"Chair hogs" - why is this a problem?

That's right. John had promised to give a report on his meeting on this topic. Wonder what happened. Guess it's not enough of a problem for Carnival to worry about. More important matters must be taking up all their attention.

There would be people here and there sitting around talking, yet all done with their meals. Some might be reading, while others are playing cards. They do this with total disregard for others. They simply don't care.

I noticed this quite a bit on the Spirit last month. People would be circling Lido with a tray full of food trying to find a table and in the meantime others would be sitting at tables reading or just staring out at the ocean. Totally clueless which is probably how they run their lives.

I have to politely disagree with your comments in that the person was USING the table/chair/etc. If a towel was sat on the table or some such I agree but if you are actually using the chair, it's yours. And if I could not find a place to sit and you are sitting in one chair reading with 3 others chairs and table not being used by you I will sit down (after politely asking do you mind) in the unused chairs and use the unused table... and most likely meet a very nice person. Now if you are playing cards I will look further for a place. If you are actively using said table it's yours, nuff said.

op...you hit on your own answer when you typed "their" chair.

it's not their chair. not sure when some started thinking putting something in it, other than their butt, makes it theirs.

regardless, there is never a chair shortage. there are more chair than passengers. it just may not be where you want to sit.

as an early riser, i never have a problem, but if i ever need a chair anywhere that is community property, my butt always takes priority over a sitting towel, banana, or book.

I agree with you! some posters say "they will just get kicked off next port if they do" but that is no protection to your immediate safety? you just have to go to youtube and watch onboard fights! those people may have been kicked off the ship but they didnt really think about that while they were swinging punches!

Den

Ok. I went to youtube, and typed in "cruise ship fights". I found a couple of videos of drunk people being escorted out of clubs by security, and ONE video of an actual fight, aboard an actual cruise ship (the Carnival Splendor) with punches being thrown. And this was in a night club, and probably at night. And the description was that the one guy, had called the other guy's girlfriend a b****. And the guy whose girlfriend that was, was a meathead with a backwards baseball cap, and a t-shirt that said "I grapple" on it. So in other words, a situation that was overall a long, long way removed from a disagreement over a lounge chair on the "Serenity" deck.

I think most of these concerns about getting in physical fights on ships are way overblown. I highly suspect that on a ship, just like in the rest of society, most people puffing their chest out will back down when faced with someone actually willing to confront them. At least, that has been my personal experience on land. Maybe ships are different. But evidence to the contrary seems to be lacking.

Go ahead and remove some persons stuff.

You better be well prepared to be tossed on your butt by some pissed off stranger.

Don't think the pool staff(if you can find them) will do anything.

Also, the balconys do not have lounge chairs to lay out on.

Look, they could TRY to do something if they wanted to me, but all that would happen is I would press charges and make sure they were kicked off the ship. If your stuff is laying there for an hour, as far as I'm concerned they're items for lost & found.

Very good!

And I would bet a very high % of those threatening to personally enforce a very loosely policed Carnival rule are talking rot!

Front row pool chair hogs tend to be very fit healthy early rising people who like to sun themselves all day with the odd dive in the pool to refresh themselves, their body is their temple!

Those that want to enforce the 30 minute rule are usually the opposite because their priorities lay more with sleeping in or the huge interested in a BIG Breakfast first.

You dont get pool chair hogs complaining there are no seats in the Buffet because they had their plain yoghurt with muesli on the run.

The stronger win the weaker complain.

There are plenty of chairs on a cruise ship only very few of them around the pool:rolleyes:

lol... if their body is their temple, they are looking to make their temple full of cancer?:D

Have you read the other threads regarding chair hogging and the confrontations some passengers had? There are some seriously rude people out there. Or maybe they lose their common human courtesy when on a Cruise ship.

Not sure why you assume someone would act like that. I have moved people's stuff before. I wait about 40 minutes and the chair is now available.

If you are afraid of confrontation, which I am not, I LOVE to tell them that about the 30 minute rule and that I waited 40 and point them in the direction of their stuff...but, if you are, you can simply play stupid and tell them there was nothing in the chair when you go there and you have no idea what they are talking about.

And MANY balconies have loungers on them, just not the lowest categories, try extended or premium categories...

Not just that, but also mentioned was "

Then why are the chairs empty and they are no where to be found? Jusst because you got up early or ate yogurt doesn't give you the right to have the chair for the day when you aren't using it...

We've gotten some attitude but that is about it. They can't argue with you, you are right, they can not like it all they like but that won't change it...a SENSE of entitlement entitles nothing and they have to learn that...

Is this just a differing attitude thing? By that I mean, is it an American problem? In Europe, if someone is hogging a chair, it wouldn't be abnormal to remove their belongings and take the chair. I've even seen people put the offending clothes and towels IN the pool.

Amazing how you managed to be borderline offensive and hilariously wrong all in one post!

Why didn't you just post what you really meant: "it's all us fit beautiful chair hogs who wake up early to have their power breakfast before they spend all day getting cancer, and anyone who shows up later must be an ugly, fat, lazy person who is only concerned with sleeping and eating, and whom I could quite obviously take in a fight if I had to, because I am so clearly superior".

I have seen many people in chairs around the pool, and the vast majority aren't looking like fitness models (not that there is anything wrong with that of course) - have no idea what cruises you've been going on.

Passengers have every right to ask Carnival to enforce their POSTED policies - I could care less how fit you are, your tight butt isn't in that chair for 30 minutes, you are subject to your items being moved.

The problem with moving someones stuff after the 30 minutes, is that it is pretty tough to just sit and watch a particular chair for 30 minutes straight without taking your eyes off of it. First off, if you have 30 minutes to stand and stare at a chair, I can almost assure you that you could have used that 30 minutes to find another chair. Secondly, what prevents someone from coming by and plopping their butt down in that chair for 3 seconds and then leave again. technically, that would reset there 30 minute clock. Im nt advocating being a chair og, but Im just saying that if someone wants to be technical about the 30 minutes rule, then what's to prevent the 'chair hog" from being technical and just stopping by their chair every 29 minutes and having a 3 second sit on the chair and then moving along for another 29 minutes?

you're looking at it the wrong. way.

move the stuff, take the chair. if they don't appear within 30 minutes, it is yours. if they do come back, just move.

the odds are in your favor.

From my experience and then reading CC for the last few weeks it seems this is a huge problem. My thoughts are that a flip flop doesn't need a chair so I'll remove it with little hesitation. It's obvious who just walked away for a few minutes and who's still in bed. I seriously doubt any "pissed of stranger" is gonna do anything but run their mouth for a minute. They're wrong, you're right. Nobody is gonna run the risk of being kicked off over a chair. If they are that stupid they should probably find another way to vacation. 2000+ people have to get along whether they like it or not.

Chair hogs don't bother me in the least as the last place I want to be is at the main pool with all the noise and chaos but I certainly understand why it would be for those who do enjoy that area.

I guess I would fit into this category....except I have never heard an announcemnt or seen people circling for a table. :o

I cannot sit in the sun.....I am fair complected and I have to sit in the shade per my dermatologist. I enjoy being around the lido area and like all the activities, but have to sit in the shade. I guess I thought that as long as I had just my chair and I was sitting in it, drinking a drink....I wasn't taking up that precious area near the pool.

Now I am told I can't sit in the shade....Good Grief!! I might as well stay at home!

I was thinking the same thing - I sit at a table - in the shade - watching the ocean go by - reading a book and having a drink with my feet up and now I am a table hog. Can't win for losing eh? I cannot afford a balcony cabin and I did not go on a cruise to sit secluded on a balcony anyway. If I see someone looking for a table and my family is not with me or joining me I will tell them I will share the table - it is their call. I will even push my chair aside so they can have some privacy but will reclaim once they leave.

  • 2 weeks later...

Frankly I don't see the BIG deal in sitting right next to the main pool. There are always lounge chairs to be had. Just not next to the pool. I'm not a big lounger or sunbather.

Normally we want to "lounge" for a few minutes, all we have to do is fine a nice quite area away from the pool. I few times I have left the pool area because it is to loud.

But I can this would be a problem for people that want to be in the middle of everything or near the pool. But for me I think I will pass on this.

I am not sure this post meant you...when they said Lido I think they meant the buffet inside. I see people sit at the outside tables all of the time and have never thought anything of it, but when you do it in the ACTUAL buffet area when people need a place to sit and eat that is a bit questionable. At a non-peak time, no big deal, but to take up a table for 4 at noon to play chess or play cards should not be allowed...there are plenty of other areas on the ship to do that.

The issue with the post is Lido is the Lido deck so that is for the pool and the buffet so not sure that they meant your situation.

Now, as far as this problem...I messaged John Heald last week and he actually messaged me back to let me know that he talked to the Beards about it at that meeting but they had to do some research and do some checking with the ships and they were going to have a follow up call...so maybe they are really going to try to find a solution.

I think they should make you sign a seperate waiver when you board the ship, kind of like the health waiver, saying you cannot save chairs in the theatre for more than 10 minutes and you cannot save chairs on the decks for more than 30 minutes...if you do they will remove you from the theatre for saving the seats or if you do so on the lido, they can remove any and all belongings and they are not responsible...they should also make this announcement at the beginning of the muster drill since that is the ONLY mandatory gathering on the ship where everyone can hear it...

It isn't just the pool area, it is the serenity area on the ships with those...I don't think it is a big deal where people sit unless I have my kids with me and I need to be near the pool, not all of the pool have a place to sit to watch the kids other than a chair...

I used to think that the chairs around the pool were the ones the chair hogs used, but this spring on Conquest they had the third deck closed and all the chairs were taken or hogged.

It did make me mad, but I really do not want to get beaten up so

I wandered around and finally found a chair up some stairs.

Then a strong gust of wind wacked into me.

It blew away my heavy plastic insulated cup, my book and my eyeglasses.

Some kindly folks helped me catch my stuff.

A man found my eyeglasses about 12 feet away and I decided that I was just going to go inside and take a nap.

Stinkin chair hogs!
