jhale Posted February 6, 2012 #51 Share Posted February 6, 2012 I caught a clip this morning about a ship out of NOLA having 200+ sick pax. I didn't catch which ship, and can't seem to find anything online. This was on a Houston station this morning. I'll see if I can find out and post back. FIRSTLAKE Posted February 8, 2012 #54 Share Posted February 8, 2012 What happens to those people who answer the embarkation questionaire truthfully and indicate a recent history of gastro symptoms or fever? Also if you get sick just a few days before the cruise will cruise lines allow you to reschedule to prevent people from showing up sick and being untruthful on the questionnaire ? cschultz Posted February 8, 2012 #55 Share Posted February 8, 2012 We were on the Voyager of the seas last week. We had to fill out the questionare on boarding. The ship was mostly older people. We were hit hard by the norovirus. I bet over a third of the people on the ship got it, including myself and my husband. It was pretty bad for about 24-36 hours. We have been on over 15 cruises prior to this one, and never had a problem before. We washed our hands frequently, and used the hand sanitizer every time we entered the dining room. It does not help when sick passengers touch the handles of the spoons in the self-serve buffet. I think the crew should have to serve the passengers when this kind of thing is running rampant all over the ship.
sandij Posted February 9, 2012 #56 Share Posted February 9, 2012 Make sure you pack some disinfectant wipes ( to clean up the cabin a bit) and don't ever forget immodium and pepto, that way you can fight it yourself early.

I was just on the Celebrity board, they are reporting it. I was reading an article today about the Hal ship that had 4 outbreaks, so they halted everything for 2 days, stripped and sanitized the beds, threw out EVERY pillow:eek: I never thought much about pillows, I think it was too obvious! Everyone is giving the handwashing advice, but what good is it really? Wash hands before you eat, yes, but think of it...you've handled a plate (sides have been touched just getting it off the pile), it's on a tray scooting it's way down the metal bars people touch, onto a table, sit on a chair or bench, used a salt shaker or other condiment, filled a glass or cup. etc. There's no such thing as hands free dining, even in the DR!! elcuchio24 Posted February 9, 2012 #59 Share Posted February 9, 2012 Media overblows everything. 100 sick people on a large ship is percentage wise similar to how many people are sick out of any random sample of 4000 people on land.
jc4me Posted February 9, 2012 Author #60 Share Posted February 9, 2012 Any thoughts? I believe that you cannot live life afraid of everything. I do take reasonable precautions by washing my hands often and then I will use hand sanitizer just before I eat. I do this when eating out at home as well. When we cruise in a few days I plan to wipe down surfaces in our room with Clorox wipes and to spay our beds and pillows with Clorox spray to hopefully kill anything that might be lingering. I don't know anything else that we might be able to do in order to stay well. Hopefully that will do it. My husband sees that as being quite extreme. Froufie Posted February 9, 2012 #61 Share Posted February 9, 2012 You may also wish to use the clorox wipes on the plane if you are flying! I have heard of lots of nasty bugs hanging around those trays/seat belts/touch screens etc! Doesn't hurt to be a little extra cautious:eek:
elcuchio24 Posted February 9, 2012 #62 Share Posted February 9, 2012 Any thoughts? There will always be Noro, I don't think it's possible to erase it 100% of the time. Just a risk of travel. Our you can stay in your house, lock the door, cover yourself with hand sanitizer and sit in the tub all day:)

RuthlessBoss Posted February 9, 2012 #65 Share Posted February 9, 2012 Ever ride in a cab, go to a movie, ride the subway, eat at a restaurant, ride an elevator? Go grocery shopping:eek:, shop for clothes, handle money, handle chips at the casino, touch a slot machine, touch a hand rail, carry your tray to a table, touch salt shaker, get a drink, sit down, go to a show, slept in a bed. One thing Holland America did was replace every pillow on that ship a while ago. That one really hit a homerun with me, not something people think about! What's the first thing you do when you lay down??
