njhorseman Posted December 4, 2011 #1 Share Posted December 4, 2011 http://www.royalgazette.com/article/20111203/NEWS04/712039993 Per this article, they are recommending a single casino to be opened in a central location such as Hamilton. There's no mention of permitting cruise ship casinos to open while in port. They are also recommending changes and improvements to the public transportation system serving Dockyard. Thanks for the link. I hope they put some late night bus run to the dockyard. I miss porting in St George where you could stay out late and still catch a bus back to the ship. My last night at the Swizzle inn was cut short as to not miss the last bus. It makes it hard to spend money on the rock .

ragtiki2004 Posted December 6, 2011 #5 Share Posted December 6, 2011 Ferries would be great in the evening. It would really help the local economy. Bob
Langoustine Posted December 7, 2011 #6 Share Posted December 7, 2011 I miss porting in St George So do the people in St. George. We tendered in from the Veendam in September and the merchants were very happy to see us. They said when rough seas cause the Veendam to go directly to Hamilton, their business drops off to almost nothing. They would love it if the government would widen and deepen the cut so ships could once again come into the harbor. But even that wouldn't solve the problem of making the cruise lines shut down the casinos while they're in Bermuda.

With the Veendam no longer going to Bermuda after next year, there aren't any ships currently sailing to Bermuda that would fit through the cut, even if they did widen it. Good point. We took the bus to the Dockyard one day, and the ships anchored there looked enormous compared to Veendam. I wonder if HAL would reconsider if Bermuda let them keep the casino and shops open while in port, assuming that would change the economics of the Bermuda run enough. They probably would and would put one of their ships which doesn't have the "duck tail" and would fit through Town Cut. I think HAL lost a lot of money from complaints from people when they had to tender into St. G. The additional revenue from the casino would probably be a great incentive. ragtiki2004 Posted December 9, 2011 #10 Share Posted December 9, 2011 I can't see the Bermudian government allowing any type of gambling in their country at this time. Just my opinion. Bob
