The trip insurance that can be bought from DCL - is it 'cancel for any reason' insurance?

i'm trying to understand what's covered, but i'm not making much headway.

Anyway know how it covers you if you have to cancel after final payment?

anyone have any experience with it?

I believe DCL insurance doesn't have "cancel for any reason" coverage.

You'll find (usually) better coverage at a better price from private insurance.

As PP has done, we also have used insuremytrip to find insurance.

Unless things have just recently changed, if you have purchased insurance through DCL and need to cancel for a reason not covered by the insurance, DCL will allow you to move the money paid for your cruise to another cruise date. You wont get a refund, but if you are able to cruise at another time, you wont lose any money.

That can be done even if you do not buy insurance from DCL .

i did look at insuremytrip, however our ages make anything other than DCL extremely expensive.

DCL is less than half of anything available on insuremytrip.

i'm trying to understand the DCL view of pre-existing conditions.

also, if it ends up that you're not covered and you move the money to another cruise, can you also change the names of the cruisers?

what's very interesting about the disney insurance - it doesn't seem to matter how old you are.

The price seems to bethe same regardless.

so i guess the insurance company averages out the risk across the passengers.

it could well be, for older passengers, the DCL insurance is the better buy.

if i could only figure out what's covered.

That would amount to a refund , which is not allowed. Just like airlines.

There are two types of medical coverages. Primary and Secondary. DCL insurance must be Secondary coverage , meaning it only pays out the balance after your primary home insurance or other private insurance has paid out. Lot of paper work is involved and it will take time to get your money back. Primary insurance pays upfront with no questions asked.Medical coverage should be atleast $100,000 per person.

One needs also medical evacuation coverage usually by helicopters, as highest as possible level, almost $250,00 minimum. So do your research before you buy, DCL gives no info of what it covers but it must very basic and Secondary insurance, so just a fig leaf

no need for medical coverage - everyone's covered up to their eyeballs.

the issue is cancellation insurance...that's what i'm trying to figure out...

does DCL have a pre-existing condition clause on the cancellation insurance?

and if so, who defines what was pre-existing. Just about everything is preexisting if the insurance company has a good lawyer.

the only thing i'm interested in is cancellation insurance.

(everything else is already covered or not of real importance).

According to the DCL website:

"Pre-existing Conditions means:

1. Any injury occurring to You, a Traveling Companion or a

Family Member prior to and including the effective date of

Your insurance; and

2. Any illness occurring to You, a Traveling Companion, or a

Family Member during the 60 days prior to and including

the effective date of Your insurance for which: a) medical

diagnosis or treatment by a Physician has been sought or

advised or for which symptoms exist which would cause a

prudent person to seek diagnosis, care or treatment; or b)

require taking prescribed drugs or medicine unless the

illness remains controlled without any change in the

required prescription."

So basically till your final full payment, you cannot get cancellation insurance, so cannot cancel the trip without 50% penalty on the full fare .

Third party cancellation insurance needs payment within 15 days of making the first booking deposit.

Choose your poison :)

here's the full DCL policy:

http://disneycruise.disney.go.com/media/dcl_v0400/Site/Reservations/Media/InternetMediaType/CustomizeCruise/Insurance/VacationInsurance2.pdf

i think i saw that the DCL policy is 8%.

i checked with AAA - the DCL policy is slightly less for our ages (would probably be cheaper for younger people). The DCL policy is the same regardless of age, so it works out cheaper if you're older, more expensive if you're younger.

AAA has a very good policy, but as already posted, you have to buy it within 14 days of the first deposit. Whereas DCL just has to be purchased by final payment - which it is if you accepted it when you first booked.

There are companies that allow you to purchase cancellation insurance up to final payment and still waive pre-existing conditions. CSA is one of them, but I recall there are others. -- Suzanne
