Cruises Up the Queensland coast, East coast of Australia

Can anyone tell me whether a cruise up the Queensland coast, (Sydney to Port Douglas), Australia would be less likely to encounter rough weather than the cruises that go further out to sea. I'm prone to vertigo and thought this may be a safer option for my first 'experimental' cruise.

We were in Port Douglas in September and the seas were extremely rough. We had difficulty getting everyone tendered back on board.
