Golf Excursion--Ship vs. Private

AGG3

Recommended Posts

We will be arriving by cruise ship and want to play golf at one beautiful course while in Hawaii. We can play on Maui, Kona or Kauai. We are trying to decide if we should do the ship's golf excursion, which would be more expensive, or if we should take a taxi to a nearby course and save money while having an outstanding experience. The ship departs between 4-6 PM at each port so we don’t have a lot of extra time to travel far from the cruise ship dock. Any golf course suggestions would be helpful. Also, pros and cons of a ship golf excursion vs. a private golf itinerary would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

In Maui, we are docking at Lahaina. In Kauai, we are docking at Nawiliwili. Big Island, Kona. Do you know the name of the course on Kauai that is close to the pier? Thank you for any info.

You aren't docking in Lahaina, it is a tender port.

There are two Kaanapali courses (one a former Senior Tour stop) about 15 minutes by taxi to the north. The Royal Course (formerly North Course) is the better of the two, fun, good course. Good views.

Further to the north of Lahaina (20-25 mins by taxi) are the Kapula courses. Plantation is the site of the opening stop on the PGA tour. Wonderful course. Great views. Play as early as possible- the wind can be challenging in the afternoon. The other course is the Bay course. Also great views. A little easier than Plantation, but still a solid, fun course.

In order, I would play Plantation, Kaanapali Royal, Bay and Kaanapali Kai. I have played all of them several times, and will be playing some again later this month.
