Do you take your 'good' jewelry on a cruise?

mips

In all of my travels, I have NEVER had to take off jewelry. Precious metals in normal jewelry, unless in some huge quantity, will not set off security alarms. Not in an airport and not in a prison. You are taking a HUGE risk of losing them and if it is setting the alarm off and it is just a regular ring, I'd have it checked to see what kind of metal it is.

That being said, back to the original post, I wear my "bling" while on the ship, but in port, I wear a simple silver wedding band and silver earrings. On elegant nights, I wear the gorgeous diamond ring and earrings I inherited from my great grandmother. I did find a gorgeous pair of costume earrings that will look fabulous with one of my green dresses.

That is true. Gold or platinum will not set off the alarms. Only common metals will. I would also have it appraised just so you know what it is for sure.

Im not taking my wedding ring (only expensive jewlery I have). I wore it to NJ casino a couple of years back and someone clipped my diamond right out of my setting, ring was still on my finger, diamond gone.

So I will either not wear a ring at all, or wear a set from Avon.

How did the thief manage to do that?

Great thread.....my jeweler forbade me to wear anything real last year in Europe......he "yelled" at me to leave the good stuff home........I did not totally listen and just wore the two rings I wear every day and don't take off (a diamond and a sapphire). What I do in port is turn the rings around and keep my hands out of view (usually holding my small travel purse close to my body)......hubby doesn't wear jewelry and walks around with his hands in his front pocket where he keeps his wallet......

I wear Mickey Mouse watches so not expensive.........I do take "fake" necklaces, earrings etc but not flashy for port.

On our next cruise to eastern Canada I will not be as concerned. The trick is not to look like a victim and that is true anywhere you are including home.........

So do what makes you comfortable......my one friend went out and bought a 6 carat fake diamond to wear on vacation........really.......that is the same bling as real (grin)....can't tell from far............

Have a fun and safe trip

Dee

I'd rather be mugged for a real 6 carat diamond than for a fake one. But your advise to do what makes us comfortable is spot on.:)

I bring my jewelry. It's insured and I really don't dress up much at home, so I may as well sell it if I'm not going to wear it on vacation.. Most of the ports we visit are no more dangerous than San Pedro, CA, many less so. But I don't wear anything but my wedding ring (sometimes the engagement ring) and a watch in most ports.

Gosh, I've never had my wedding rings set off anything at airport security. I've never even given it a thought. Those must be some big rings!

I didn't say I set the alarms off. I don't. I said that I had to take my rings off. The reason... 99.9% of the time I am asked by Philadelphia International Airport TSA to do so. Both of my rings are platinum so I don't see the point but I do what TSA asks. They want the rings off and it's not offensive, invasive or a big hassle for me so I oblige. To avoid holding up the line I began taking them off before I get to the agent. It's no big deal.

For me it depends on the ports. If I'm going somewhere where I would be concerned about drawing attention, then I won't bring them. My rings are insured, but I also feel that they're irreplaceable - my wedding ring belonged to my husband's grandmother, and I wear three other rings that are family heirlooms. No amount of money could replace them.

So if we're going somewhere in Central or South America, I'll leave the good stuff at home. Europe I'll bring it. Africa - stays home. Asia...would probably depend on the destination. I took all my good jewelry to Japan, but would be more hesitant in a place like Malaysia. Honestly, I kind of go by my gut - there's no real logic :D

Sorry; for some reason I assumed the alarm went off. I still don't get it though. My rings are gold, not platinum, but I've never been asked to take them off. Maybe it's just Philadelphia? I've never flown there. I would not like it at all. But, I guess you don't aurgue with the TSA.

On our very first cruise many years ago, I decided that as it was just four days on a small ship in the Greek Isles, I would bring only what I (then) wore every day (wedding & engagement ring, small earrings & a watch) plus a set of costume jewellery for the evenings. I was nervous about leaving jewellery on the ship while in port and was even more nervous about leaving it in our hotel room in Athens while touring. Instead, everything would stay safely at home.

Everything went according to plan, until we returned to Athens at the end of our cruise, and touched base with our housemate. She informed us that while we were away, our house had been broken into and our bedroom emptied of any valuables - including every piece of jewellery I owned! Our last night of vacation was spent in our dingy hotel room, making a list for the police and the insurance company.

Now, if I think I might want to wear it, my jewellery comes along with me when I travel.

BTW, I'd also left my laptop at home "to keep it safe" - which resulted in me learning another important lesson: make sure all of your files are backed up - especially your photos! It was a memorable trip - just not for the right reasons.

I always take my good jewellery on a cruise but never wear it in port. I leave it all in the safe. Later this year we will be travelling in Europe and I've decided that I'll leave it all at home. I have a plain gold wedding band that belonged to my grandmother and that's all I'll take with me except for a pair of gold earrings and a relatively inexpensive watch.

I'm intrigued by the poster who was asked to remove her rings by the TSA. We travel a fair bit over Canada, the US, Carribean and Europe and I've never had that request made of me and my engagement ring has a pretty good sized centre stone. I'm not sure how I'd react if asked. My instinct is to ask them why before I complied. Then I would retain possession of it, certainly not them.

There are days my fingers are swollen and I can't get my engagement ring off. I wouldn't struggle with it at an airport security point.

All our travels not only have I never been asked to take off my wedding rings, I've never seen/heard anyone around be asked to do that. But I have never flown out of a PA airport and don't plan to soon.

I always wear my wedding set while traveling! I do not have a lot of really expensive jewelry, I mostly wear Tiffanys sterling silver! I do also have a diamond tennis bracelet and diamond studs that I do take! I do not wear much costume jewelry because I like the simplicity of my Tiffanys silver and it seems to go with most everything!:D In port though I don't wear jewelry because we usually swim, snorkle, etc and don't like to wear my jewelry in the ocean.

I've had to take it off 99.9% of the time over the last 3 years so I sewed a carribeaner in the mesh pocket in the front of my back pack. I put my engagement and wedding ring on it and put the whole pack in a bin. Works well for me and saves me the hassle of a full body pat down.

Not sure why you have had this trouble, but for what it's worth my wedding set is platinum and I have been through the Philadelphia airport many times in the few years, including 4 international flights, I've never been asked to take them off or been through a full body pat down... puzzling - sorry to hear

That's awful and I'm so sorry to read about your watch.

Do you know how/when it was taken? Was it at Security?

Thanks, I hate even thinking about it :( taken from my packed suitcase in the bottom of the closet probably when we ran out for dinner. My mistake, I should have put it the hotel safe but in my rush to pack for a morning train and get out the door to eat, it slipped my mind entirely. Nothing else was taken, including laptop, 2 cameras, passports, etc. Hotel was very charming, and the location could not have been better, but had only a doorknob lock/key, no deadbolt, just a chain, and they made you surrender your key if you were out of the room. I asked why and they said "for my safety!"

Why don't you wear those earrings?

Mostly because I work at an animal shelter, and dangly opal and Ruby earrings would not stand up to a big bouncy Pit Bulls ear kisses. At home I dont wear them because the parrots will try to steal my earrings out of my ears. :) And we never seam to go anywhere fancy enough to wear them. they have been worn since 2008, my sister in law borrowed them for her wedding, as did another friend.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts, I think I will bring the earrings and a couple of other fancy things to wear for formal nights, and make some chain mail to wear in port.
