The ship's smoking areas, inside and out, are complete with ashtrays that are cleaned on a regular basis and appropriate furniture (tables and chairs).

You are not relegated to the depths of the ship, but rather are treated as a paying passenger.

I was on Pacific Princess last year and my neighbours were very heavy smokers. When we were in port, I could not open my balcony door without smoke coming into my cabin. It was also quite evident as you walked past their cabin. I was most reluctant to notify people but I could not enjoy my cabin. I did notify the desk and after that it appeared to stop almost instantly.

If your cruise is being negatively impacted, you have the right to contact the passenger services desk. Someone can't be smoking on their balcony and then claim they don't know the policy.

Policy is very hard to control, there was a lot of passangers smoking on the balconys on my cruise...my balcony was on deck 12 and it overlooked the cabins below, you could see them plus the smoke rose up,so also smelt the smoke.

I seen them using there tea cups to extinguish there butts, due to not having ashtrays.they new they were doing the wrong thing because they were constantly looking around to see who's seeing them, but they didn't care really.

It's a fine if they are caught and it increases with each breach.not really a deferent I don't think!

I was on the Diamond Princess::)

Personally, I would have taken a photo and then take my camera (or phone) to the front desk. They are counting on nobody catching them but if the front desk wants to enforce the policy (and in this case, it's $ for the ship), it would be easy to ding them.

Best to report it. If you call the front desk and give your cabin number and the location of the cabin where you observe the smoking, they will attempt to meet with those smokers first and issue a warning.

Will likely be in the area of smoke if I am at the Terrace Pool on Star Princess? Very allergic & will stay awayifnecessary but pool location & size surgeons great in the deck plans! :)

We were on the Star Princess last month and there was a smoking area on the port side of the Terrace pool, up in the bar area. I didn't notice a smoking area by the pool itself but can't promise there wasn't one. I didn't spend much time back there but did smell some smoke when I was there. The pool is downwind from the bar smoking area. But you might be OK if you stuck to the Starboard side.

In general, I was pleased to be able to avoid smoke outdoors by staying on the opposite side from the designated smoking areas. Not so near the casino and even in the lobby area where smoke drifted in from the casino. But those areas are quite large and airy so the smell is not very strong. Smoke is a huge issue for me and I really enjoyed the cruise despite some smoke.

We are coming back to Princess after an absence of 5 years and made an assumption that there would be no smoking areas inside .

How can Princess control the smoking area in the Casino to ensure that the smoke does not drift over to the non smoking areas?

There aren't any doors on the casino. They definitely should add some, it would help keep the smoke in. They also leave the door to the cigar bar open so that smoke drifts into the common area and up the stairs into the Princess Theater. Once we figured this out we sat on the opposite side of the theater and that solved it for us. It would be good if all returning cruisers who are bothered by the indoor smoke make some suggestions. Perhaps future ships will be designed, or current ships re-designed, to keep the smoke inside the smoking areas.

The Casino on the Royal and Regal has an open staircase in the center going up to the next deck. I'm sensitive to smoke and I wasn't bothered by smoke smell in adjacent spaces. Looks like they might have gotten the design right after the issues on Grand class ships.

As we are on the Royal that will be better then .

I was under the impression that the USA was against smoking indoors (Just like Scotland) and that any cruise Ship that sailed from a US port would comply.

I am obviously wrong on that count.

Just back from a week on the regal and I can say that if you walk near (within a couple feet) the casino you can smell it, but beyond that it's hard to tell. The only other place we smelled any smoke was aft in the smoking area which is to be expected. At night we went to the outrigger bar for a drink and you could not smell the smoking and I know they were smoking right above us.

Could you please tell me where to find the smoking policy. Also, we have a 9th deck, port-side cabin booked on the Regal. Do we need to quickly switch to the starboard side if we do not want smoke wafting up to our balcony from I'm not certain where (do not know where smoking is and is not permitted).

Thank you kindly.

We have never had smoke come up from the Promenade deck on a balcony.

Its under onboard experience FAQ section:

Keeping the comfort of our guests a priority, and in consideration of consumer studies which show smokers are a small minority of guests, Princess has implemented the following smoking policy:

Designated Smoking Areas

Clearly marked “Designated Smoking Areas” are available onboard and include a sufficient number of ashtrays that are emptied regularly. Generally, these areas include cigar lounges, a section of the nightclub and casino, as well as a portion of the open decks. As a safety precaution, guests are reminded to properly dispose of cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco, which are never to be thrown overboard as this may be sucked back into the ship and cause fires.

Stateroom Smoking Policy Update

For all voyages departing after January 15th, 2012, Princess Cruises will prohibit smoking in guest staterooms and balconies. This policy change reflects the preferences of a vast majority of our guests who value having their primary living space (both stateroom and balcony) smoke-free. As balconies are a hallmark of Princess Cruises, we believe it is important to keep this peaceful space clear of smoke. Violations to this policy will result in a $250 fine for each occurrence, which will be charged to the guest’s stateroom account. Keeping with the global trend toward more restrictive smoking policies and honoring the wishes of our guests, we feel this change will enhance our onboard experience and do more to help our guests escape completely.

Electronic Cigarettes

The use of electronic cigarettes is allowed within the confines of the guest's stateroom (balcony not included) and within designated smoking areas only.

I don't know where you find the policy, but I was on the 8th floor and never smelled any smoke so I doubt that you will on the 9th. As I mentioned the only time we smelled and noticed it was on the back of the ship.

I just came off the Regal..beautiful ship. I didn't find an issue with any smoke on Deck 9 but there was someone smoking on their balcony down from us...I couldn't tell you which cabin. After two days that stopped so assume someone spoke to them. The worst place for smoke was in the casino. Even though they have designated machines where you can play and on some days no smoking at all, it certainly deterred me from playing in the casino because you could smell the residue..it gets into the fabric of the chairs, carpet etc. (sure wish Princess didn't allow smoking inside PERIOD!)

I hesitate to stick my foot in the water on this thread but here goes. Would someone who is familiar with the smoking areas on the Royal please comment on what they are like? Is it an ash tray stuck in some obscure corner at the furthest end of a deck? Is there anywhere to sit, relax and socialize with fellow smokers? Is there shelter from the elements? IMO, as long as Princess allows smoking on the ships then I feel that the passengers deserve to have a nice comfortable area. Please, no lectures on the ill effects of smoking just information on the smoking areas. Thank you.

I know that I am two months late on this reply but the Royal has the best spot on deck 17 aft for smoking. Lounge chairs, occasional wait staff to get drinks for you and coffee and juice in the morning. It was perfect, did not bother the non-smokers and since it is at the very end of the ship during sea days the odor just drifted off to sea. My wife is a cigarette smoker and I and my brother enjoy the occasional cigar, this was perfect. The best of all worlds for those of us who indulge in the nasty habit without bothering those who have made it their life mission to make it impossible for us. (Please understand that I do not favor smoking in areas that will in fact offend others but I love the fact that there can be places made for a win/win.
