Breaking large dollar bills?

Recommended Posts

Leaving this weekend on my first cruise. Have a quick question about money.

I plan on taking about $50 in 1 dollar bills so that I've got some tip money. But is there anyway to break $50's or $20's if I need to?

Never a problem...go to Guest Services

...although I have to comment on the title... "breaking large dollar bills". I think dollars are the smallest bills you can get :p

Maybe he won a lottery and they gave him one of those HUGE checks (about the size of a grown adult). Everyone knows that when you cash them at a bank, the bank gives you your change in HUGE dollar bills about the size of a person...:D

Guess I should have said "large denominations". Or "medium denominations" since I was talking twenties and fifties!:p

And I'm a "she" not a "he" and I definitely didn't win the lottery!

On the Spirit in April I needed to break some larger denominations and the Guest Services ran out of change and couldn't break them. I think the Casino was having a problem not having enough at the time also. Sooooooo, I would do it early in the cruise to make sure they don't run out.

SO...do you leave cash tips at the bar and give extra to the consierge/butler as you go along? I am wondering how to decide what kind of cash to bring. I thought I'd pre-pay tips, and keep a hundred for the consierge and such for the butler at the end. i tend to be a big tipper, but for a week of sailing I don't want to get caught up in constant digging for dollars. can you just "sign" off a tip as you would at a hotel, charge to the room?

I thought I read somewhere on here that you can go down to the guest services desk and charge the tips for the butler/concierge to your room and that you could get something to leave for them showing you tipped. Then it shows up on their pay checks when they get paid.

I could be wrong though....

This is the way I prefer doing it. No need for large amounts of cash.Just go to Guest Services and tell them the person you want to give to and you will get a slip of paper with your name, their name and the amount of tip. They will give you an envelope to put it in.Easy Peasy and they seem to really like getting tips this way.

Yes, the front desk can always cash bills for you, even $100 bills can be broken down into smaller bills by them. No problem. We've done it.

I've also had the casino cashier give me five 20s for a hundred.

just thought I'd say I really love your photo, and enjoy your posts, too.:)

Thanks! I've tried to replicate that picture lots of times on more recent cruises but they never come out right. Nobody would recognize me in person with shoes :)

Enjoy your cruise!

As you probably have assumed I'll have about 1,000 pictures and a full review when I get back. I'm really looking forward to it! I used to work in Alaska and it's beautiful. I can't wait to share it with my family.

OP you seem to have gotten great responses to your thread. I just wanted to wish you well on your first cruise. Here's to blue skies and calm seas! :D

Thank you, I'm definitely looking forward to it!!

Especially since the Upsell Fairy called me a couple of days ago and I've got one of the Owner's Suites now! Not a very good price but my husband told me to do it anyway since it's probably going to be a once in a lifetime thing!:D

We said that about our Vision of the Seas cruise...but we keep cruising. lol!

Make sure you read about the suite perks for NCL. You will have a concierge and butler, and access to things that others don't. Suite life on NCL is amazing.

Make sure to do a search on "suite perks", "butler", and "butler concierge tipping". Lots of good information on duties, perks and policies (e.g. butler and concierge are not included in the overall service charge pool and are tipped separately)

Enjoy!

I was originally booked in a forward Penthouse Suite so I had already researched all the perks. But I'm looking forward to the Haven now!
