Stewards had a clipboard on cart clearly showing who had not paid tips

I just clicked on the red triangle and followed the directions. I've never done this before, but I noticed every post has this red triangle, so couldn't anybody do this or just the person who originally started the thread. Just curious.

OMG, I tried sooooooo hard, but I just can't do it when my character is being maligned. One of the things I do well is read! I am a first grade teacher, with a master's degree as a reading specialist and at the dissertation stage in the same field. My reading and comprehension skills are excellent. There was absolutely no space on this form for signatures of guests, there were plus and minus signs and HANDWRITTEN notes in blue ink, cursive, which gave me a doubletake because everybody seems to print nowadays, about the gratuities.

I'm gonna try really hard again, but if you don't believe me, that's fine, but why try and say I "misinterept" things? This was not even open to interpretation, it simply was a document with information on it. I never dreamed posting this was going to open a can of worms.

I can recall when somebody went on a tour and saw a similar list. If this person had posted and said a similar list existed without the photo he would have been called a liar too. Who would have thought THAT one existed? I can understand that a photo would settle the whole thing, sorry I'm lousy at picture taking.

Again, sorry I am posting again, but this is getting insane. I LOVE Carnival and have no motivation to lie, I was just sharing a facet of the cruise I thought others would be interested in knowing about.

Oh, Pickle, Pickle, Pickle. I researched a little about a "LIST" but couldn't find what I was looking for. There was indeed a thread in the past that contained a PICTURE of a list posted on a wall. No one has come forth to recall about this picture. So, although I'm not with you on a few things, unless I'm crazy, there was indeed a photo of a list. They must exist.

Nope, you're not crazy. It was the guy from San Diego, his wifes name is Wendy. I just can't think of his screen name right now. He took the picture during the Galley tour. I remember it well. Gosh I wish I could think of his name. Really nice guy!!!

Thank you for locating this. I did NOT imagine this other list was on a clipboard, though some people have made me feel like I'm in the twilight zone.

I actually found the thread through a google image search which took me to this CC article, where someone else claims that they found a similar list on a steward's cart whilst looking for soap. The article is dated July 2011.

I wonder what happened to him.

He just disappeared all the sudden.

I'm gonna try really hard again, but if you don't believe me, that's fine, but why try and say I "misinterept" things? .

Your quotes around 'misinterept" indicate that you are quoting me and I did not say that. I said that years of dealing with your posts indicate that you often "misinterpret" what you've read.

I was a high-school English teacher and department chairman for 16 years, and I am well-aware that the amassing of certain credentials does not necessarily indicate a mastery of the skills being studied.

Pickle, we've had this discussion before, on other occasions when you've misunderstood things you've read, and you always throw your "credentials" out as being indicative that it is impossible for you to ever make an interpretive gaffe or a comprehension mistake.

I'm not trying to assail you or pick on you. I just suggested that your previous posting history was indicative that perhaps you had once again misinterpreted something which you had read.

Don't be so defensive, dear.

I have not read every page of this thread but have read many. So this might have been covered but I may have missed it.

We hear all the time that if you tip your steward in cash, but have removed your auto tips, the steward must turn in those tips to a pool. But if you tip the steward in cash and have not removed your auto tips he/she is allowed to keep them. If that is indeed true then there must be such a list so they know if the cash is theirs or needs to be turned in.

I do believe the steward keeps the cash tips. He probably has to share with his assts though. Or at least is supposed to.

Which is why I make a point of tipping both of them,

in addition to my pre-paid tips that is somehow usually included in the price of my cruise

-and I consider myself to be cheap: hate to think how really cheap some others are!!

Since reading about tips, for the last 2 cruises, I now tip both to be sure the hard working assistant gets his/her own tip. There is no guarantee (to me) that the steward actually shares.

Correct! from my understanding and what I have been told by cruise line domestic staff.

The importance of rewarding your cruise domestic staff does not always have a monetary value, after all we all like to get free money dont we?

By commending your favourite staff with an "over and above service card" drop off at the Pursers desk you are not only giving credit to the individual who served you but to the entire department or section that served you.

This also opens "higher duty positions" for both under-waiter and stewards second to move ahead and become a "first" in their own right.

The cards and recommendations also give the domestic staff time off ashore.

Could you imagine visiting a port time and time again without ever experiencing that port? You may well see plenty of entertainment staff ashore all the time but for domestic staff it is a rare privilege given for "service over and above" not the amount of individual tips they collected.

Take some time on your next cruise to discuss this with staff. No doubt the $ rules but if you really want to reward them give them a AAA+++ on a service card.

I don't understand why people choose to remove tips and then say they are going to give a cash tip. What difference does it make?

The only difference I can infer is that most Americans carry credit card debt to one degree or another. (thankfully I do not). If they leave it on their sail & sign, then it adds to the credit card bill and thus increases their debt total, if they decide to pay it in cash, it alleviates that portion of possible future debt. Just a thought.

I disagree, the majority of the "World" lives on credit and pays via credit cards and it matters not to most weather its on a card causing possible future interest or cash in the pocket at the time!

I still believe that a large percentage of " cash only" tippers on cruises have done the math before hand and worked out its cheaper per "state room" to tip individually rather than to pay the graduates charged per day by the cruise line.

The exception is cruisers who keep on board graduates in place and tip that little bit extra .

Uncle Google delivers again.

I believe this is the infamous list/thread you were thinking of.

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=979991

Please remember this list is from the Splendor "Swine Flu" Cruise. I was on this cruise. We never got to go to Mexico Ports and we also disembarked over 60 people at Long Beach before heading to a rainy cold San Francisco?. This was not your "ideal" cruise.

Of course it's cheaper to pay individuals. But to keep auto tips on, those "forgotten" people who are so important get their share too.

I was on that cruise, too. There was a near riot with about 600 people lined up at the purser's desk at one point, screaming and demanding their money back and almost all of them removed their tips to "show" Carnival that the onset of the Swine Flu disease was all Carnival's fault. It was a 7-day cruise to Cabo but our only port stop was San Francisco where it was 53 degrees and raining.

But it was still a great trip with great friends!

The list of people who had withdrawn their tips could have also been part of letting the staff know which rooms would be empty for the remainder of the trip.

Just a thought.

I think it was 600 people. rather than 60 who disembarked.

This sort of sums it up:
