merinski Posted December 16, 2011 #1 Share Posted December 16, 2011 We are wondering if there is free wifi near the port?:)
barbados Posted December 16, 2011 #2 Share Posted December 16, 2011 Shouldn't be any problem except in the extreme NE part of the island. Here's a map of the current coverage: http://www.wifispottr.com/
Aplmac Posted December 16, 2011 #3 Share Posted December 16, 2011 Shouldn't be any problem except in the extreme NE part of the island. Here's a map of the current coverage: http://www.wifispottr.com/ Results at this website are NOT impressive. Isn't the recent Free WiFi thrust in Barbados supposed to be at the very least Bridgetown-wide?? What I saw for (St.Michael=Bridgetown) 'results' from the website shown was * three locations at Univ. of W.Indies (no use to cruisers) * one at Pirates Inn (Browne's Gap, nowhere near Bridgetown) * and 2 coffee shops in Bridgetown. Underwhelming to say the least. I thought we were further ahead on this..but maybe this web-site is way out of date? Who knows? . .

BOOGALOO509 Posted December 17, 2011 #5 Share Posted December 17, 2011 I received a mail from the Barbados Tourism agency earlier this week claiming that as of now the whole island is WI-FI covered. This is part of a major technology push covering a number of aspects between now and 2020. I have no idea if this claim is true and if it is how good the coverage actually is, maybe someone currently living on the island can expand on this aspect. Aplmac Posted December 17, 2011 #6 Share Posted December 17, 2011 I received a mail from the Barbados Tourism agency earlier this week claiming that as of now the whole island is WI-FI covered. I have no idea if this claim is true and if it is how good the coverage actually is, maybe someone currently living on the island can expand on this aspect. I'd take this with a pinch of salt, if I were you. ;) I just consulted my techie friend here on the island 1,250 ft. is as far as any WiFi output can travel. The island is 21 miles long (N-S) -- and 14 mi. wide (E-W) Apparently, the scheme is quite dependent on persuading commercial entities like hotels, bars, restaurants, etc to leave their individual privately-paid-for WiFi ...open and unfettered, sharing the bandwidth, sharing the love. :) I think I'm supposed to leave my WiFi router on too, with no password necessary but I turn it on maybe once a month to download books from Amazon.com, onto my Kindle. ___________________________ Test: I live in suburban Bridgetown, about the same distance East of the city as the Port is, West of the city... I just went out onto my patio with my Kindle-3 turned on, to receive free WiFi from an outside free source Nothing happened. .
pizza123 Posted December 18, 2011 #7 Share Posted December 18, 2011 When we were there last week, people were sitting all over in the port on their computers, we went to the Boatyard and got free wifi at the bar ( didn't try it on the lounger on the beach) but it was way faster than the ships..... merinski Posted December 19, 2011 Author #8 Share Posted December 19, 2011 Thank you, it sounds like it will be a good possibility. Maybe we'll try from our deck even?:)
hammers Posted December 20, 2011 #9 Share Posted December 20, 2011 I tried to make a skype call from the cruise port shops, it was not very successful. The wifi signal was very weak. I spoke to other people who were having a similar problem. I gave up in the end.
Rare knotheadusc Posted December 20, 2011 #10 Share Posted December 20, 2011 I flew out of Barbados last month. The airport had a strong and free WiFi connection.
weltek Posted December 22, 2011 #11 Share Posted December 22, 2011 The terminal building has wifi, but there are a TON of crew taking advantage of it in the a.m., thus it might be slow. Later in the day, the terminal building had emptied out.
