. My walkie talkies are the Motorola Talkabout T5420. It's not so much how far they work, but the privacy code that is most important from what I have found. Good Luck!

Last month on the Sun this advisory was posted by NCL in a Freestyle Daily:

"Please do not use cellular, two-way radios or radio frequency devices while onboard the M/S Norwegian Sun as this may interfere with the ships satellite and navigational system."

Wow, I've never heard that onboard a ship re: not using those devices. What are the crew members going to do without the cell phones that they use frequently?

I've never heard that the cruiseships don't want you to use walkie talkies onboard or it'll interfere with their satellites etc. Is this something new???

The most important thing with the walkie-talkies is that it has plenty of subchannels or you'll be listening in on lots of chit-chat

Oh My!

I sure hope NCL has more modern navigational devices than anything that can be intercepted by cheap $ 40.00 Motorola walkie talkies!!!

Just watched the cruise show on the travel channel, much of which included comments and clips from the Dawn, and a cruise travel expert suggested bringing walkie talkies.

On our Sun cruise last year, we found the walkie talkies (privacy code, 1 or 2 milers) didn't work very well between shipboard areas However, we got great use out of them in ports. Our Freestyle daily also stated that use of the walkie talkies was discouraged. I assumed this was due to possible disruption of other passengers that this could cause. (Annoying beeps going off in the middle of shows, etc.)

We used Motorola Talkabouts purchased at Costco for about $40 for two. They have a 5 mile range I think and many channels to chose from. One of the best features is that you have a choice of alarm signals which you can use to alert the person that you are the one that is making a call to the reciever. We were able to keep in touch with our daughter and always felt that she was safe on the ship. I was also able to stay back on the ship in Cozamel while my family shopped for the second time (you guys know what I mean)and then later find them in town. I was actually able to talk to them from the ship while they were shopping.
