dincus Posted January 2, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 2, 2012 We anchor at St. Barts, Virgin Gorda, and Grand Turks. Does anyone know where the tender boats dock? Thanks.

Floridiana Posted January 2, 2012 #3 Share Posted January 2, 2012 In Virgin Gorda, the tenders dock in Spanish Town - except that there is really no town to speak of. It's better to take a taxi to the Baths or one of the ship's excursions. We walked to one of the beaches by sneaking through the property of a closed hotel. I would not recommend it since the beach was not good and close to the inlet of a brook that came out of a residential area. The town of Gustavia on St. Barths is small but nice, clean, and compact. You can walk up to the ruins of a fort that overlooks Shell Beach. Some people went to Shell Beach for a swim.
roothy123 Posted January 7, 2012 #4 Share Posted January 7, 2012 Yes, the tender takes you right into the town. We went to a car rental place near by and rented a car, but of course, that's not necessary. I don't remember how to do it, but you can walk to the place where the small planes come right over your head on the way to landing near the beach. It's pretty wild. Google (or maybe You Tube) the airport at St. Barts and you'll probably find something that explains why the airport there is so dangerous, with the pilots needing special training to land there. First they have to come between 2 mountain ranges, circle around, come really close to cars on a highway near the airport, and land right before a beach and water. It's cheap entertainment to go to the spot where the planes fly overhead, and also to the beach to see them land so close to you! When we were there 2 years ago, there was a tourist rep right at the tender dock, so you could pick up a map and also ask questions. We enjoyed walking up to the dinky lighthouse near by and looking down over the harbor. We were supposed to dock in Grand Turk, but after making two or 3 passes, the captain decided it was too rough to do so. Is Oceania now anchoring? If so, that's probably a good thing, as I understand many a cruise ship (and not just Oceania) has had to bypass Grand Turk because of rough water! zula Posted January 7, 2012 #5 Share Posted January 7, 2012 Hello, Last time we visited St.Barths, we also walked to Baie St. Jean which is right next to the airstrip/port. You just walk up the hill left of Gustavia in the direction of the lighthouse and then follow the road when it turns right. It is not a very long walk, but you have to walk right next to the cars, so you have to be careful. The beach in Baie St. Jean is a very beautiful white beach (with some bars = not cheap). And as mentionned by the other posters it is really something to see some of the airplanes land so near the beach. We will be visiting St.Barths in february and probably we will do the same walk to Baie St.Jean. Sonja
