Fab Five Finally Reach The STAR 2/26/12 Sailing!

Prologue:

Five characters boarded the Norwegian Star on 2/26/12 sailing from Tampa to the Western Caribbean. One included a 55 year old newbie to cruising. She picked Norwegian because she remembered as a little girl in St. Thomas seeing all the cruise ships in port. She recollected Norwegian had the best dressed pressed uniformed officers among them all standing along side their ship. Another included Mr. coka, 62, who decided to sail with his wife again because she booked a penthouse suite. A third, Mr. coka’s 82 year old ex-brother-in-law, partner in crime of yesteryear, and still very best friend although divorced from his sister, was a newbie to passenger cruising although not new to ocean sailing vessels. He brought along his 60-ish gal pal who has sailed other lines. This would be her first Norwegian. Lastly, a Peri-meno Pausal Platinum Pita, aka me, coka , on NCL cruise #34 or so to complete the group. We fab five booked cabins 10000, 10528, and 9080. Together, we consumed about 56 Lavazza coffee pods which more than made up for me never receiving the latitudes champagne bottle. Who knew a Lavazza buzz could be so much fun?

Embarkation:

Plugging in the address of 815 Channelside Drive in Tampa took Mr. coka and me directly to the ship by 10:45. We surprisingly met BIL and Gal Pal in the entrance line. Since no sign or message of Newbie’s arrival yet, we four went in. Check in was painless although I prefer the platinum line instead of the suite check in. That line appeared less busy and if Mr. coka actually knew the suite benefits, he would have them running ragged. He did however find out by the fifth day he could order in suite movies for free. Mr. coka enjoyed the suite check in treats while we waited to board!

Just prior to boarding the Star with the welcoming aboard staff, BIL wandered a bit and found himself getting a solo embarkation photo taken on the gangway as us seasoned cruisers stood by chuckling. No matter, he was happy.

Suite guests are escorted onto the ship and are brought to Cagney’s for lunch. Me and Mr. coka ditched the escorted group because I did not wish to do anything illegal by bringing BIL and Gal Pal with us. The couple were forewarned ahead of time when they decided to book the balcony that this wonderful benefit was only for suite guests. Although they declined booking a suite, I would not have been a very good hostess by ditching them upon arrival to their first Norwegian ship. They could have gone to the yummy buffet, but I suggested the Venetian instead so we could sit down and be served from a menu in a quite atmosphere.

Not opening until noon, I strongly recommended the couple sign up for the wine package. Only available on the first day, one can order 6-8 bottles of wine at 20% discount. The bottles are on display in the atrium and they took advantage of it. Mr. coka signed up for the soda package which included unlimited fountain soda for the week at a cost of 52 dollars. He also brought along crystal lite packages, green ice tea, and a magic bullet to make smoothies with. He never once made a smoothie as the desserts were more than enough for him. A water package is now available but I rely on what comes out of the ship’s tap. Besides, I was counting at the time on the welcome aboard Platinum champagne bottle and perhaps possibly winning another bottle if they gave one away at the latitudes party to whoever has cruised Norwegian the longest. Neither came true for poor little Platinum Pita spoiled me.

Last on the embarkation to do list was sign up for the spa package. The cost is 119 per person for the week or 30 dollars per person per day on port days only. If the spa is not busy at the time, one could ask if they can use it on a day at sea. They can only say no, right? It should be easier to say no now because the STYLE slogan is fading away. The Y stood for Yes. Do a spa tour first to see if you would actually use it every day. The Newbie signed up for it and her cost ended up to be 17 dollars per use because she went every day. My cost ended up 29.75 per use. I bought the package for Mr. coka and his turned out to be 59.50 per use. Mr. coka preferred the outdoor hot tubs and the very much deeper outdoor pool. The lap pool is about 3 feet deep and with his 2 brand new knees, he had a hard time swimming in it. The thessalotherapy (sp?) pool also had an entryway that was difficult for him to get into. The first step is steep. This does not mean everyone else will have a hard time. The newbie and I used it all with no major problem. The steam room was a bit too hot so the sauna was the better option for me. BIL and gal pal declined the spa because BIL would have to go from the front of the ship to the back of the ship to use it. He needs two brand new knees.

Once the very serious muster drill was over, the festivities began for all passengers. Norwegian has sail away parties that include music, barbecue, and activities with the cruise staff. The Fab Five missed it. In fact, BIL and Gal Pal had even missed the muster! BIL was frantic on the phone as he realized his flight home was scheduled on 2/25. The Star did not return until 2/26. He was contacting his son via telephone before they were out to sea so he could make the flight change for him. Nervous and shaking, BIL was visibly upset that he was going to have to pay 100 dollars more for the change and have to pay for an overnight hotel in Tampa. We all told him with straight faces that he also was going to be given a hefty fine for missing the drill.

After some expletives from BIL, the Fab Five went to forward balcony 10000 to enjoy the magnificent views leaving Tampa Bay. Mr. coka and I poured all the suite champagne bottle for our guests to enjoy. At the time I thought another was coming! The newbie showed me how to use the lavazza machine to make a latte or cappuccino. She has something similar at home. She got hot cream all over the machine, the hutch, and the rug. After three pod tries, she finally got it right for me to enjoy!

Dinner that evening was in Aqua, the mid ship smaller main dining room. Here I learned the newbie had some food issues and our waiter Winnie, along with the host were very nice about making sure she would not get something she was allergic to. If you have something specific about your diet, make arrangements before you cruise so the kitchen knows. The attention given to the Newbie along with their answers made her feel more comfortable. They asked where she was dining the following evening so they could make arrangements. In the end, she said she would be fine if she stayed away from MSG ingredients. Although Norwegian does not use this ingredient, she thinks remnants of it might be in the pre-packaged stuff. I did not really pay close attention to the whole thing because it was not about me. I did however note the staff was very kind and gentle with her! They wanted to make sure she did not get ill. Kudos to the Aqua servers! We enjoyed the lobster. I ordered double and ate them both.

After dinner we all went back to our cabins to unpack. Newbie was done in 2 minutes. She put her duffle bag in the closet. BIL and Gal Pal were not seen again until the following morning. Mr. coka and I debated about where things were going to be placed. I did ask Gary, our wonderful butler if anyone ever actually asked him to unpack their luggage. He said only a few times in his experience. The butler is responsible for taking care of the coffee machine, replenishing fruit bowl, and taking care of in suite special requests. Mr. coka requested orange juice and milk and he kept it plentiful for him. Our steward, Goldfried Banawan was awesome too! He remembered he was my steward on the Dawn to Bermuda once when I stayed solo in a cabin. I reminded him what happens on the Dawn ship, stays on the Dawn ship, and we laughed out loud. Actually, had I remembered I asked for a mattress topper back then, I would have asked if the Star had one too. Even so, I still slept well enough on the mattress. Healthy Mr. coka was with me this time!

Nobody attended the welcome aboard showtime or any of the first night time activities that included karaoke blast, sailing solo get together, family welcome aboard social, welcome aboard giant kick off party with cruise staff, or the late night dance party. There was music also playing all over the ship and we would later find out which ones we were attracted to. For now, everyone was interested in sleeping and I was happy to have hubby, family, and friends with me as I drifted off to sleep. Not all in the same bed of course, but on the same ship!

First Day At Sea

Ahhhhhhh, now this is why I splurged on the forward penthouse balcony. Opening up the bump out window curtains and seeing a beautiful sight. Nothing but the ocean and the sky ahead of me. Only a few ceiling tiles blew out when I opened the sea faring iron door but I am tall and can easily fix them back into place. Today we would try the lavazza button that included the mid size coffee cup serving. Our 2 padded deck loungers were very comfortable and we do not mind the wind at all.

The phone rang and we were asked what was going on for breakfast. Sorry, this suite platinum pita is going to Cagney’s for steak and eggs. Everyone else is on their own. They could go to the main dining room or to the buffet. In Cagney’s we met Bong. Okay Norwegian, time to promote this guy up the ladder. He was pleasant, outgoing, knowledgeable, and walked around with an eye for detail while engaging the guests. He has that aura about him which makes me think promote, promote, promote! We chose Cagneys for breakfast I think three times and once for lunch. Many cruise critics love Cagneys as the suite option for breakfast and lunch.

On another morning only BIL and I were the only two who wanted to eat breakfast so I did not ask if I could take him in Mr. coka’s place. Instead, I had him wear sunglasses, a cap, and not to talk upon entry as he is from Texas. Not many diners were there and I felt sneaky anyways. The feeling lasted about 2 minutes and we both enjoyed our time together. We reminisced about the time when he took me for my first colonoscopy exam because Mr. coka could not and we once again had tears of laughter rolling down our faces. I invited him back again for the summer months because I really miss talking to him and offered to have Mr. coka and I take care of him if he too decides to get his knees fixed. He said he would think about it.

The Fab Five met up together to attend the Cruise Critic Meet and Greet hosted by Don, also know as DGP1111 on cruise critic. We all met up in Le Bistro and many attended including the officers. Cards were given so we could call them. Not on a whim of course, but if we really needed something. I did not think it the time to mention the champagne as this probably should be done through the latitudes consultant. How do I reach him? Had I addressed it to anyone else, I might as well put my right pointer finger up my noise and my left pinky finger in my ear and talk in a whiney voice while mentioning it. We were sitting in the back of the restaurant and it was difficult to hear. Captain Kostas Fafalios invited everyone for a bridge tour on the last sea day.

Captain Kostas Fafalios? Fafalios? OMG, is that Constantinos Fafalios from the Sun’s brother? It sure looked like him. How cool I thought to have two brothers as Norwegian Captains. This guy was bigger than his brother and wore glasses. Even so, he commanded the presence and gave out the vibe where you just want to hug him. He spoke like his brother and he too was from Athens and the only Greek Captain working for Norwegian. Ohhhh, I wonder if that meant Constantinos no longer was with the company. I rememberd him from my Sun cruises and gosh, I just wanted to hug him because he was so nice when OceanDreams, her son, and I when we had our picture taken with him.

I have no idea what was going on for ship activities that day because I was sunning on the penthouse balcony. I did change back up for the latitudes party that afternoon. Held in Spinnakers, er, the new Spinnakers to those who sailed the Star prior, Mr. coka and I entered where the long line of officers stand and stare as you walk in. It was scary. No problem, I had Mr. coka with me. Upon entrance, the Captain said he remembers from long ago. “Do you have a brother Constantinos Fafalios?” No, that is me, he replied. So Kostas is a shortened named I asked. Yes, he replied. I told him I sailed the Sun many years ago and it was great to sail with him again. Gosh, I wanted to give him a hello hug, but these days nobody wants to see a tall foreign looking blonde hug a Captain on any cruise ship.

We walk a little further and Staff Captain Zeljko standing tall and stern states two words to me: “Da Pearl.” Yes, I reply as my legs start shaking and I begin to perspire. The line did not move because someone was talking to others in front of the line. So I added, “Yes, I sat across from you at dinner one time. I don’t remember what I said to you but I do remember getting kicked under the table by someone for whatever it was…” Thankfully, the line moved along. After we were seated Mr. coka asked why I did not introduce him. Three yellowbirds later I still could not come up with an answer other than I forgot that he was behind me. The real answer was that he should have been there with me all those years. He still has not the full story on the Gem and the competition thing. Whatever, right? hahaha

After seeing the free flowing cocktails at the latitudes party Mr. coka was not joining me for the suite VIP party. Although there are no VIPs anymore, I do not know what it they call it. Priority Party? LOL. No matter. Hey, if Mr. coka can understand me not joining him in the casino because of the possibility that cigarette smoke might suck me back into a world of nicotine bliss (Cigarettes on the Star about 37.50 per carton…I still look), then I can understand him not wanting to join me there. Since there was no latitudes platinum champagne to turn into wine, my goal was to see how much wine I could drink at the VIP party. Mission: Get there earlier than on time and sit near the bar. Alone, but much better dressed than a muscle shirt and capris back in 2004 or so on the Sun, I still felt like this picture once again as I walked in:

http://message.snopes.com/showthread.php?t=38943

Still flying from the yellowbirds (thank goodness I did not do the martini tasting at 4pm), I walked into the party past all the officers and staff lined up once again. I did deliver a message from Mr. and Mrs. Pearl VIP to one of them. Quiet and mellow, everyone walked through as staff stood at attention military style. Instead of shouting, “Boo!“ and scaring some of them to wake up, I just whispered loudly, “Smile, it will be over in 30 minutes!“ I asked a few where their happy faces were. I am such a platinum pita!

Scanning the new spinnaker’s lounge, I knew I did not want to sit in the line of chairs. I found one woman sitting solo and another woman sitting solo. Perfect. My mother taught me to find the person alone at the party and go over and talk to him or her. Good thing they were closest to the bar because otherwise they would have been left on their own. Fortunately we three were present for the same reason. How much wine could we drink in 30 minutes time? The answer is too embarrassing to report but I am still laughing about it.

During our endeavor I sort of missed the Botox Doctor coming over to me and talking about treatments. I sort of missed being asked where I was dining and could they make a reservation for me. I sort of missed the auctioneer asking if I planned on attending any of the art shows. There very well could have been more important matters that needed tending to…for example an assistant cruise director in trouble…or something like that? On this sailing I noticed very few mingling taking place. At one point I thought about taking charge by going around and talking to people. Heck, I think, wait, I know I sold a future Garden Villa to the passengers on the balcony of 10002. I know I could sell some things at this party. I sat instead and drank the wine fast while declining the really yummy looking hors d’oeuvres.

Having stayed way beyond the 30 minutes and getting my wine glass filled to the brim (to save for the following day of course), I give a very big KUDOS to the XXXX officer named XXXX for actually walking around and talking to the suite passengers. There were a few others who briefly talked to passengers but he stayed the longest. Although he does not know I was overhearing his conversation, he certainly did for the couple he was talking to in the manner that I remember the VIP functions for. Mr. XXXX, you ROCK and you made the couple you were talking to very happy. A job very well done! I did not put his name here because I do not know if they are not supposed to do that any more. Anyone know?

That evening the Fab Five ate at Le Bistro, compliments of the platinum pita. Since I had a free dinner for two plus a bottle of wine as a reward, I also used my OBC to share with the others. For booking a suite, I had 300 OBC and I cashed in 25,000 points on my Bank of America credit card for 250 OBC. I was a big shot to everyone until about Wednesday of the trip. Wednesday was the laundry special day so everyone got to pick their must do’s for laundry and I folded the best I could to fit 24 items in the bag. After that, forget about it. I went to reception and got a copy of my bill and I owed. No more Ms. Nice Buy For All!

The first day at sea is dress up or not night. I highly recommend seeing all the performances by the Star Show Girls and Guys. Who needs Jean Ann Ryan Company when you have this group? Seriously…I have sailed many Norwegian cruises and this group was the absolute BEST of them all. I figured this by the Shout! The Mod Musical! performed the second night. Mr. coka went to the casino, BIL and gal pal went to bed, so the Newbie and I attended the show after Le Bistro dinner and ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! Do you remember my Majesty review where JAR company was no longer and the ship had to perform on their own? Picture that even a thousand times even better. The five gals gave an awesome show and we were very well entertained. So much so that we decided their main shows were must do’s. I met them later on during the week and they were highly impressed with my British accent as I impersonated the mother of a British passenger, much to his displeasure.

Okay, I have to work tomorrow. I have been gone from there for 12 days and I do not know if I will be able to continue until later on this week. I 100% welcome anyone else on this week’s sailing to jump in and I welcome anyone to answer questions if asked. Whenever I post the first time after time after cruising, I feel rushed to finish. So, I might not look at this until I post again which will be what the Fab Five did during the Ports of Call. So, I’ll return around Friday night with the rest (yeah, right) unless there are any burning questions from the 3/11/12 or 3/18/12 cruisers.

Hey, if Mr. coka can understand me not joining him in the casino because of the possibility that cigarette smoke might suck me back into a world of nicotine bliss (Cigarettes on the Star about 37.50 per carton…I still look), then I can understand him not wanting to join me there.

So, I’ll return around Friday night with the rest (yeah, right) unless there are any burning questions from the 3/11/12 or 3/18/12 cruisers.

coka

I love your review. Since I have sailed 11 times on the Pearl, I know Staff Captain Zeljko Jurac. He does attempt to look very stern most of the times, but he is very funny man. I had the pleasure of sailing with Kostas on The Jewel through two hurricanes in one week. He is a nice guy. Thank you for my morning chuckle. Mandy

Catchy title, DH is an all time Fab 4 fan.

I was looking forward to the new chapter of your book and knew it will be another great read. So glad you and Mr. Coka and the other fab 3 had a wonderful time on the Star.

Thanks for taking time and sharing another cruise experience with all of us. Looking forward to Friday's continuation of your review.

Love the review so far!

We didn't get Platinum champagne...but did get wine on our Spirit cruise last month. I've seen other people here mention it should have been champagne. I wish I'd known...I would have swapped!

We enjoyed Captain Kostas very much on our PC cruise (even had the pleasure of being on tour with him). He's a very, very nice man!

Looking forward to future installments!

If I did get the champagne, I would have asked for wine. I do hope through my writing it shows that I am razzing :D

********************************************************

So I got my parties mixed up. The one mentioned above was towards the end of the week for the silver, gold, and platinum members. The Monday night suite party is far repressed for when the band played “Help me make it through the night” by Kris Kristofferson for all the suite guests, I whispered to the 10002 occupants for them to “help me make it through this party.” Good neighbors, they took me under their wings and talked to me.

The first day at sea ended with me and the Newbie shaking a leg on the dance floor to the 50’s and 60’s rock and roll party after everyone else went to bed after the late Le Bistro dinner. The youngest ones there, we helped assist all the women and men moving in their seats onto the dance floor. Newbie was awesome at this! Her goal for the week was to experience everything the cruise had to offer and she was not disappointed. My goal for the week was to sleep on the balcony in the sun all day long. Everything else was a bonus! She was a good motivator and we stuck around to watch dancing with the stars which is always a funny passenger interaction event. Put your name in the jar up front and see what happens…!

Roatan!

The Star docked in Coxen Hole, Roatan this week so getting off and on the ship was very easy to do. The newbie did a West Bay Kayak and Snorkel tour through Norwegian and she enjoyed it very much. She planned on doing all dive tours but she had not been in over nine years. She was very impressed with the ship shore excursion personnel because they would not let her dive until she became re-certified. Although mildly disappointing, she was happy they had her safety first in mind. The recertification took place a few days later which only I found odd. Why not do it in the pool or on the first port day? Regardless, the point is to have all your certifications updated to show them prior to the your trip. They do ask for proof.

The rest of us left the ship at 10am or so to meet up with Darren Flowers. Mr. coka and I met him 13 years ago on our first visit there when he was only 10. Having stayed in contact with him over the years, he welcomed us (Flowers Independent Tours), had a van ready outside the security gate, and joined us on an island tour. We went to Mahogany Bay, the West End, outside Tabyana Beach area, and a very nice resort at Infinity Bay. He knew a very nice shop to stop at so BIL and GalPal could get souvenirs for their loved ones back home. They found some hand carved mahogany boxes.

Darren explained there is so much competition on the island now that you will really see rock bottom prices everywhere. Throughout the day, we counted three, if not four, zip line canopy tours now found on the island. The new mayor is a good guy. A business man who is helping the island along. He owns and lives on the little island right in the bay near the ship. Norwegian has a tour there (Maya Key private island retreat) and it has received favorable reviews from many cruise critics. We finished the day visiting with Aunt Glenis who lives on the water down the road from the cruise ship. For sail away, we fab five stood out on the balcony as we faced her house. All waved goodbye until next time.

BIL and GalPal went to an early dinner because they wanted to watch the Glenn Miller and other big bands tribute by the Star show band. Other passengers selected The Second City Comedy Troup’s Main Show among other varied choices in each venue. Mr. coka, the newbie, and I found ourselves in what we called our twilight zone dinner. Either we were way off course or they were way out there. Our dinner went from scary to comical to scary again, just like the 1959 television series.

The service began with Mr. coka being served a gin and tonic instead of a plain tonic water. One sip and he readily turned it over to me with the most frightened look on his face. He wants to stay married. Once corrected, the Newbie and me were offered the gin and tonic. Oh no thank you. For the next 40 minutes the “do do do do” themed music played. Not really, but it might as well have. Although we ate everything on our plates, including dessert and coffee, we did think it important to report to our flustered servers two of the same dishes were very salty when asked how dinner was. We added we did not mind at all but other future diners there might. We also helped them figure out our proper bill. Gin and tonic was on it, then the tonic was on it.

Suddenly, out of nowhere the guy watching over everyone was at our table. We call him Rod Serling. We explain no, no we were not complaining at all. Sixty seconds after that the Executive Chef and FandB Director start coming down the long walk in between the tables! “Oh my god, they were coming our way! I announced under my breath we are in big trouble! Were they told the platinum pita’s party was upset or something? Mr. coka had time to add “Gosh, those two guys are all over the place. I have seen them walking around since day one checking on everything!” I began to humma humma under my breath like Jackie Gleason as they reached our table. “How is your dinner this evening?” they asked. Nobody readily answered out of fright and for the fact that these guys oversee thousands of meals every day. They work their tails off for us. So I state, “It’s Yummy!” They nodded in quiet approval and moved on to the next restaurant nearby.

That meal readily prepared newbie and I for all the sweaty dancing we would do at the really fun Caribbean Party held immediately afterwards in Spinnakers Lounge. A lot of passengers attended, everyone had seats, and enough of us danced. We were also very happy that everyone else too decided not to wear beach attire to it. A good time was had by all. We retired after that for Belize the next morning. It was going to be a long day on the balcony.

It is nothing unusual for the Restaurant Manger, Head Chef, the Food and Beverage Director and the Hotel Director wandering their way through the various dining rooms and stopping to talk to guests. It's called instant feedback. I have had all of them plus the Bar Manager descend on my table at the same time. I knew all of them except the Head Chef. That cruise was a little over a year ago and I am still laughing. I am still laughing about what you said about the Staff Captain in an earlier posting. Looking forward to the rest of your review.

WWW3, Keep in mind this story refers to me being a pita! LOL

Jimswims, since getting home from trip, mr. coka and I have been eating all the cold cereal your kids did not touch! Cold cereal for breakfast, cold cereal for lunch, and cold cereal for dinner! hahaha

*****************************************************

Belize: A tender port!

Wednesday is laundry special day in Belize. All you can fit into a bag for 24.95. Free if you are platinum. I love how the industrial machines make cotton items and jeans feel as I can not get the same feel like that at home. Do not put your dainty items in for cleaning. I recommend the dry cleaning service onboard the Star. They did two dresses for me and everything came out very fine! The price was still better than at home.

The Newbie booked in advance the Lamanai Ruins and River Safari Tour. She said it was well worth the price paid. The boat ride was worth it alone and she did not know it also included lunch. A 7.5 hour tour, she came back saying she completed an item on her bucket list by going. Having read about it in college, she always had it in the back of her mind to go there some day. I asked if there were bathrooms along the way and if it was hot. Plenty of bathrooms everywhere and a hat kept everything cool enough. Note that it gets hotter as you climb the stairs up though. The climb did not ruin her pretty pedi-cured toes either. She went to the salon onboard too!

If you are interested in a particular tour, then do not wait until you board to book, unless you want to get out of going on one like I did! The Lamanai tour is very popular as well as others, and can get sold out. You can be put on a waiting list in case someone cancels. Even so, if it is very important or a must do, then plan in advance online the Norwegian website. The remaining four of us were not dead set on anything and we were just happy to hang out on the ship all day.

Hanging out on the ship all day for me means eating at the buffet, laying in the sun, and getting up to power walk it off on the promenade. After that I eat some more (only this time at the Blue Lagoon), lay in the sun some more, then get up and go swimming to work it all off again. At one point Mr. coka and I played shuffleboard. If the areas on the promenade are full, one is on deck 13 aft just outside of Cagney’s restaurant on one side. The back deck area of ship was closed off for some sort of crew/staff function. Throwing the ACD overboard? Actually, it appeared to be something very nice for them such as an outdoor barbecue or awards ceremony. Whatever it was, it was pleasing to know something good was going on for them. Hooray for Norwegian if indeed a special function for them!

Mid cruise week is a good time for everyone to just do their own thing. Even so, we always knew where to find each other. Mr. coka would be in the casino when open. BIL and Gal Pal would be listening to piano player Don Alexander in Gatsby’s Lounge. Newbie would be out and about anywhere meeting passengers all over the ship. I could be found on the balcony staring at the water. Well, one time I would be staring at the hard bodied Adonis who happened to sun himself near the crew hot tub. Binoculars not needed. I looked through them anyways.

As mentioned before, this week had fantastic shows and in my opinion, one of the best of any I have seen yet (and I have seen a lot on Norwegian, Carnival, Princess, RCCL, and HAL). Another unique aspect of the Star evenings is that Cruise Director Pedro had the activities matching each other. For example, this night had the showgirls and guys doing 70’s theme performance and afterwards a 70’s party took place in Spinnaker’s. The same went for the second night with the 50’s and 60’s theme. Overall, there was thought and coordination to the main shows and to the passenger events afterwards. Bravo to Pedro, the Cruise Director and to his staff! They had energy and got passengers dancing all week long. If anything, it is totally worth it to see them dressed up 70’s style. They had the best costumes and they were totally professionally fun!

. . . The back deck area of ship was closed off for some sort of crew/staff function. Throwing the ACD overboard? . . .

Aha, so that's what happened to him!

Wait . . . which one are you talking about??

Did you notice that the day we boarded, the person introduced as ACD was Senad, but at mid-week that switched to Rico?? I, personally, liked the first one better, but chose not to question it when the odd personnel change took place.

You have not been reading the Norwegian Message Board-Senad is in very serious legal trouble. May or may not go to Federal prison.

Senad is the subject of the discussion in the thread title:" Feds-Cruise Ship Employee Had Sex with Teenage Passenger". Some of the discussion very rough.

No, I'd not read a single word about that -- thanks for advising.

Since returning back from the week at sea on Star, I've been pretty consumed with "back home" duties.

Again, thanks!!

Hi coka! we will be in the same cabin next January. Did you like the room? Any photos?

Hi Annie, Yes, I loved the suite due to the bump out window. The two middle bump outs are different from the others in the same category. This cabin has more space inside and more natural light during the daytime. Curtains must be closed at night to not give a glare on the bridge guys' water views. The balcony is not as big as the others next to them or on deck 9 below. I have sailed in a 9500 on the Pearl and a 10500 on the Jewel so I knew the difference. One thing I noticed on the Star was a steel bar jutted out rim from the deck above...which interrupted my sunning moments. I would wake up and find a bar shadow across my face, my leg, or tummy. Know there is not a lot privacy if someone on the bridge is right up at the window looking down below. I was never naked so that did not happen. haha.

I took a four pictures throughout the entire week. Here they are:

I can't believe we missed sailing with you by a mere few weeks! Maybe sometime in the future. You seem to be someone like myself who either finds the humor within a situation or brings the humor with her.

Carry on and glad you enjoyed the Star!!

Hi Annie, I am glad that I took them!

JMHAM1, I do hope our paths cross on a future sailing!

******************************************************

If you have a sense of humor and a slight flair for the wild side on a half moon crescent evening just before midnight, then might I suggest you attend the Ship N Males show. If you are female, you will not be disappointed. If you are male, there is plenty to laugh out loud at. I was not disappointed in the show and at times I exclaimed to myself out loud, “OMG!” or “Hahahahaha!” or “WTH?” or “Are they really doing that?” And I was referring to the passengers the entire time. Quest has nothing over on this show. A few times I had to look away, blush, or put my hands over my eyes and face while peeking through them. Most of the female passengers would probably tell you the Ukranian was the highlight. I thought Leaky Lacy, the host, er, hostess, was Da Bomb! Listen closely to his/her introductions to each act. Whether you are solo, with your spouse, with a group of women or men, you will laugh your hineys off. I sure did.

Costa Maya!

The Star docks in Costa Maya, Mexico so it is very easy to get off and back on the ship. Plenty of ship tours are available yet if you walk into the shopping complex just off the pier, you can find independent tour operators down by the opening near the leather boot/shoe store. If you keep to the right inside, past the huge pool, you will find them standing in the alley that leads outside the complex. Mahahual beach is a short inexpensive cab ride away. Some operators will also have brochures of different options. If you are daring and willing to risk it then go for it. I saw lots of passengers doing this. Only two names were announced repeatedly before sailaway.

The Newbie had her Dive In Training Re Certification so she left early morning. The remaining four walked around the complex. For me, the complex is a great place to get off the ship and walk around for a while if not planned a tour. We went to Carlos and Charlies so BIL could practice his Spanish speak and his tequila shot tastings. After, we watched passengers swim with the dolphins which was easily visible from the side of the restaurant/bar. Others swam in the giant pool, got cheap massages on the water’s edge, or shopped for trinkets. BIL bought GalPal a watch she liked. Mr. coka bought a Harley T-shirt for his retired police buddy who was taking care of Kitty back home. I stood in the hot sun shedding a little tear that the Rado watch I liked was now 7,500 dollars. I shall wear one only in my dreams. Wishing for my 10000 balcony to watch all the Costa Mayan action from, somebody mentioned making it back to the Star in time for a late lunch.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh, taking a break from being the Norwegian hostess, dream land was almost reached beneath the cool shade of the bump out rooftop balcony. Just before sleep, out of nowhere, Sting! Huh, what was that? I moved my lower leg while dozing. Sting sting again! Waking up more I then felt a giant munching on my left thigh. Screaming, I fly off the lounger almost going over the railing to 9500 below. “Mr. coka! Mr. coka!” I shouted. “Something is biting me!” I run inside to find him. Stripping down, I search for any sign of a creepy crawly. Nothing. “You must have been just dreaming.” Yeah, right, thirty seconds later four welts appeared.

“Look! Look!” I pointed them out to him. “Something BIT me!” The more I itched the bigger they got. “Do NOT scratch it!” he stated. I listened as he calmly went to his assigned drawer and pulled out a first aid kit. What the heck was he doing with a giant first aid kit? “Here, use this to wipe down the bites gently.” Before putting it on I wanted to find out what bit me in case it required a special salve he had in the kit. I found it on the outside window pane. She panted while patiently resting. Staring with big bulging eyes, giant wings twitching, and a HUGE nose pointing at me, I could see MY blood dripping from her long fanged teeth. Pissed that my leg of perfection now had defective welts, I grabbed a cloth Gary delivered with silverware inside.

Mr. coka laughed out loud from inside as his screaming Ninja wife and the Tabanid duked it out. She was so big I should have used the fork. Instead, someone out there got a white napkin arse whipping that day. Guess who won and lived to tell about it? I may have won the battle but lost the war. Ten minutes later a couple of angry girlfriends arrived and I permanently vacated the balcony until sail away. Mad as I was then about the biting blood suckers on my balcony that day, I still feel remorse enough to give the original Costan Mayan Horse Fly her three paragraph due as she remains somewhere in the forward Star’s balcony drain pipe. I really liked all my suite neighbors so there was no other place for her to go.

Vacating the balcony was a good thing. Inside I read through the Freestyle Daily and my other notices to find out there was more fabulous entertainment that evening and the silver/gold/platinum gathering mentioned earlier in the review. Thursday’s Stardust Showtime “Angels” is a must see if you enjoy aerial performances. From France, Jeremie Lamourez and Eleonore Pagnard definitely dazzled the audience as they demonstrated by a standing ovation.

The White Hot Party later on was well attended with plenty of room in Spinnakers for all. White draping sheets, white ice, white outfits, white covered chairs, flashing drink specials, glo sticks, and lots of dancing for everyone interested! We managed to bring BIL and Gal Pal along. BIL, with bone on bone knees, felt the vibe of the pumping music, the wild turkey, his aching joints, and joined us on the dance floor. Heck, who wouldn’t join 3 beautiful women on the dance floor? Mr. coka, that is who. No matter. General rule when traveling in a group: Nobody has to do anything on their vacation they do not want to do…and nobody else gets mad about it. We all lasted about 45 minutes anyways!
