Back from Western Med on Epic (4/29/2012 to 5/6/2012)

Recommended Posts

Well, we are American but I would have no issue with a guy putting on a bra, showing his underwear or putting a wig down his pants. Mild bad language is fine too. My concern would be excessive profanity, nudity or heavy sexual talk.

The question was if suitable for a 13yr old, by that age most European boys have probably been on holiday in Spain, seen women sunbathing topless etc. and just generally culture more exposed to such things than a 13yr old American.

It was MY question, so I was telling you what we'd be fine with in the hopes that anyone could shed a bit more light on the type of comedy.

Sorry missed that bit :) . So some sexual innuendo. Some slapstick humour. But no bad language or nudity etc.. As someone else posted earlier some people could find the type of humour vulgar..

Hope that helps..

No fees for any of the shows except Cirque Dreams, which is a performance with dinner and runs $25 for standard seats or $35 for premium seats. You can book Blue Man Group, Legends, Los Locos Oles, and Spanish Ballet ahead of time on MyNCL or at the entertainment desk, but we found that the shows were not completely full, so you could probably show up ~15 minutes ahead of time and get in, but you may not have as good of a seat. Any shows in Headliners (vs. Epic Theater) you may want to book ahead and/or show up earlier for because as others have posted, it's a smaller venue and there are columns that block sight lines.

I'll be posting a full review in a few days and cover what we did in each port. My biggest piece of advice is that it's very exhausting, so don't try to cram too much into each day - give yourself time for a gelato break and people-watching if you can!

Ok. This is good. Cirque Dreams is one of the specialy dining venues I wanted to book. I heard if you reserve it in advance you are paying in advance. If that's true, that's good, because I will be getting some pay items out of the way before the cruise.

Thank you and looking forward to your review.

Plus you shouldn't have to pay the 8% Spanish VAT tax you would if you book/pay onboard.

That's great to hear.:)

I'm going to pay for all my specialty dining in advance.

I want to prebook and pay for Cirque Dreams, Moderno and Teppanyaki. Our travel agent is giving us a free meal at an Italian restaurant. Have to look into which one that is. So that's 4 venues to look forward to and I, for one, don't mind paying for these places. They are worth it for their own unique experiences.

I'm getting so excited.:D

Thanks again

Italian restaurant is La Cucina and it's right at the front of the ship on deck 14, so very nice views. You can also take your buffet food there during breakfast and lunch if you'd like as it's overflow space for the Garden Cafe buffet. That's where we had breakfast each morning and usually we were the only ones there!

La Cucina, I'll check out their menu.

Also, thanks for the heads up. It's a pain holding your tray trying to find a table.

Hmmm. So, is is true? Whatever I book ahead of time - restaurants, spa, wine, soda package, tips- won't have the 8% Spanish VAT tax?

I didn't book ahead, but that's what I understood. You can only book excursions and specialty restaurants ahead of time - no way that I can tell of pre-paying the soda package, wine, etc.

The daily gratuity charge is not subject to the 8% Spanish VAT at any time.

Keep in mind that spa treatments are subject to a 15% Spanish VAT in addition to the 15% auto-gratuity that NCL adds. There's no way to avoid this charge for spa treatments.

Spa is +18% Spanish VAT not 15%

No, only at 8% Spanish VAT (no 18% auto gratuity added)

And with 30% tacked on, there is no way I will be using the spa. That is just insane on top of already bloated prices. I assume if you book the spa pass, it is taxed at 30% also or not?

Did you try to go to http://www2.ncl.com/login and follow the instructions to login? It should show everything about your upcoming cruise and let you make reservations (that you may have to pay for right away).

I am confused??? How do you pre-pay for your speciality dining??? No option to do this online when I made reservations?!

did you notice the kids club for the 10-12s? Is it in the same area as the younger kids? Do they have the circus training, etc. yet (or maybe that rolls our later this summer)?

Did you get extra chairs for your balcony--we also have a large balcony booked.

Did you find the ship "smoky?" I have heard that it is smoky b/c of the location of the open casino.

If you had better weather for outdoors (July) would you recommend Epic for a family with tween/teens vs. other cruises (we are also consdiring Carnival Sunshine or RCCL for July 2013). thanks, Elaine

My wife asked me to post the following question. How formal is the formal night? Do many people dress up for it?

I have no intention of bringing any formal clothes, but she might want to dress up one night.

Its been mentioned before but I will again there is NO FORMAL NIGHTS onboard. There is one DRESS UP or NOT night where a handful of people, maybe those celebrating anniversaries or special occassion dressed up..

There is no requirement and the dress code for the restaurants remains the same, i.e. no shorts in Bistro/Manhattan but fine everywhere else..
