Silent Party...This Has Got To Be One Of The Stupidest Ideas Yet

Recommended Posts

I am going to have to say that this will be a revenue buster...I just can't see it attracting a drinking crowd....and we all know that the clubs and lounges are there to produce revenue....thus sell drinks.

We did go to some fun outdoor parties late at night on the Oasis but I can't recall the themes. I just remember dancing and having a really good time out by the adult pool.

Oasis has the Malibu Beach Party and "Twenty" by Absolute Party in the Solarium.... absolutely great parties...and yes Malibu as in rum and Absolute as in Vodka....see what I mean about the revenue thing like I posted above.....sell drinks;)

They're also trying "Foodless Dinner" in the MDR!!! You sit there as the wait staff passes by your table. Then you quietly reach into your purse or pants pocket for saltines you stole from the WindJammer at lunch and/or airplane peanuts and PIG OUT!!!!

You can also opt for MTF. (My Time Fasting)

Yea....I really want to go to a music-less club:rolleyes:...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20cpBO2Fr68&feature=relmfu

Absolutely DUMB!!!

Dance to the music of your choice, be able to talk to others in a non-screaming voice, have some fun and a few laughs . . . wow, who would want to do that?

Yes...this is what brings a public forum down:rolleyes:

I would think that being a veteran with over 11,000 posts, you would have more to contribute than starting a thread claiming something something as "dumb" without experiencing it.

For those who really want to see what it's like, I'll be on Explorer in a few weeks and will try to do a video review of the event. As a DJ, I actually think the idea is pretty cool. The possibilities are endless considering how many genres of music can be played at once in one room. You can have an older couple dancing to the Temptations while a couple in their twenties dancing to the latest dance track, and another couple groovin' to the Bee-Gees. What's the difference if you're listening to the music over speakers or headphones.

I, for one, think the concept is cool.

Now if only they could pair that with "Smokeless Smoking" the discos might be a place that I would hang out!! LOL! Think of all the money they will save on speakers! Of course wearing those tight fitting headphones after somebody else has worn them is pretty icky.

LOL! LOL! My fifteen yo thinks its a grand idea...and it is for a generation of people who have learned to be alone in a room together with their devices! It reminds me of that Adam Ant song...."I'll be dancin by myself "

RCL is nothing if not innovative, always coming up with the newest thing. My usual response to these things is if you like it great...if not no biggie! But just for fun, since I don't like it, Ill spend the rest of my days posting on anti silent party threads, just like the people still whining about MTD being a crappy idea!:p I can't wait...just as I have reached diamond status I've found my very own "diamond dinosaur" cause célèbre ...those silent parties:D;)

Step back and watch me rant;)

The problem I can foresee is that there are groups of people who just want to sit back, listen to music, have some cocktails or smoke, and chill out. People watching and having a conversation.

That element will be missing.

Don't knock it until you try it. I just got off the Explorer and had a ball.

Silent disco has been the rage in Europe and as usual we Americans trying to keep up with the Europeans.

Exactly...that is half the fun of clubbing.

Do some research on SILENT PARTY...here is what is on Wikipedia:

Silent disco has become a common name[1] for a disco where people dance to music listened to on wireless headphones. Rather than using a speaker system, music is broadcast via an FM-transmitter with the signal being picked up by wireless headphone receivers worn by the participants. Those without the headphones hear no music, giving the effect of a room full of people dancing to nothing. Often two DJs compete for listeners. Silent discos are popular at music festivals as they allow dancing to continue past noise curfews. Similar events are "mobile clubbing" gatherings, where a group of people dance to the music on their personal music players.

Although the idea of dancing "en masse" with headphones has only come to fruition in recent years the idea of doing so has been around for a number of years. Probably one of the first visual occasions where people were wearing headsets during a party was in 1969 in a Finnish science fiction film called Ruusujen Aika, "A Time of Roses".[2] The concept was also used by eco-activists in the early 90’s who utilized headphones at outdoor parties to minimize noise pollution and disturbance to the local wildlife.

Quiet Parties (also known as Silent Parties and as Silent Dating parties) are nightclub events where participants socialize by writing notes to each other instead of speaking. The single rule at these events is "no talking."

The concept is believed to have been created in 2002 by artist Paul Rebhan and musician Tony Noe, two friends who visited several bars in New York City in an attempt to have a conversation, only to find they could not hear each other speak at any bar because of loud music and loud talking. This experience prompted them to invent the concept of 'silent nightclubbing'.

The first Quiet Party probably occurred in October, 2002 in New York City, and spread to other cities including San Francisco, Washington, Houston, Paris, London, Berlin, Barcelona and Beijing.

Quiet Parties arrived as one of the first of a new wave of unorthodox social activities of the early 2000s that merged elements of traditional party promotion with aspects of performance art. Others in this genre include Smart Mobs, Flash Mobs, and Cuddle Parties.

There is always an angle to things;)

I could understand that. Royal Caribbean has been known for offering a variety of activities to try to appeal to everyone on board. There's Bolero's (sp?), Schooner bar, Viking Crown lounge, Olive-Or-Twist, etc for an alternative if the Silent Party is going on.

Like I said, I'm going to check it out on board. The promo video sounds like there may be something playing quietly in the background, hard to tell.

Oasis is not a Freedom class ship. The poster said on the Freedom class ships he has been on the place was dead. It was his observation for his particular experience. It wasn't that he was on the "wrong ship" or "wrong times". Perhaps this is an attempt to fix the dead time in the lounge on these "wrong ships/wrong times" (using your words in regards to "wrong")

Well either you are on the wrong ships or just sailing at the wrong times.....On Oasis Blaze is busy nightly....at least during the times I have sailed...and I have sailed that ship each month this year except for May...I have walked out of that club at 4am some nights and the dance floor still was busy.

I would totally try this out...I would bring my iPod...turn on my favorite Zumba playlist...and finally be able to do Zumba on Royal. If only I could sync my iPod with my Mom...we would rock the dance floor in our own way and give the people watchers a show. ;)

Seems kind of fun to me. You don't have to yell to have a conversation yet can partake in the music at your noise level. I would go. Better than sitting there where you cant say anything without yelling. Might be fun to watch them dance to "nothing".

Another productive Cruise Critic thread started! This is what is bringing the forum down.

When did the forum start getting brought down?

Open dialogue and discussion are a bad thing for a web based forum?

At first I thought OH Boy!! Then sitting back I think it would be really a different experience. You know you might think its stupid to Zip Line or FlowRide..but you would try it, especially when your on vacation. Do you want to do it everyday, proberly not but it would be a different experience, the chance to try something and if you like it, all the better.

Im 53 my kids that cruise with me are in their low 20's Im sure you can appreicate that we have different taste in music, but we cruise to have "Family Time". On our last cruise I would have loved to gone out dancing with them but the new age music I like a song or two. (And I hate to admitt I dont know what the hell their saying in the new music) This way we could have a mix of age groups and enjoy the "Experience"

What ever happened to dont mock something until you tried it?

Geez. Some of you people calling it a stupid idea without even trying it sound like my father when I repeatedly try to convince him to get a DVR or TiVO. "Why would I need to pause live TV?....plus I already have a VCR to record my shows!!!"

Anyway I took part in the silent party thing on my Explorer cruise in March. It was actually pretty funny and kudos to RCI for trying something new or different.

My girlfriend and I saw it listed on the daily compass and we agreed to check it out if nothing else was going on. Well we totally forgot about it until we walked out of the casino and saw the table set up outside the Chamber with all the headsets on it. Every headset is sanitized before it is used or re-used.

At first glance it was pretty funny seeing everyone dancing without any music blaring from the speakers in the Chamber. There were 2 channels to choose from, one from each DJ. And you could control your own volume.

Every once in a while the DJ would come on your channel and say something like "ok, whoever is listening to this channel, on the count of three, fall down and lie down on the floor". It was funny seeing the other people's reaction to half the Chamber just dropping to the floor.

The cruise director Richard Spacey was looking down on the dance floor from the upper level. Someone from the cruise director's staff told everyone on one channel, on the count of three, look up, point at Richard Spacey and scream "RICHARD!!!!!!!!!!!!". It freaked him out but he got a big chuckle out of it.

We probably stayed in there for about an hour. It was really funny and worth it. Am I gonna go look for a nightclub now in NYC that has this? No. But on a 10-day cruise it was definitely worth checking out for only an hour.

What's bringing the forum? down, people who read topics just to criticize, you can look at their post history and see if all the time. People whose only contribution to the thread is, "This is the 4th time I've seen this topic today." People will jump into 10 threads about booze smuggling to say they don't do it, I could go on.
